3 Introduction Every school has its own story to tell. The context in which teaching and learning takes place influences the processes and procedures by which the school makes decisions around curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The context also impacts the way a school stays faithful to its vision. Many factors contribute to the overall narrative such as an identification of stakeholders, a description of stakeholder engagement, the trends and issues affecting the school, and the kinds of programs and services that a school implements to support student learning. <br><br> The purpose of the Executive Summary (ES) is to provide a school with an opportunity to describe in narrative form the strengths and challenges it encounters. By doing so, the public and members of the school community will have a more complete picture of how the school perceives itself and the process of self-reflection for continuous improvement. This summary is structured for the school to reflect on how it provides teaching and learning on a day to day basis. Page 1
4 Description of the School Describe the school's size, community/communities, location, and changes it has experienced in the last three years. Include demographic information about the students, staff, and community at large. What unique features and challenges are associated with the community/communities the school serves? DESCRIPTION OF SCHOOL is located in a suburban residential area in the city of Battle Creek, Michigan. It will serve over 1,350 students in the school year. consists of grades nine through twelve. AdvancEd, North Central Association of Schools and Colleges (NCA) and the University of Michigan provide accreditation. Lakeview High School is currently accredited with AdvancEd and NCA's highest school improvement honors. has been accredited by AdvancEd and NCA since ENROLLMENT Enrollment is approximately 1350 with around 300 graduating class of Appoximately 25% of the population is comprised of students of minority ethnicity and 40% of the population is comprised of students who have either free or reduced lunch. FACULTY The High School staff is composed of 98 staff members, 73 being teachers. 81% of the teaching staff are at the master's degree level, with 100% being highly qualified under State of Michigan requirments for student achievement. COUNSELING PHILOSOPHY The counseling department at believes in providing the resources necessary to help every student achieve his/her academic and career goals. This is done by providing students with the guidance essential for dealing with matters of all kinds including personal, academic, social and family. CLASS OF 2012 CONTINUING EDUCATION 95% of graduates will attend some form of postsecondary education. 36% will be attending four-year institutions, 52% will be attending two-year institutions, 4% will be attending technical/trade schools, and 3% will be entering the military graduates earned a combined total of $1.5 million in scholarships. It should be noted that the increase in percentage of students attending a two-year institution can be attributed to the implementation of the Legacy Scholarship Program which provides graduates with two free years of tuition at Kellogg Community College. SPECIAL PROGRAM Students of have the opportunity to pursue their educational interests through the following programs: Battle Creek Area Math and Science Center (BCAMSC) Eligible candidates for the BCAMSC are identified in eighth grade. The BCAMSC provides services directly to secondary students who are talented and motivated to study mathematics and science in great depth and acceleration. Students attend the BCAMSC half of each school day for mathematics, science, and computer education and spend the remainder of the day at their home school for other course work. Page 2
5 Calhoun Area Career Center (CACC) CACC integrates academic knowledge with technical skills, providing well-rounded educational opportunities for any student serviced by the Calhoun Intermediate School District. Currently, the CACC offers 18 programs following the Michigan Career Pathways model. While attending the CACC, students may earn college credits through dual enrollment or articulation. The programs are diverse ranging from Health Sciences and Human Services to Arts and Communications and Engineering/Manufacturing & Industrial Technology. DUAL ENROLLMENT Students eligible for dual enrollment are those who are in grade 10, 11 or 12, are enrolled in at least 1 high school course and have achieved a qualifying score on at least one of the following assessments: PLAN, ACT, PSAT or Michigan Merit Exam. The student may take any course if they received an endorsement in that area. Students are able to take courses in areas for which there is no endorsement (for example, psychology) by completing all sections of any of the above stated assessments. The vast majority of Lakeview students dual enroll with Kellogg Community College or Western Michigan University. SCHOOL OF DESIGNING ARTS (SDA) Seniors may attend the SDA for half of the school day. Students attend Tuesday through Saturday. Upon graduation from high school, students may continue at the SDA for one more year to complete the certification program as a licensed beautician. MICHIGAN VIRTUAL SCHOOL (MVS) As a supplement to other curricular options, students are able to take virtual courses through Michigan Virtual School, an online vendor who offers courses in both core and non-core areas. Courses taken through MVS are subject to the standard LHS grading scale and AP weighting system, if applicable. MVS courses may be taken either in place of or in addition to a student's typical course load. SCHOOL SCHEDULE The student school year includes two semesters of approximately eighteen weeks. Each day is divided into four ninety-minute periods. All classes meet five times per week. As a result, students receive a year's worth of instruction in one semester. Students are scheduled for eight classes per year. Students attend four classes first semester and the other four classes second semester. Students will receive a full credit for each class successfully completed. GRADING SYSTEM A = % A- = 90-92% B+ = 87-89% B = 83-86% B- = 80-82% C+ = 77-79% C = 73-76% C- = 70-72% D+ = 67-69% D = 63-66% D- = 60-62% *AP grading scale implemented for the first time at the start of the school year. COMMUNITY/BUSINESS CONNECTIONS There have been many community and business connections with our Nationally known DECA program as well as oversees online learning within our curriculum. NEW HONOR LEVEL SYSTEM AND ATTENDANCE POLICY Our new Honor Level System has created partnerships with the community and brought in thousands of dollars for incentive programs as well as increased student attendance from 87% in to 96% in , Because of the Honor Level System discipline has decreased 60%. COMMUNITY CHANGE The number of students and families living in the Battle Creek Community has decreased over the past few years, which in turn has decreased the population of students attending the Lakeveiw School District. The Lakeview School District is still the school district of choice in Calhoun County. Changes in the community to a lower social economic status has significantly affected the success of all of our students. Page 10
