Bible 101: The first and only truly divine mash-up! How to Study the Bible Session 3 Gayton Baptist Church

Tonight s objective A more informed understanding of the Bible and: Its history how it s organized how it came to be in the form we have it now the chronological order of both the Old and New Testaments the different kinds of writings in both Testaments who wrote what in the New Testament and why that matters how the Old and New Testaments connect to each other

A brief history of the Bible The word Bible something to do with paper! Fifth century use A plural word in Greek that has come to be a singular noun Testament: from a will to a covenant, with God s elect people Written over a period of 1400 years, from Moses to the first century church In original form, no verses or chapters. First appearance in English language Bible was in 1560

Before we go on the canon! We use the word canon to refer to the God-inspired scriptures Was originally used as a standard by masons and carpenters against which things were measured for straigtness of line Regarding the early church, canon was used to determine the appropriate doctrines of faith and practice. Eventually, it became the end product of determining which Scriptures were agreed upon as inspired by God and thus included in the Scriptures.

Considerations of the Canon The writings are self-authenticated already inspired by God, and eventually recognized as such The decisions of men Councils were created with the purpose of winnowing out the inspired by God writings from those that were not. Debates over canonicity There were discussions and disagreements, but supervised by God, and nothing is included that was not agreed upon by all Completion of canon: 397 A.D. Nothing new since then, and nothing will be added.

The Old Testament There are 39 books in the Old Testament Jews referred to them as the Law, the Prophets and the Writings There are other writings known as the Apocrypha Not quoted by Biblical authors

The composition of the Old Testament: the books of the Law The books of the law (Pentateuch): Genesis Exodus Leviticus Numbers Deuteronomy The Pentateuch is a mixture of history and law A narrative history that explains the laws, providing a historical context for understanding the laws. Tells of God s covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob; His deliverance of their descendants from Egypt, and their obligation to keep the laws God gave them at Sinai.

The composition of the Old Testament: the Historical Books Historical books Joshua Judges Ruth I & II Samuel I & II Kings I & II Chronicles Ezra Nehemiah Esther Tells the history of ancient Israel from the conquest of Canaan under Joshua, through the divided kingdoms of Israel and Judah, the fall of both to Assyria and Babylonia, and the restoration of Judah from exile in the sixth century B.C.

The composition of the Old Testament: the Wisdom books Wisdom books Job Provebs Ecclesiastes Focus on questions about the meaning of life (Job, Ecclesiastes), practical living, and common sense (Proverbs and some Psalms ). Contrasts our faulty human wisdom to God's perfect reasoning. Thus when we live to our own will and not His, we will experience grief and frustration, not because God is vengeful and angry but because we led ourselves that way out of our pride and arrogance. This literature warns us of our evil nature and desires.

The composition of the Old Testament: the Poetry books Poetry books: Psalms Song of Solomon Lamentations (for some) similar to modern poetry, but Hebrew makes it difficult for use to understand and appreciate. Hebrew poetry is based on a "rhythm" of stanzas and phrases re-told differently, conveying the same ideas and meaning parallelism, the saying of one thing in two ways. Use of metaphor and symbolism: does God really have wings?

The composition of the Old Testament: the Prophets Major/Minor Major Prophets Isaiah Jeremiah Lamentations Ezekial Daniel Minor Prophets Hosea Joel Amos Obadiah Jonah Micah Nahum Habakkuk Zephaniah Haggai Zechariah Malachi

Prophets con t the type of literature that is often associated with predicting the future it is also God's words of "get with it" or else. Thus sayeth the Lord Prophecy also exposes sin and calls for repentance and obedience. shows how God's law can be applied to specific problems and situations, such as the repeated warnings to the Jews before their captivity. There are over 2000 predictions that have already come to pass, hundreds of years after the authors deaths!

Chronological order of the OT Genesis Job (written during the time of Genesis) Exodus Leviticus Numbers Deuteronomy Joshua Judges Ruth (written during the time of Judges) 1 Samuel 2 Samuel 1 Chronicles & Psalms (written during the time of 2 Samuel) 1 Kings Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon, & 2 Chronicles (written during the time of 1 Kings) 2 Kings Hosea, Amos, Habakkuk, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Joel, Micah, Zephaniah, Lamentations, Jonah, Nahum, & Obadiah (written during the time of 2 Kings) Ezekiel Daniel Ezra Esther, Haggai, & Zechariah (written during the time of Ezra) Nehemiah Malachi (written during the time of Nehemiah)

Summary of the Old Testament 39 books 6 styles of writing Multiple writers, one author Over 1,400 years in the making 1 message, inspired by God

The New Testament 27 books The four gospels The Book of Acts The Epistles The Revelation of John

The composition of the New Testament: the Gospels The gospels tell us of the fulfillment of God s promise and work in resolving the problem of sin: the coming of the Messiah. Each gospel has a specific purpose as a witness of the life and ministry of Christ: Matthew for the Jews, that the long-promised Messiah has come Mark for Gentiles, with Jesus being the suffering servant who laid down his life for many Luke for Gentiles, providing a more historical view of Jesus, the Son of Man John the gospel of faith and miracles, that we could see Jesus as fully God and fully man.

The composition of the New Testament: the Book of Acts Written to provide a history of the early church. Emphasizes the importance of the day of Pentecost and being empowered to be effective witnesses for Jesus Christ. Records the spread of the gospel to Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the rest of the surrounding world. Sheds light on the gift of the Holy Spirit, who empowers, guides, teaches, and serves as our Counselor. Emphasizes the importance of obedience to God s Word and the transformation that occurs as a result of knowing Christ.

The composition of the New Testament: the Epistles These are the personal letters written by the apostles to their churches or to individuals. Most challenge the congregation to wake up out of their selfish ways and to concentrate on Christ with specific ways and clarifications. They usually begin with the name of the writer and the recipient, a greeting, a reason for the letter, the central message or body of the letter, and then usually a closing, just like most letters today. The epistles deal with concerns and false teaching that needed immediate correction. Authors: Paul, James, John, Peter, Jude, and the unknown author of Hebrews. Eyewitnesses to Jesus and his life.

The composition of the New Testament: the Revelation of John The stated purpose of Revelation is to reveal Jesus Christ: His person, His power and His plan for the future. Central to the book is the existence, power, sovereignty, justice, wisdom and goodness of God the Father and Jesus Christ. The Revelation of John is apocalyptic literature in the tradition of Old Testament prophets like Daniel. Shares the use of visions and symbolic language It is John s telling of what he is seeing, much of which may be beyond description with human words it is like
