4 FARO THE REGION In the eastern corner of Sicily sits the city of Messina. The area is just over 81.5 square miles. While the city center lies at an elevation of 10 feet above sea level much of the region is hilly, in contrast to the more famous Etna wine region that has a single mountain. The Pelotitani hills create multiple mesoclimates. In general, the area ranges from 57 F in January to 86 F in August and the areas proximity to the sea results in higher humidity than other parts of Sicily. THE HISTORY The region was founded by the Greeks in the 8th century BC but was invaded and conquered by numerous groups over the centuries. It was not until the 14th century that winemaking began to flourish in the area under the rule of the House of Aragon. It is thought that the wine mentioned in Much Ado About Nothing would have been produced in Faro di Messina, as it is the location of the play. After the 14th-century, wine production gradually increased in the area peaking in the 18th-century. After that, winemaking declined sharply until the 1980s. FARO WINES Today Faro wines are almost exclusively red, made from Nerello Cappuccio and Nerello Mascalese. Both varieties thrive in the volcanic soil of Sicily. In recent years, interest in Sicilian wines has led to an increase in popularity for both grapes. The Faro DOC was introduced on December 3, The local wine, however, is incredibly old. The DOC name Faro comes from an ancient Greek population, the Pharii, who settled in this spectacular nook of the Mediterranean and grew grapes as far back as the 14th century B.C. Not only is Faro one of the world s most ancient wine areas, but it is also one of the smallest appellations located in the Messina district. The entire appellation is only 50 acres in size, and located in the district of Messina and the breathtaking Messinesi hills wedged between two seas the Tyrrhenian and the Ionian, joined by the Messina Strait. Faro DOC is a 100% native appellation. The wine is made exclusively from indigenous varieties which are well suited to the Messina soil; which can range in composition from compact and slightly acidic at the highest altitudes to alluvial near the coast.
5 Faro DOC (Messina) DOC REGULATIONS Despite its long history and being from one of Italy s oldest wine regions, Faro was only granted DOC status in The wine is unique in that the wine had almost reached extinction in the early 1990 s only to be revived shortly thereafter. The regulations surrounding Faro DOC focus mostly on the grape varieties which make up the blend. The principal grape is Nerello Mascalese, which must make up 45-60% of the total blend. can make up to 15% of the blend, and Nero d Avola, Gaglioppo and/or Sangiovese. The last three grapes combined can only make up a maximum of 15% of the total blend. Other regulations include that Faro DOC must have a minimum of 12% alcohol and that the wine must be aged one year before its release. Additional grapes include Nerello Cappuccio, which can make up 15-30% of the blend, Nocera, which

7 NERELLO MASCALESE Nerello Mascalese has seen a rise in popularity as Sicilian wines have exploded onto the global market. Grown solely in Italy, this varietal is found mostly in Sicily and takes its name from the Mascali plain between Mt Etna and the coast. Today, most of the Nerello Mascalese have been replanted due to a catastrophic lava flow in 1928 that destroyed most of the vines. However, there are a few vines near the coast that survived the lava flow and still predate the phylloxera epidemic of the 1880s. Today it is believed that the Nerello Mascalese grape is a relative of the Sangiovese grape, which would explain its ability to pair well with food. Suggested pairings include a broad range of foods, including game dishes, mushrooms, eggplant, as well as tomatobased dishes. The grape is noted for its dark skin and ability to grow well on volcanic soil. Wines made from the grape tend to have notes of red fruit, herbs, and minerals. It is not uncommon for Nerello Mascalese wines to be compared to red Burgundy or Barolo, with the wines being light in color despite the robust aromas and often high alcohol.
8 NERELLO CAPPUCCIO Nerello Cappuccio often plays second string to Nerello Mascalese, its genetic cousin. Like Nerello Mascalese, Nerello Cappuccio has seen an increase in popularity in recent years and is most noted for its ability to thrive in the volcanic soil as well as its prominence in the Mt. Etna and Faro region. Nerello Cappuccio is unique in its capacity to produce richly colored wines high in acidity. pairings include steak, dishes that contain tomatoes and garlic, as well as hearty fish such as tuna or salmon. While occasionally vinified on its own, Nerello Cappuccio is most commonly blended with Nerello Mascalese as it offers a beautiful counterpoint to the Mascalese grapes. Nerello Cappuccio wines are bright ruby in color and easily approachable. They tend to be softer than their cousin with incredible aromas of cherry. Because of Nerello Cappuccio s softer profile, it can be paired with seafood or red meats. Suggested food
9 NERO D AVOLA Nero d Avola is one of the most famous and widely planted grapes in Sicily. The grape arrived in the region centuries ago. The wine s name, which means Black of Avola, is renowned for its dark skin and has long been a favorite among winemakers for adding color and flavor to blended wines. acidity. Suggested pairings for this wine include smoked or barbecued pork, steak, venison, and mushrooms. While historically Nero d Avola was used for blending, in the beginning of the 21st-century winemakers began producing 100% pure varietal Nero d Avola wines. When vinified on own its own the grape can produce a broad range of flavor profiles for a winemaker to work with. Aged in stainless steel the wine can be young, and fresh with notes of red berries and spices. However, if aged in oak barrels Nero d Avola takes on more complex flavors of chocolate and plum. In general, Nero d Avola has high tannins and medium

11 LE CASEMATTE Anyone who has met Gianfranco recognizes his enthusiasm and passion for fine wine and the fantastic island of Sicily. Today, Gianfranco owns the winery alongside Italian soccer champion, Andrea Barzagli. Set in the northeastern corner of Sicily, near Messina, Le Cassematte focuses on a single, tiny, quality-driven appellation: Faro. vineyards, endow Gianfranco s wines with amazing elegance and fragrance. These are big, luscious wines that simultaneously show distinctive balance and harmony. Gianfranco s winery is located at Faro Superiore, high up over the Messina Strait, where the hillsides can have a gradient up to 70%. The winery was named after two casematte or casemates (a.k.a. pillboxes) from World War II, which served as observatories and defensive structures at that time. Today, in more peaceful times, the casemates are content to watch over Gianfranco s largest vineyard, which is five acres in size. The Le Casematte total surface area is a little over 17 acres of terraced vineyards and is located at an altitude between 820 and 1,215 feet above sea level. Pristine and remote, these vineyards benefit from the constant sea breezes of the Messina Strait, notably the Sirocco wind during summer. Great temperature excursion gives the wines excellent aromatic qualities and a freshness running through the entire range. The terrain in the vineyards is a mix of sandy, calcareous, and clayey soils that, when combined with the particular microclimate and location of the

16 THE PEOPLE GIANFRANCO SABBATINO ANDREA BARZAGLI CARLO FERRINI FOUNDER AND CEO Sabbatino found his way into the wine world about twenty years ago by chance or perhaps by fate. He became so impassioned about it and mastered it to the point where he didn t hesitate at all when he was given the opportunity to create a new company in his city. FOUNDING PARTNER Many people know Andrea Barzagli an Italian professional footballer who plays as a centre back for Italian club, Juventus. He is a three-time member of the Series A Team of the Year, and is regarded as one of Italy s and Serie A s best and most consistent defenders. In addition to his sports career, Andrea is also a winemaker, known for his skill crafting quality wines. This passion for wine and for the land, is what inspired Andrea to embrace the idea of building Le Casematte in Faro. CONSULTING WINEMAKER Carlo Ferrini has been working in the wine industry since 1978 and has been a freelance consultant since In his opinion, In winemaking, you cannot hurry. A great wine is ready when it completes all its cycles. Those who try to hurry things along are looking for trouble.

18 POINTS OF DIFFERENTIATION UNIQUE WINES Faro is one of the smallest DOCs in Italy, only 20 hectares, and remains mostly undiscovered by the wine industry. As a result, these unique wines can be found at a great value PHENOMENAL TERROIR Like Etna wines, Faro wines come from vineyards planted predominantly on mountainous terrain: the key difference here is that there are multiple hills rather than a single mountain. This topography creates multiple mesoclimates on which Faro winemakers can capitalize. The presence of the strait below helps moderate the temperatures in Sicily s hot climate. CRAFTED BY CARLO FERRINI The much sought after Carlo Ferrini acts as winemaker. When asked why he chose to work at Le Casematte he explained behind every great wine is a great personality. And at Le Casematte, that great personality is Gianfranco Sabbatino. He is humble and takes every piece of advice given into consideration. ORGANIC FARMING Uncontaminated surroundings that create the right balance in the land and reinforce the natural resistance of plants and their cycles.
