1 Snack: Day Three Daily Theme: Parts for Walking Theme Verse: I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth. 3 John 1:4 Bible Story: Joshua and Jericho Simple Truth: We walk in God s path when we obey Him and love others. Making Walls Quick overview of the snack: Children will build the walls of Jericho and then crash them down just as God crashed down the entire city of Jericho. Supplies needed for 10 children: 5 small bowls 10 plastic knives 10 napkins Container of wet wipes or a nearby bathroom for washing hands (this will be very sticky and messy!) Ingredients needed for 10 children: 2 cans of chocolate or vanilla frosting 1 box of graham crackers Preparation: Divide frosting between the five bowls. Thoroughly clean the work table. Break graham crackers in half so that they are squares instead of rectangles. You may also decide to give older children more crackers to work with if you think they need more to eat. Lesson before the snack: We have lots of different toys that can be used for building things, like Legos or blocks. What are some things you have built? Have you ever seen people build something big, like

2 a house or a playground? It takes a long time to build something as big as a house or a tall office building. How long do you imagine it would take to build a whole city? Today we are talking about walking in God s path. Our Bible story is about some Israelites who literally walked right where God told them to and then something amazing happened. An entire city fell down! When we talked about how long it would take to build a whole city, we guessed that it would take years. But in one day, the entire city of Jericho collapsed. That was a miracle. You are going to get to build some city walls of Jericho today using graham crackers and frosting. Directions for the snack: 1. Have children wash their hands. Hand out plastic knives and place bowls of frosting so two children can easily share them. 2. Give each child four square graham cracker pieces. You may decide to give older children more crackers to work with. 3. Show children how to use the knives to frost the edges of the crackers and then stick them together to make city walls. Older children will be able to build more complex buildings and may want to add details such as windows and doors to their city. Younger children may have trouble getting their buildings to stand up, so you may want to have them work in pairs instead of individually. Refer to the picture for the easiest way to make the walls stand up. 4. Allow children to admire each other s work. Lesson after the snack: It didn t take us years and years to build our city, but we did have to work carefully to get the buildings to stand up instead of fall down. On the count of three, we will all pretend to blow our trumpets and then you may each knock down your houses (trumpet sounds) Unlike the city of Jericho, which lay in ruins for many years, you can now eat up your cracker city. Let s close with a prayer. Dear Lord, Thank you for showing us the path to walk in so we know how to live. Thank you also for giving us yummy city walls for a snack. Amen.

Walking Robot Quick overview of the craft: Children will make a robot that can walk in Jesus footsteps, just as they can. Supplies needed for 10 children: 10 toilet paper rolls, all toilet paper removed Strip of cardboard 15 x 1½ 40 small washers (about 1 centimeter in diameter) 10 craft sticks Silver spray paint Heavy-duty string Scissors Permanent markers Tape Hole punchers Preparation: Cut cardboard into 1 ½ by 1 ½ inch squares. Spray paint cardboard and toilet paper rolls with silver paint at least a day in advance. Cut string into 6 lengths (20 total). Cut more string into 8 lengths (20 total). Print all four sheets of footsteps and tape them to the ground in order of the Bible verse near the tables. You may want to do this twice so that children may have more time to practice with their robots instead of waiting for their turn.

4 ***For younger children, have holes already punched in toilet paper tube and cardboard pieces (see steps 3 and 4). ***There is a lot of knot tying in today s craft. Extra helpers would be very useful especially for the younger children. Lesson before the craft: What are some things that make your parents happy? Those are all good ideas. I would guess that one of the best things you can do to make them happy is to do what they tell you to do. God tell us the same thing in the Bible. Our gospel verse for today is from 3 John 1:4 and it says, I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth. What do you think the truth is that God talks about? Yes, it is the Bible. Doing what he wants us to do by hearing his words and following Jesus example. Today we are talking a lot about walking in Jesus footsteps. We are going to make a robot that can walk. Craft: 1. Give each child 1 silver toilet paper tube and a permanent marker. 2. Tell the children to hold the tube horizontally and draw a robot face on it. 3. Hand out two cardboard squares to each child. 4. Allow older children to use the hole punchers to make four holes in the tube-two at the top outside edges of the face, and two directly underneath at the bottom outside edges of the face they drew. (You may want to demonstrate this step.) 5. Have children use a sharp pencil or pen to poke a small hole through the middle of each cardboard square. 6. Hand out four washers and two pieces of 6 string to each child. 7. Show children how to tie a knot through each of the two holes at the bottom of the robot face. ***Younger children may use a piece of tape instead of tying, or to reinforce their tying. 8. Next, thread two washers onto one of the pieces of string, and then the cardboard square. 9. Tie a knot underneath the cardboard square (on the bottom of the robot foot) and use a piece of tape to reinforce the knot. 10. Continue with the other leg of the robot. 11. At this point, have children hold their robot by his head to check the length of the robots legs. They should be similar so that the head can be straight with both legs standing on the table. Helpers may need to help some children retie some of the knots so that the legs are the same length. 12. Hand out two 8 pieces of string to each child. 13. Have them tie one end of the string to the hole at the top of the robot s head and the other to the craft stick. 14. Repeat with the other side. These knots may also be reinforced with tape, if desired. Lesson after the craft: These robots are a type of puppet called a marionette. Marionettes are special because they can walk. Can you try to make your robot walk? Demonstrate how to hold the robot by the craft stick and tip the stick side to side to make the robot walk. Allow children to practice.

5 If you are running out of time, you may skip the next section and just remind children of the day s verse and then send them off to their next activity. Now that you ve made your walking robot, we are going to practice using them. Do you remember today s gospel verse? I ll say it once and then you can repeat it with me. I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth. 3 John 1:4 Now let s say it together, I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth. 3 John 1:4 If you look over here, you will see that there are some footsteps on the floor. These footsteps have the words to our Bible verse on them. You will each get a turn to say the Bible verse while you have your robot walk in Jesus footsteps. Give children a few minutes to practice handling their robot. For younger children they can just have the robots hop from one step to the next, but encourage older children to make the robots step to each print. Great job everyone! Don t forget to walk in the truth of God s word and love each day!

Sumo Quick overview: This game is fun tag game where campers take steps around the playing area only when commanded by the sumo master. Supplies needed: Cones or something to mark the play area Preparation: Designate a playing area in which the campers must remain. Choose an area that all the campers can stand in without touching each other. If you are unsure about how much space that is, you could ask them to spread out with their arms out, and make sure that they can t reach anyone else s fingers. Recreation activity directions: Today I am going to be your sumo master. Sumo wrestlers are honored athletes in Japan. In this game we will be standing in a wide stance like a sumo wrestler as we try to tag each other. As we play this game, you must stay inside the boundaries. If you go out of bounds, you will be out for that round. During the game you will listen to my commands and then obey my orders. I will say a simple command like, Step. Then everyone will get to take one step. You may tag each other at any time, but you may only step when I give the command. When you tag, please tag on the arms, legs or back. I don t want anyone to get hit in the face or chest. If there comes a time when you and someone else tag each other at the same time, then you will just shake hands and neither of you is eliminated. You can t tag

7 that person again until after I give another command. When you are tagged, please be honest and remove yourself from the game. I will be more than happy to help you remember that you got tagged, but remember, sumo wrestlers fight with honor. We will get to play more rounds more quickly if we don t have to wait for disagreements. I will add more commands during future rounds. For now, we will try a round with just the simple step command. May the most skilled sumo warrior be the last one standing. Important leader notes: You will want to pay attention to the speed of the game. You can control how intense the game is by waiting after each command, or giving two or three commands at once. Imagine how much chaos will ensue before you give a command like, Step, step, step. Other commands to add in are, hop, jump, and triple jump. Hopping is a standing long jump. A jump is a step and a jump. And a triple jump, is two steps and a jump. Don t introduce too many commands at once. It will be enough challenge for many campers to simply step and not get tagged. Discussion after Activity: What was your favorite part of playing this game? What was your least favorite part? When you were really close to someone else you wanted to tag, were you ever tempted to cheat? Did you ever want to just take one little step, or slide your feet a little closer to the person? Today s Bible story talks about people who get directions from God about what to do. They are told to march around city every day, and that the walls will fall down. I bet those directions sounded silly to some of them. But they obeyed. And things went well for them because God blessed them. In this game, if you didn t obey the commands, things didn t go well for you. You were eliminated. And if you broke a rule and no one noticed, you still didn t accomplish anything. How does it feel to win, but to know you only won because you cheated? In our lives God gives us directions about what to do and not to do. Sometimes we like to pretend that we didn t hear his directions, but then later we often regret those bad choices and wish we could go back and do things the right way. Let s hope that some practice following some simple directions will help us remember to follow God s directions just as well. Variations: If your campers are getting too competitive, you can add in a rule. When campers are tagged, have them kneel, right where they were tagged. They may not move, but they can still tag. This gives them something to work on together. This is not a necessary part of the game. If you play the basic game quickly, you will have time to play a number of rounds, and campers will have many chances to be successful.
