1 How to Establish Modem Communications from Director to a xl Main Panel These instructions are intended for installers connecting from a PC running Director Version 4.7x to a pre-commissioned (already programmed) xl Panel with a Bell 103 modem (supporting connections up to Feature Set 3) or a Worldwide modem (supporting connections up Feature Set 7). Connecting to xl Panels with Feature sets 8 or higher requires a Direct Wire (RS485) or an IP connection. These Steps assume you have already communicated with this Main Panel and programmed it by IP or Direct Wire communications. Please see How to Establish Communications for Director - Detailed Steps.pdf if you are connecting to the Main Panel for the first time. At the time this document was created, the supported Operation Systems for Version 4.7x are XP Professional, Vista Business or Ultimate Edition or Server The steps following were performed on a PC running Windows XP Professional. The PC hosting the Director Communications Client (typically on the Director Server PC) requires an external US Robotics Sportster 56K modem (requires Serial port on PC). Although other V.90 modems supporting a connection speed of 38,400 baud may work, they have not been tested and are not supported by Guardall. These steps have been tested using a Belkin USB Serial Adapter F5U103 for use with computers running Windows XP Professional that have no serial port. (Note: only the XP Driver is available. There are no Windows VISTA or Server 2003 drivers available for the F5U103). Although other USB to Serial Converters may work, they have not been tested and are not supported by Guardall. ***Modems require a direct/analogue telephone line. 1. US Robotics Sportster 56K modem (requires Serial port on PC or preinstalled USB to Serial Adapter): a) Turn on your PC and login with administrator access. If you have been using the Serial Port Connection on your PC for a Direct Wire connection, first remove that connection type from the Phone and Modem Settings as follows in step b). If the serial port has never been used, skip to step c): b) From your Windows Desktop, click start > Control Panel > Phone and Modem Options > Modems (tab) > Communications cable between two comp > Remove. A window will pop-up Are you sure you want to remove the selected modem(s) from your system? Click Yes. Click Ok to close the window. Close the Control Panel window. c) Plug in the phone line to the Phone Line port on the modem (see diagram below). d) Plug the DB25 Male cable to the modem DB25 Female Connector (see diagram below). e) Check to ensure the small switches on the rear of the modem are set as seen below: Reference Information: Modem Switches (USR Sportster 56K) Voice Modem Switch 1 (up): DTR override (this allows Windows to Auto Detect) Switch 2 (up): Verbal result codes Switch 3 (down): Display result codes Switch 4 (up): Display offline commands Switch 5 (up): Answer on 1st ring Switch 6 (up): Carrier Detect - Normal Switch 7 (up): Load NVRAM defaults Switch 8 (down): Smart Mode Page 1 of 11

2 f) Connect Transformer supplied with the US Robotics Sportster 56K modem to the power outlet and connect the Power In cable to the modem. Turn on the modem. g) Plug the DB9 Female Serial cable into an available Serial port on your PC. h) From you Windows Desktop, click start > Control Panel > Phone and Modem Options > Modems (tab) > Add. See next page. h) The following screen will appear, click Next > as seen below: Page 2 of 11

3 f) The following screen will appear, click Finish. g) Select your modem in the list, and click Properties. Page 3 of 11

Once the modem is installed and recognized under Windows, setup these items through the Control Panel as follows: In the Modem tab, ensure the "Maximum Speed" is set to In the Advanced tab, enter the following text as a modem initialization string: ATS7=140 Tip: Uppercase as shown; 0 = zero. Purpose: This allows for a longer 'phone number' (e.g., with pauses, long distance access codes, etc.) When finished, click OK as needed to close the screens and exit from the Control Panel. 5 3) Shut down the PC. Make sure the USB HASP is plugged into a USB port. Start the PC and Login to the Director Software. These Steps assume you have already communicated with this Main Panel and programmed it by IP or Direct Wire communications. Please make sure you are using Form view at all times while using these steps when you are in Form view you will see the Grid button near the top left hand side of the window. Your screen should display the following: Please make sure you are using Tree view at all times while using these steps when you are in Tree view you will see the Tree button near the top left middle of the window depressed. 6 4) Assign the Modem comm port to the comm client. This is only performed once during installation of the comm client or when changing comm ports. Note that you must have installed the modem on your computer (Steps 1 and 2 above) for the modem comm port to show up. Procedure: Start the Comms Client Start > All Programs > Verex Director V4 > Verex Director Communication. In the bottom right corner of your windows screen in the task bar you will see the MONITOR ISM Director Communication icon which looks like a white LCD Keypad with a yellow phone in front of it. Right- click on the icon and select Port Configuration as seen below: A Device Configuration Screen will appear. If you have already connected to the xl Main Panel before either by Direct Wire or IP, proceed with steps 4a) and 4b) below. If this is the first time you have used this PC to connect to the xl Main Panel, skip to step 3b below. 4a) To add a Modem connection right-click under Communication device and select Add as seen below: 4b) Click the down arrow under Communication device and select Your Modem Type (the sample below displays the U.S. Robotics 56K Faxmodem USB ) Click the down arrow under Modem/Direct and select Modem. Click the down arrow under Answer Mode and select Standard Modulation (to connect to a Worldwide Modem or World-wide Modem and Parallel STU) OR select Bell 103 Protocol (to connect to a North American Bell 103). 7 5) Make sure Logical Tree View is Unchecked. All the following steps assume you have Logical Tree View unchecked. Procedure: In tree view, click Account Folders, double-click your account to select it, click once on Account Information to highlight it, then right click on Account Information and make sure Logical Tree View is unchecked. Click Logical Tree View to toggle checked/unchecked. There should NOT be a checkmark on the left side of Logical Tree View. Your screen SHOULD display the following: 6) Assign the comm port to the comm pool. Procedure: In Tree view, click: (1) Communications (2) Communication Pool (3) Add New Pool (4) Type in a logical Pool Name: (i.e. Modem Pool) (5) Click the Modem that is not in the pool (i.e. U.S. Robotics 56K Faxmodem ) (6) Click Add (7) The communication device will move to the left column to the right column and appear under Devices in Pool Page 7 of 11

8 7) Assign the comm pool to the account. Procedure: In tree view, click: (1) Account Folders (2) Double-click your account to select it. (3) Double-click on Configuration to expand the node (4) Click Default Panel Group (5) Click the Connection tab in the main window (6) Select Communication Pool: Modem Pool (7) Select PC Connection type: World-wide Modem OR Bell 103 Modem depending on which modem type is connected to the Main Panel (8) Type the Main Panel Telephone number (sample below) Page 8 of 11

9 8) Enter the Serial Number, Panel Code, Third Party Password and select the On Board Modem Type. Procedure: In tree view: (1) Double-click on Configuration to expand the node (2) Double-click on Panel Group to expand the node (3) Double-click on Panel to expand the node (4) Double-click on System to expand the node (5) Click Communication (6) Enter the Serial Number (7) Enter the Panel Code (8) Enter the Third party password (9) Under the On Board Modem Type, select the Modem Type: depending on which modem type is connected to the Main Panel. ***NOTE: This must match the Answer Mode selection in Port Configuration. If you selected Standard Modulation you must select Worldwide Modem or World-wide Modem and Parallel STU. If you selected Bell 103 Protocol you need to select North American Bell 103. Page 9 of 11

10 9) Do Get From Panel ***These Steps assume you have already communicated with this Main Panel and programmed it by IP or Direct Wire communications.*** Click the Communications tab in the Tree View. Click Pending/Online. Click Edit. (1) Double-click your account (2) Double-click the Panel Group (3) Double Click the Panel you will see green checkmarks appear on the Panel Group and Panel icons (4) Click the appropriate Action from the drop-down list. Panel/software updates can be: Normal (bi-directional / synchronize) Send To Panel (sends Director software settings to the Main Panel) Get From Panel (gets settings from the Main Panel from Verex Director) ***For first time connections, Send To or Get From must be used***. IF THE PANEL HAS ALREADY BEEN PROGRAMMED, SELECT GET FROM PANEL After the first time connection, you can get updates to and from the Main Panel/Director Software using a Normal connection. (5) Select "Stay Connected" for on-going data synchronization, event transmission, and/or checking status or controlling items. (6) Click OK button. Read the warning and if the communications type you selected is correct, select Yes. Page 10 of 11

11 9) Am I Connected? Return to Form View (Grid is selected). In tree view, click Account Folders, double-click your account to select it. (Check Status) Account Connection Status: The status bar at the extreme bottom of the screen continually shows the connection status for your selected account, and whether or not specific updates are in progress. So, to check the communications status of an account, simply check the status at the bottom of the screen. (Grey Box Flashes) You are finished. Modem communications should be established.
