2 Introduction The Foundation for the Developing Person was founded to provide students with opportunities to develop their own professional and personal potential. We have assembled a multi-disciplinary team who work from a Person-Centred Approach based on the work of the pioneering American Psychotherapist, Carl Rogers. In addition associates from: Jungian, Cognitive Behavioural, Psychiatric & Adlerian schools provide students with an enriching learning environment. The Person-Centred Approach has many proven applications for: educational establishments, families, community work; promoting cultural understanding and understanding of diversity; for statutory and voluntary sector service providers; working in a variety of environments and for personal development. In exploring and developing our way of being whom we want to be personally and professionally, we place the individual experience at the heart of learning, and offer a safe, facilitative and disciplined learning environment within which development can occur. The individual is always encouraged to seek what is most important and helpful to them in their personal and/or professional development. History The Foundation was founded in 1998 by Jan Hawkins who is the Director. She spent several years in the fields of Lecturing in Psychology and Special Needs before spending the past 25 years practising as a psychotherapist, group worker, supervisor and freelance trainer. Jan has written extensively on the subjects of abuse and of special needs (see website janhawkins.co.uk publications list). She also runs regular study days throughout each year for practitioners CPD. After many students and supervisees reported their difficulties in locating good, practical and developmental training for practitioners, the diploma programme was launched. As a co-director Person-Centred Workshops, from 1994, Jan trained practitioners to diploma level in working with Survivors of childhood abuse, the first initiative of its kind in Europe. The FDP has continued to run the course with a conviction that experiential learning is imperative for developing empathy as well as skills, and will be offering the following course for the next academic year: Certificate & Diploma Course for 2015/2016 Some students prefer to focus on their experiential, skills and personal/professional development. For those students, the Certificate of completion provides evidence of 120 hours of CPD. For those who prefer to complete the Diploma, which would additionally give evidence of substantial written (or creative) work, there are three assignments to complete. Both Certificate and Diploma courses may be used as part of ongoing University courses by offering evidence of learning through the Accreditation of Prior Learning routes. These may contribute to undergraduate or post graduate awards. This brochure gives an overview of the content of the three modules that make up each course and the necessary details for entry and application. 3 CERTIFICATE/DIPLOMA WORKING WITH SURVIVORS OF CHILDHOOD ABUSE The Aim The course is relevant to a wide range of professional or voluntary workers who wish to develop understanding and skills in helping people who have survived childhood abuse. Who would benefit from this course These could include: Counsellors, Psychotherapists, Social Workers, Community Mental Health and Medical professionals, Teachers, Prison and probation Officers. The Course Aims To improve the skills and understanding of practitioners for their clients who have been abused as children: by developing knowledge about and sensitivity towards our own, and other people's fears, expectations, beliefs and attitudes. To recognise the strengths and needs of people who were abused as children. To raise awareness of the effects of childhood abuse on all a clients relationships. To consider the effects of different types of abuse, sexual, physical and emotional. To foster a critical and evaluative approach to the theories and concepts which deal with childhood abuse, such as: secrecy, collusion, fantasy, false memory. To consider the issues of confrontation and of legal action. To review cultural and historical issues surrounding childhood abuse. To consider a variety of approaches to helping the healing process. Course Details The course comprises a set of three modules, detailed below. All students share the same learning environment and resources. Those seeking to work towards the Diploma rather than the Certificate, will additionally prepare an individual 3,000 word assignment (or negotiated alternative) for each module. Students are encouraged to use the assignments to deepen their empathic understanding of their clients. The modules provide a theoretical framework for the practitioner to develop their understanding of the legacy of childhood abuse and to explore applications that develop their practice in the workplace. The modules are: Module One: Module Two: Module Three: Survival Skills for Healing Assessing the where the client is in the healing process Models and Aspects of the Healing process Duration: The course takes place over one academic year comprising 6 residential weekend study blocks from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon. Fees: Award: 2,000 includes all meals, all refreshments, materials and handouts and residential accommodation in shared rooms. For those who require a single room, an additional supplement of 180 is required. Diploma students pay an additional fee of 75 to cover marking and moderating costs for their assignments. The Certificate of Attendance requires participation in at least 80% of all the modules. The Diploma additionally requires three 3,000 word assignments or negotiated alternatives (see below) Dates: 25th-27th Sept 2015; 27th -29th Nov 2015; 5th-7th Feb 2016; 22nd-24th April 2016; 20th- 22nd May 2016; 1st-3rd July 2016.

4 FURTHER INFORMATION The Course Structure The course runs over one academic year and will provide total contact time of 120 hours in residential blocks. In addition a considerable number of hours of self directed study and skills practice are expected. Diploma students will complete an assignment of 3,000 words for each of the three modules. Alternatives to the 3,000 word assignments can be submitted if negotiated in advance with course tutors as an equivalent demonstration of their learning. Alternatives might include: a creative piece of work, a presentation or a relevant work based project. Throughout the course, students will be encouraged to accept personal responsibility for their learning and to participate in seminars and experiential work. They will review and evaluate their own work, as well as offering constructive contributions to others. Support will be available throughout the course through group and individual tutorials. Course Options The Diploma course involves completing all assignments, and participation in at least 80% of the groupwork. There is an alternative for those for whom the experiential learning is the need. These students are not required to provide assignments, but will attend at least 80% of the groupwork, and will receive a Certificate of Attendance Learning & Teaching Approaches Members of the course team, together with invited specialist contributors will facilitate the courses. The emphasis of the Diploma courses is on self-directed learning. Given the objectives of the courses, tutors will offer a variety of learning media. These will include; seminars, presentation of theory, groupwork, creative activities, case studies, self, peer and tutor assessment, skills practice, reading lists and comprehensive handouts. A maximum of 20 students will be accepted in each group. Entry Requirements You will need to have a qualification in counselling and/or psychotherapy, or the equivalent (e.g. mental health training & experience, social work training & experience, clinical psychology training & experience etc.), as well as counselling experience in a voluntary or professional capacity. Personal Therapy Because of the nature of course material and the requirement for experiential learning during the training programme, applicants may need to undertake personal therapy and may find this beneficial in processing their learning. Students should make allowance for the costs and implications of this before applying for a course.

5 Accreditation for Prior Learning Through the Accreditation of Prior Learning scheme along with credits from a variety of sources, credits from this course may be used to build a portfolio towards a degree or other award. Application & Selection Procedure Applications for places on the course should be made on the enclosed form and sent with the booking fee (which is part of the course fee) made payable to the Foundation for the Developing Person. Applicants with appropriate entry requirements will be invited to a short individual interview, which may be on telephone or Skye for those who are a distance from London. Offers of places will be sent after the interview. Our application form and interview give us sufficient information to offer applicants places, or point them towards appropriate training agencies to reach the entry criteria for this course. Venue The course is run at Debden House Centre, in Debden (Loughton), Essex. This is a residential Centre situated in 50 acres of woodland. It is reached by the Central Line tube station, and M11 & M25. The Centre offers a comfortable environment, with extensive gardens, pond and woodland and excellent meals and refreshments.

7 Course Fees: The Certificate/Diploma in Working with Survivors of Childhood Abuse is fully residential, and fees include all accommodation, meals, refreshments and materials during course weekends. The fees for this course are 2000 for all students in shared accommodation. Those requiring a single room will pay a supplement of 180, and Diploma students a further supplement of 75 to cover marking and moderation of their assignments.
