1 Tim Vincent, M.S. Manager Capacity Building Program California Prevention Training Center Tim Vincent has worked in the field of HIV for over 25 years in both direct service provision with clients and in developing educational opportunities for providers. He is currently the manager of the national capacity building assistance program at The California Prevention Training Center. He has worked as a licensed mental health clinician, social worker, case manager and HIV test counselor in the past and more recently has developed nationally recognized curriculum for providers on a variety of innovative topics to promote health equity. He has led the development of trainings on social determinants of health, responding to stigma, strength-based counseling approaches, cultural sensitivity for gay, bi and other MSM, and working with HIV-positive clients. He has worked in South Africa on projects to support the engagement of HIV-positive community members into care through the building of support group leaders. He has served on statewide community planning groups, consulted with CDC on the development of national curriculum on linkage to care strategies, and has developed and conducted training of trainers in order to nationally diffuse some of the training initiatives he created. Due to his experience in the field, he is asked to speak regularly at national conferences. Promoting Health Equity: Reducing Health Disparities It is extremely important to me to do work that promotes social justice and improve health outcomes to communities that I identify with and have been a part of for most of my life. The passion, creativity, and intelligence it takes to make meaningful change in this area inspires me daily. The chasm that continues to exist between those that can successfully engage in systems of care and prevention and those that cannot, clearly points to the need for structural changes and a critical examination of the root causes. Larger factors such as racism, homophobia, HIVrelated stigma, gender-equity, educational attainment, access to healthcare need to be the focus of our work. Having the opportunity to work with providers of service in a deep and meaningful to deconstruct these factors and build strategies to respond to them to promote health equity is a tremendous privilege.
2 JaDawn Wright, M.A. Capacity Building Assistance Program Trainer/ Technical Assistance Specialist Phone: (510) JaDawn is infectiously passionate and motivated by exceptional experiences working in HIV Prevention and Care programs, for over 15 years across two continents. Earning her Master s Degree from the School for International Training in Intercultural Relations, she began her career in the Master s International Program with the Peace Corps working with the National Association of People Living with HIV/AIDS (NAPWA) as a Capacity Building Volunteer in South Africa. JaDawn s expertise in program management and curriculum development led her to a position at the University of South Florida in a youth- focused HIV prevention and care program, Youth Education Services. In this position, she worked with young people living with HIV and vulnerable youth from the LGBTQ, Homeless, Black and Latino communities helping them access sexual health services in the Tampa Bay area. JaDawn s efforts catalyzed community partners together to work in new ways and allowed for expansion of her expertise in the areas of research design and implementation. With her ability to successfully navigate both theory and practice, she joined the faculty at University of South Florida's College of Public Health. JaDawn continues to inspire learning and change on a National platform in her current position. She is developing curriculum on cultural humility, social determinants of health, and the strength based approach to assist Health Departments with the engagement of communities most impacted by health disparities. Importance of Promoting Health Equity and Reducing Health Disparities: I am thankful each day that I have a career that aligns with my purpose; creating social justice and cultivating culturally responsive practices. Promoting health equity is a life and death situation for many in my community. For far too long silence, shame, poverty, racism, and sexism have led to death. I am committed to addressing the intersectionality of these issues so that everyone can experience equality in health and so many other aspects of life.
3 Patrick Piper Training/Technical Assistance Specialist, Capacity Building Assistance Center, California Prevention Training Center Phone: (562) Patrick has over 20 years in research, implementation, training and evaluation of science-based HIV prevention interventions. He began his work in the field of HIV at Denver Public Health Department as a Program Coordinator of an Evidence-Based Intervention called Community PROMISE. He has worked with very high-risk populations including MSM who do not identify as gay, injection drug users, commercial sex workers and high-risk youth. He also has extensive experience in HIV Testing and Counseling and Case Management and received his CAC-II certification in addictions counseling. His work has been published in several journals and has been highlighted at numerous national and international conferences. Importance of Promoting Health Equity and Reducing Health Disparities: As a member of what some may call a marginalized community, marginalization has never been an option for me. I am part of an American community and have spent my life fighting for equality and social justice in this country. We all deserve to have access to, and receive, quality health care, regardless of our race or ethnicity, sexual orientation or socioeconomic status. The sad fact is that we don t. I am committed to see the day when universal health care is not just an idea or a catch-phrase, but indeed, a reality.
4 Vanessa Arias-Martinez, MPH, MA, LPC Program Manager: Training & Distance Learning PROCEED Inc., National Center for Training, Support and Technical Assistance Vanessa Arias-Martinez is a Program Manager of Training and Distance Learning at PROCEED s National Center for Training, Support, and Technical Assistance. Ms. Arias- Martinez is a bilingual public health professional with over ten years of experience in the areas of HIV/AIDS prevention and research, mental health, suicide prevention, and trauma response. She earned a Bachelor s degree in Psychology from St. John s University, a Master s in Clinical and Counseling Psychology from William Paterson University, and a Master s in Public Health with a focus on Global Health Leadership from New York University. Her proficiencies include coalition-building, curriculum and trainer development, grant writing, nonprofit governance, program evaluation, project management, and social media outreach strategies. Her work in these areas has been completed at the local, national and international level, including South Africa and Brazil. Vanessa is also a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of New Jersey, and an adjunct faculty member at William Paterson University and Bergen Community College.
5 Dena Quiñones, MPH Senior Project Manager/Training and Curriculum Development Specialist Primary Care Development Corporation (PCDC) Ms. Quiñones holds a Master of Public Health (MPH) with a wealth of executive health care and management experience, and has been working in the field of public health for the past 17 years. Ms. Quiñones provides training, technical assistance and capacity building services to healthcare organization staff in her current position as a Senior Project Manager/Training and Curriculum Development Specialist at the Primary Care Development Corporation (PCDC). Ms. Quinones work in Capacity Building Assistance has allowed for the provision of training and technical assistance to community or faith based organizations and healthcare organizations throughout the United States, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Ms. Quiñones is also an Adjunct Professor at CUNY City College of Technology in the Human Services Department. Her commitment to the field of public health is unwavering and she is eager to continue the mission of empowering and enhancing the infrastructure of community based organizations as well as healthcare organizations that are committed to providing services to the underserved.
