1 SOWELA TECHNICAL MORGAN SMITH CAMPUS Weld 2220 SYLLABUS INSTRUCTORS: LOCATION: Wally Deshotel SOWELA TECH WELDING SHOP SEMESTER: Spring 2016 TIME: 8:00AM 2:30PM Monday - Friday GENERAL OBJECTIVES: Academic competencies and occupational skills are integrated into the instructional Welding Shop Program. Competencies in the Welding Shop Program include skills that are essential to success in the occupation. The Welding Shop Program has an active program advisory committee. This committee is composed of 6 people representing employers in the local area, and meets at least twice per year. Advisory committee meetings offer the employer representatives an opportunity to review the program of instruction to ensure that desirable, relevant, and current practices are being taught. In order to ensure that each student is well versed in their responsibility to protect all physical, financial, and human resources, job-related health, safety, and fire-prevention competencies are an integral part of the Welding Shop program of instruction. Sowela has an extensive equipment inventory in the Welding Shop Program. The availability of this equipment in the Welding Shop Program insures that students are exposed to current skills practiced on equipment and materials similar to what is being used in industry. After Completion of this course the student will possess entry level skills needed to enter the field of Welding. ATTENDANCE POLICY: Students are expected to attend all classes. Instructor requires documentation for absence to be excused by the instructor discretion on excused/unexcused absences. If an absence occurs it is the student s responsibility to make up all work or exams missed, if allowed. Students who do not officially drop or withdraw within the prescribed dates for action or who discontinue attendance will receive an F in the course. Any student, who accumulates excessive absences (10% of total classes in a course within a semester) which are unexcused, may be suspended from the class for the remainder of the term and result in a grade of F for the class. The accumulation of three tardy will count as one absent. Tardy is being fifteen to thirty minutes late for class or lab. Any student, whom misses thirty minutes or more of class or lab, will be counted absent for the day. CLASS POLICIES ALL CELL PHONES AND PAGERS MUST BE TURNED TO SILENT/VIBERATE MODE OR OFF WHILE IN THE CLASS. No personal phone calls will be allowed to be made or received on school telephones. If a student needs to be contacted in the event of an emergency the caller shall call the main Sowela number and ask to have a message delivered to the student. ACADEMIC PROBATION A student who fails to maintain satisfactory academic progress (GPA of 2.0) during any term will be placed on academic probation during the following enrollment period. If the student is unable to maintain satisfactory academic progress during this enrollment period, the student is then suspended for the upcoming term. During this suspension term, the student may not enroll in any other program at SOWELA. Students reentering school after academic suspension will reenter on academic probation. Students not maintaining satisfactory academic progress after one semester of academic probation will not be allowed to enroll in any program for one calendar year from the date of the second suspension.

If you have no intention of working on your current area of study you may leave and your grades will reflect your lack of progress, tech prep students will be sent to Mr. Haley for disciplinary measures. The shop area must be kept clean, this includes sweeping, emptying of trash cans and oil containers and mopping of floors, this will be determined by the instructor, and all students must participate. Students must clean their work area and return any equipment used to its proper place daily. If the job cannot be completed in one day, work must be stopped at 2:00 so that clean up can be done each day. All activity in the shop must end by 2:30 each day without exception. All of the above rules have a direct impact upon your grades. Grades ARE NOT based on test scores alone. It is VERY important that you study and refer to these rules frequently; you will not be warned if you are breaking a rule, and your grade will be adjusted accordingly and disciplinary measures taken if needed.
