3 Highlights National Research Corporation Canada (NRCC) has conducted employee and physician experience survey projects in over 60 hospitals in Ontario since A key measure embedded in the experience surveys is the concept of engagement: Engaged employees and physicians are committed to their employer, satisfied with their work, and willing to give extra effort to achieve their organizations goals. Evidence suggests that engagement influences other major human resource goals, such as retention, job performance, absenteeism and (indirectly through the employer s reputation) recruitment. (The Relationship between Employee and Human Capital Performance, September 2012, Ontario Hospital Association) The individual question on the employee and physician experience survey tool that is most closely related to one s overall level of engagement is their rating of the organization as a place to work or practice. Using data collected between November 2010 and March 2013, this report identifies top performer hospitals based on employee and physician ratings of engagement and ratings of the hospital as a place to work/practice. The report also shows low performer and percentile scores for these same measures. Hospitals can use the percentile ranking tables included to determine where they rank compared to other organizations. Highlights of results are as follows: The overall rating of employee engagement ranged from a low of 32% to a high of 78% among the 55 hospitals included in the analysis. Employee ratings of good, very good and excellent for a hospital as a place to work ranged from a low of 46% to a top score of 99%. The top performing hospital for employee engagement was Deep River and District Hospital. Employees of Toronto Grace Health Centre, Blind River District Health Centre, Renfrew Victoria Hospital and West Park Healthcare Centre also gave high ratings of engagement. These same hospitals were top performers for employee perceptions of the hospital as a place to work. ratings of engagement among physicians were slightly higher than for employees. They ranged from a low of 39% to a high of 80%. The top performing hospital for physician engagement was Grey Bruce Health Services. Physicians who practice at Hôpital Général de Hawkesbury and District General Hospital and Southlake Regional Health Centre also gave high ratings of engagement. Physician ratings of good, very good and excellent for a hospital as a place to practice ranged from a low of 45% to a top score of 97%. These ratings are very similar to the range of scores from employees. Physicians practicing at Hôpital Général de Hawkesbury and District General Hospital gave the highest ratings for a hospital as a place to practice. Physicians practicing at Queensway Carleton Hospital and Southlake Regional Health Centre also gave high ratings. As a follow-up to this report, hospitals named above have been invited to contribute to NRCC-facilitated discussions and further reporting on practices that may have contributed to these top ratings. All participating organizations will be invited to join in on this ongoing dialogue and information sharing. 3 National Research Corporation Canada 2013
4 Methods Results are based on data collected from the NRCC Employee Experience Surveys completed between November 2010 and March 2013 and from NRCC Physician Experience Surveys completed between January 2011 and March The rating of engagement is a cumulative rating based on the percent positive scores across the following six questions: o I am proud to tell others I am part of this organization. (Strongly Agree, Agree) Neither, Disagree, Strongly Disagree o o o o o I find that my values and the organization's values are similar. (Strongly Agree, Agree) Neither, Disagree, Strongly Disagree This organization really inspires the very best in me in the way of job performance. (Strongly Agree, Agree) Neither, Disagree, Strongly Disagree, how satisfied are you with your current job? (Very Satisfied, Satisfied) Neither, Dissatisfied, Very Dissatisfied How frequently do you look forward to going to work? (Always) Usually, Sometimes, Never, how would you rate Alpha Hospital as a place to work/practice? (Excellent, Very Good, Good) Fair, Poor As stated by Graham Lowe, in his Healthcare Quarterly article (May 2012), the six items in the engagement scale measure the key concepts researchers have identified as being central to concept of engagement. The six item scale provides a single robust and comprehensive measure of employee engagement. The overall rating question is: o, how would you rate Alpha Hospital as a place to work/practice? (Excellent, Very Good, Good) Fair, Poor How is positive score calculated? A positive score includes the top one, two or three response categories depending on the number of items in the response scale and the wording of the response scale. Positive response items included in the questions above are in bold and brackets. Hospitals with less than 30 returned surveys were excluded from this analysis. The most current year of data is included in the analysis for those hospitals that have surveyed more than once during the time period for the study. 4 National Research Corporation Canada 2013

7 How Hospitals can use the tables to identify their ing rank scores range from A percentile rank shows a hospital s performance compared to other hospitals measuring the same indicators at a comparable time. For the overall question and the engagement rating we have provided a table showing the overall rating and average positive scores broken out into top performer score, low performer score and percentiles in between: 90 th, 75 th, 50 th (median) and 25 th. We have also provided a detailed Scores Table which shows the overall rating and % positive score associated with percentiles ranging from 1 st percentile to 99 th percentile. These percentile rankings range from 1 to 99, where a percentile rank of 50 denotes the median performance. A percentile rank of 50 means that the % positive scores for 50% of the hospitals in the grouping fall below the score associated with the median (or 50% percentile) and 50% of the scores are higher. If a hospital s score converts to an 85 percentile rank then the hospital scored higher than 85 percent of the hospitals included in that grouping and 15% of hospitals included in the analysis scored higher than the hospital. Hospitals can use these detailed tables to identify their percentile rankings by first obtaining their hospital s engagement theme and overall rating scores in their corporate action plan report. Refer to the ing table and identify the score closest to the hospital s score. The percentile rank to the left of the % positive score represents the hospital s percentile ranking and shows how the hospital compares to others. 7 National Research Corporation Canada 2013
