2 Activity #64- Energy Generation Types of Energy Sources Fossil Fuels CPE Thermal KE (of steam & turbine) electrical energy Remains of plants and animals millions of years ago Nuclear Nuclear Energy KE electrical Energy Uranium which is found in rocks Biomass Thermal KE electrical energy Trees, crops, animal wastes and some garbage. nonrenewable examples-coal, Natural Gas, Petroleum(AKA crude oil). Gasoline is made from Petroleum -Fossil fuels are burned to heat water and produce steam and spin a turbine & generator which produces electricity. nonrenewable -Splits uranium atoms apart which releases energy to heat water. -similar to fossil fuels only using Biowaste like wood, plants and some garbage. -Also, gas is produces when the wastes decompose. Page: Gives a lot more energy than other resources (most efficient) Cheap We have a lot Non-renewable Pollution & Carbon dioxide requires lots of land for mining and pipelines No air pollution Uranium is cheap and abundant Non-renewable Radioactive waste Danger to nearby communities Expensive to build Nuclear power plants Decreases amount of waste Quick and easy to produce Gives off pollution Not as much energy as fossil fuels Hard to transport

Low pollution After it is built, it is cheap and easy to get. Smells bad Limited locations Expensive to build Low pollution and waste (clean) After it s built, it s cheap and easy to get. Expensive to build causes flooding disturbs nearby environment and fish Limited locations Low pollution and waste Does not work well at night or when cloudy not efficient expensive Requires a lot of space
