1 Department Profile Welcome to Weobley High School s Music Department. We are an extremely busy and committed team who encourage all our musicians to develop their talents by giving them many opportunities to showcase and celebrate their successes. We make a substantial contribution to the life of the school as well as our local community. All pupils study Music in Years 7, 8 and 9 and follow a course which is based on national curriculum requirements which ensures progression across Key Stage 3. Schemes of work are broad and varied, combining traditional and modern approaches to music making. Throughout Key stage 3 all pupils assessment results/progress/skills are recorded in pupils individual files which are kept in the classroom. Pupils in Year 10 may opt for BTEC First Award in Music or Edexcel GCSE Music receiving 2 one hour lessons per week. All course work is marked according to the marking criteria in line with the specification. Ofsted Music Subject Inspection 2009 The overall effectiveness of music is good. Achievement and standards in music are good The overall quality of teaching and learning is good The quality of the curriculum and extra -curricular provision is good overall The leadership and management of music are good overall Standards at Key Stage 4 are well above the national average. Students attain above average standards at the end of Key Stage 3. In both Key stages students attain the highest standards and demonstrate their musical understanding and creativity most effectively when they are engaged in musical activities which focus on the development of aural skills. Good standards are attained overall in extra-curricular activities with high quality performances being achieved in choral and whole School Musical Events Page 1

2 Ofsted Inspection 2013 Outstanding Lesson Observation of the Subject Leader by Ofsted Lead Inspector in September Resources The Department has two Music teachers, augmented by six visiting peripatetic teachers who visit the school each week to provide tuition for instrumentalists and singers. These lessons take place either during school hours, on a rota basis, or at lunch times. Music resources are modern and up to date. Our infrastructure provides an excellent learning environment, with a classroom set up with keyboards for performance tasks, practice rooms and ICT facilities. Extra -Curricular Activities Music is a thriving and important part of school life and we aspire for high standards of music making. The school has a large Choir and soloists who have the opportunity to perform in presentation evenings, carol services as well as concerts. There is a major musical production every other year which is always a great success. Recent musicals have included: Scrooge, The Boyfriend, The Sound Of Music, The King And I, Grease, Annie, We Will Rock You and :The Wiz. Marking and Assessment The assessment sections of the schemes of work will indicate the musical focus and the skills, knowledge and understanding which need to be demonstrated in a particular unit of work. Practical work is marked and assessed as individual pupils attain the levels linked to clear criteria within each unit. Oral feedback from pupil to teacher, teacher to pupil and pupil to pupil forms part of the dialogue that relates directly to learning objectives and outcomes. In music lessons the oral feedback (Formative assessment) is constructive and informative and enables pupils to take the next steps in their learning. Written feedback (Summative and Formative Assessment) is given at the end of each unit of work so pupils are able to reflect on the strengths and weaknesses of their work and identify ways in which they can improve. Pupils work should be praised as much as possible and merits awarded as appropriate. Page 2

3 Subject Title Music: BTEC Level 2 First Award in Music Qualifications Equivalent to 1 GCSE grades A*-C Exam Board/Syllabus Edexcel Levels of Entry A keen interest in developing performing skills on an instrument or voice. Final Assessment 75% is coursework which is internally assessed through pupils completing 3 units. Pupils will be assessed through completing tasks, gaining evidence and assignments. Work is internally marked against set criteria to a pass, merit or distinction and checked by the exam board to ensure the pupils receive the grades that they are entitled to. 25% of the course will be completed through a 1 hour exam which will be externally assessed. Brief Syllabus Details The course is made up of the following four units: Introducing Music Performance Managing a Music Product Introducing Music Composition The Music Industry What will I do in The group size is usually smaller than other subjects and this lends itself to the lessons? nature of the work. You will: Gain knowledge of and develop music performance and personal management skills. Manage the planning, delivery and promotion of a live concert. Discover a range of compositional techniques and produce musical ideas which form a complete piece of music. Gain awareness and underpinning knowledge of the basic structure of the music industry, taking into consideration some of the roles undertaken by those working in it. Homework Homework will be used to complete assignments or catch up on any work outstanding. Ongoing Assessment All assessments for the BTEC Award are based on the achievement of specified Page 3

4 Differentiation Extra-Curricular Qualities for Success Beyond GCSE modules. An ability to meet deadlines is an essential part of this course. Pupils will be taught in a mixed ability group. Pupils needs will be met through varied teaching styles and tasks. Pupils must be willing to participate in activities in their free time, at lunchtimes and after school. Enthusiasm and dedication A willingness to be part of a very new and exciting course Ability to meet deadlines A BTEC Level 2 Award is a nationally recognised qualification which prepares you for either progression to an Advanced course such as the BTEC Level 3 National Awards in Music and Music Technology or an AS/A2 level in Music or Music Technology. Careers in the Music Industry, publishing, entertainment, teaching or any job which involves communication and expressive skills. *Some Pupils may also choose to take Grade 5 Theory and Associated Board or Guildhall Examinations whilst they are studying the BTEC Course. All pupils study the following units: Unit 1: Performing Music Pupils submit one solo performance and one ensemble performance Unit 2: Composing Music Pupils submit two compositions under controlled conditions Unit 3: Listening and Appraising This is a 90 minute exam and pupils answer a variety of questions about the Page 4

You will study: How to perform on and compose for your chosen instrument A range of music from western classical tradition and other world cultures Homework is set regularly and forms an essential part of the coursework. Record a solo (15%) Record an ensemble (15%) Compose two compositions (30%) Listening and Appraising Exam (40%) This incorporates a variety of question styles, including single answer questions, multiple choice, notation completion, grid completion and a longer extended writing answer. These will be in response to an audio CD which will play excerpts of some of the set works. (All coursework is carried out in controlled conditions) The course aims to ensure that all pupils receive the right kind of learning provision to meet their own needs at all ability levels and aspirations. All pupils will have the opportunity to attend the extra- curricular ensembles. This course encourages pupils to become: Informed performers Skilled composers Understanding listeners AS or A level in Music, Music Technology Edexcel Level 3 vocational qualifications such as BTEC National in Music Performing, Music Technology or Performing Arts. Examples of jobs:- Primary or Secondary Teacher, Music Therapist, Music Technologist, Nursery Assistant Music Journalist, Music Producer, Sound Recording Engineer, Singer, Band Member, Composer, Concert Organiser, Arts Administration. *Some pupils may also choose to take Grade 5 Theory and Associated Board or Guildhall Examinations whilst they are studying the GCSE Course.
