They will not be considered for transfer credits. COURSE EQUIVALENCY: This course may meet the requirements of a class in music business survey or mass communications. OFFICE HOURS: Our physical and virtual doors are always open. If you have a question please don t hesitate to ask. If you would like to set up an appointment, we can do that too. As a courtesy, try not to call after 11PM or before 9AM, unless there is an emergency. CATALOGUE DESCRIPTION: Through readings, lectures and seminars, the course will give up-to-the-minute insight into the inner workings of the music industry. Emphasis will be given to career possibilities and the gifts and skills required to succeed in each of the major areas, including work as a performer, songwriter, record producer and engineer, artist manager, booking agent, concert promoter, record retailer, entertainment attorney, A&R executive, marketing executive, sales executive and music journalist. Students will gain an understanding of the structure and methodologies of a typical U.S. record company, including A&R, marketing, radio promotion, public relations, sales & distribution, product development, art, manufacturing and business affairs. 2 OBJECTIVES Give each student core knowledge in recording, sound reinforcement and concert production Give each student core knowledge in basic contract writing and interpretation Give each student core knowledge in how a Christ-centered vision for the arts is sustainable throughout a career To help students begin to live a life that wholly incarnates their faith lived in a world of contemporary entertainment METHODOLOGY: This course is divided into three concurrent areas of study: Area 1: Technology - It is imperative that students in all three tracks of study have a basic command of the technology specifically related to music making. This series of lectures will require the student to know the names of the gear they are using, technical jargon/slang common to the industry, basic signal flow in various environments, understand the effects of compression/gate, interpret a stage plot diagram and trouble shoot cables. Phase 2: Music Business - Each student will have a basic understanding of various industry contracts like riders, licensing agreements, etc. with an emphasis on key terms like all-in, %, door deal, back end, guarantee and settlement. Various formal organizations like PRO s and record labels are illustrated as flow charts which track a song from creation to delivery. Finally, each student will know how to file a copyright, build a resume and interview for a job. Phase 3: Artistry - This piece of the core requires each student to understand the language musicians use to make music. This includes an understanding of the major food groups of instruments used to create sound which include various guitar/amp combinations and vintage keyboards. Finally, students explore the Nashville numbering system, stage etiquette and the reason d existence for creating art. In addition to the above areas of study, one class period per week is devoted to a critical listening session which provides each faculty member an opportunity to discuss how that song became a seminal moment in musical history; including it s impact on art, technology, business and popular culture. 3 COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Attendance: Woody Allen has said, the key to success is showing up. We agree. Students are required to attend all classes, including core lectures, practicum, CMC Film Festival, CMC Live performances and such other times as may be designated by faculty. Habitual tardiness or absence, defined as 5 or more tardies/absences, will result in the reduction of one full letter grade. Preparation: Students are expected to come to class fully prepared to discuss all relevant materials. Participation: A successful student will regularly participate in classrooms discussions and Q&A periods. Mere passive observation will negatively impact your grade. Quizzes: Quizzes will be given periodically to ascertain a student s retention of previous lecture materials. Reflection Papers: Brief responsive papers will be regularly required to determine a student s integration of lecture materials. Reading, Listening and Viewing: Extensive reading, listening and on-line videos will be required. Student participation will be monitored via discussions, reports, quizzes and papers. Practicum: All CMC lectures are tied to hands-on projects and real-life practicum, the successful completion of which is a major component of your grade. REQUIRED READING: Copyright Forms, ACM Publications Digital Millennium Copyright Act Church Copyright Licensing International, CCLI Know Your Connectors, Warren Pettit Know Your Terms, Warren Pettit Page 3 of 6
4 GRADING: It is important to note that grades are not an assessment of your soul, your potential, or even hard work. They are an assessment of the quality of your work in this class. We also place great value on your attitude and demonstration of improvement. The following is the CCCU Student Programs grading policy. This policy is administered by all CCCU Student Programs worldwide. The CCCU prides itself on the competitive nature of its admissions and its courses. Please note that a B is a good grade that represents competent and complete work. A grades are earned only by superior work. By that definition, A grades are a minority of grades earned by students. It is not impossible to earn an A, but it is difficult. A = Excellent creative and integrative work, revealing superior analysis and content. B = Good work, competent and complete C = Adequate work D = Less than adequate work F = Completely fails to meet expectations We are always open to discussing any concerns over grading. If you have any questions or concerns, please come see me. FINAL GRADE BREAKDOWN 25% Attendance, preparation and participation in class 60% Accuracy, creativity and professionalism of completed classroom and practicum assignments 15% Faculty review GRADE PERCENTAGE VALUES Letter grades have the following percentage values: A A B B B (same pattern continues for other letter grades) Page 4 of 6
5 REPORTING GRADES Final grades for the course will be mailed to students and their home institution after the completion of the semester.
