Masters Pathway to University of Sydney JMC Academy is pleased to offer a Master s degree pathway for JMC Bachelor of Creative Arts graduates to Sydney College of the Arts, the University of Sydney. Students who successfully complete the Bachelor of Creative Arts in 3D Animation, Game Development or Film and Television will meet the academic entry requirement for admission to the Master of Moving Image at the Sydney College of the Arts Graduate School (The University of Sydney), subject to the following conditions: 1. JMC graduates must submit a portfolio of creative work, except where they have achieved a Distinction average; 2. Students must satisfy the postgraduate English language entry requirements of the University of Sydney. 10 Songwriting Songwriters hold a vital place in the musical marketplace. The field of songwriting has grown exponentially over the past few years, providing a promotional launching pad (as well as a potentially lucrative income stream) for songwriters. Program Outcomes This course is designed to develop well-rounded song writers who can write for a variety of uses and styles. Students will benefit from weekly individual songwriting tutorials as well as ensemble performance experience and an instrument studies stream. Alongside learning the fundamentals of melody and harmony, lyric writing and contemporary music arrangements, the course also includes a music production component in which students will culminate their learning with the production of their own song demo. 12 Audio Engineering & Sound Production JMC Academy has been delivering programs in Audio Engineering for over 30 years and has the longest running accredited course in Australia. The curriculum has continued to evolve in line with industry standards whilst meeting the expectations and changing needs of the sector. Program Outcomes By combining fundamental audio principles with practical application and training on a variety of equipment styles (traditional and modern) and in a diverse range of settings, students graduate with the ability and flexibility to undertake a wide range of industry projects. 16 3D Animation JMC Academy s 3D Animation program has been developed in association with studio artists from major companies, including Pixar and Animal Logic. Underpinned by principles in technology, science and artistic practice, the curriculum provides a strong foundation from which students may apply and adapt to new developments and technologies in the animation arena. Program Outcomes JMC Academy s 3D Animation course equips students with the artistic and technical skills, storytelling craft, underlying theory and deep critical and creative thinking needed to excel in this dramatically expanding area. Animation students receive a strong foundation in the core principles of visual narrative and animation design. From this foundation students explore 2D and 3D animation, motion capture, acting for animation, character rigging and examine the creative process of taking an idea from conception to final product. 20 Film & Television Production JMC Academy s Film and Television program was the first of its kind to receive formal accreditation in Australia. The course focuses on the creative, logistical and technical aspects of content production. Program Outcomes This highly practical program focuses on equipping students with a wide scope from which to develop their film-making abilities. While exploring screenwriting, directing, cinematography, post production, screen studies and motion graphics, students also develop critical thinking and contextual awareness through international cinema and genre studies. Students build their creative portfolio with a range of original film projects including a television studio program, documentary, commercial, music video and feature film. They also form the crew on each other s productions, increasing their working knowledge of various production roles. 22 Digital Design JMC Academy s Digital Design course explores the design of the Web, Apps, Spaces and Experiences. Students are equipped with the design tools to turn their ideas into reality things that can be visualised, touched, heard and actively experienced. Program Outcomes In this course students will explore the design process and build their creative thinking and design literacy through a series of creative briefs. With industryconnected lecturers and studio based learning, students will have an experience that closely matches the industry. 24 Student matters Student Visas Whilst JMC Academy is able to provide some visa information, we strongly suggest you contact the Australian diplomatic mission in your country or one of our agent representatives. For information regarding visa eligibility and general visa procedures, please visit prior to applying to study. Any school-aged dependants accompanying students to Australia may be required to pay full fees if they are enrolled in either a government or non-government school. Welfare arrangements for under 18s International students who will not be 18-year-of-age at the time their course starts must make necessary welfare arrangements to satisfy their visa conditions. Please refer to our website for more information. Accommodation and Living Expenses The cost of living in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane depends largely on lifestyle, choice of accommodation and social life. As a general guide, students can expect to spend an average of AU$390 per week on rent, food, and public transport. This does not allow for entertainment, study, private transport, utilities, or clothing costs. Whilst accommodation is not available on campus, our International Services staff can suggest suitable accommodation services within reasonable proximity to each campus. Text Books and Equipment Students are required to purchase textbooks and equipment as required for their course. You will be given a list of requirements at the time of enrolment. Health Cover You are required to obtain health cover for yourself and accompanying family members for the duration of your student visa. JMC Academy can purchase Overseas Student Health Cover on your behalf. JMC Academy s key provider is NIB. See for more information. Working in Australia The Australian Government allows international students to be employed for up to 40 hours per fortnight, though JMC recommends no more than 32 hours per fortnight. Further information is available at Orientation A pre-arrival orientation video is supplied to students, followed by an on-campus orientation prior to each intake. Students will be given a tour of the local area, including access to important facilities. Resource Centre All JMC Academy campuses are equipped with Resource Centres that are staffed by qualified librarians who can also provide academic and student support. JMC Academy students also have access to the online journal catalogue Proquest. Modes of study All courses are offered full-time and are delivered on JMC Academy premises. Learning opportunities off-campus, such as performances, projects and excursions, may also be provided. ESOS Framework Education Services for Overseas Students The Australian Government wants overseas students in Australia to have a safe, enjoyable and rewarding place to study. Australia s laws promote quality education and consumer protection for overseas students. These laws are known as the ESOS framework and they include the Education Services for Overseas (ESOS ) Act 2000 and the National Code. 25 Entry Requirements International students must meet JMC Academy s admission criteria and Australia s international student requirements. These include: Successful completion of a senior Secondary School certificate English proficiency: minimum IELTS 6.0 overall (with no single band score below 5.5) or equivalent Interview Applicants must be at least 17 years of age on commencement of studies. Applicants under the age of 18 must have a legal guardian in Australia. In some cases JMC Academy can assist in making suitable welfare arrangements. Music Performance applicants must undertake an audition. Songwriting students may submit an audition OR folio demonstrating their original work. Animation, Game Development and Digital Design students must submit a portfolio. Applications will be accepted until two weeks before the course commences, but please note that visa applications can take considerably longer than two weeks to process. Please contact the Australian Embassy in your home country for recommended timeframes for processing your visa application. Requirements for Alternative Admission For applicants who have not completed senior high school, entry to a Diploma, upon successful completion of which articulation into a Bachelor Degree program is guaranteed, is based on: Evidence of minimum completion of Year 10, or equivalent, with an appropriate VET qualification and/or relevant industry work experience. Written application (with compulsory 200-word statement to assess functional literacy) An interview to identify potential difficulties that may impact on learning. Demonstrated commitment with satisfactory communication skills sufficient to indicate reasonable likelihood of successful completion of Diploma studies. A portfolio of work or performance audition (if applicable) Applicants must be 17 years or older on commencement of studies. Demonstrated (above average) creative aptitude or expertise pertinent to field of interest. Alternative English Language Proficiency JMC Academy also recognizes the following as having satisfied the normal English proficiency requirements for admission to our courses subject to demonstrating competence in the interview that forms part of the application process. These should have been completed within the last two years: Completion of one year of full-time university study in an English-speaking country or where the language of instruction was English Completion of one year of full-time study in a tertiary education program in Australia where the minimum entry requirement was evidenced to be an overall IELTS band score of not less than 5.5 (or equivalent) Completion of the final two years of senior high school in an English-speaking country or where the language of instruction was English Country-specific alternatives.
