3 BA (Hons) Popular Music BA (Hons) Popular Music is an exciting new programme for those seeking a career in the popular music industry of the 21st century. It blends together three key areas for study: popular music practice, popular music business, and popular music theory. Students will spend year 1 studying modules in all three areas before selecting their own specialism via optional modules in Years 2 and 3, and thus shaping their studies to pursue the area of the industry most suited to them. BA (Hons) Popular Music students will: learn how to create songs from initial idea through to post-production; discuss and engage with performance and musicology in relation to songwriting, production, fashion, genre, and ethnographic study; learn professional and home studio skills; critically engage with popular music lyrics; learn about the industry and create business plans and marketing strategies for independent record labels and tours. The practical modules will give students experience with songwriting (both lyrics and melody), production, mixing, and mastering. The business modules will provide an understanding of how the industry works now and may work in the future, equipping students with the skills to successfully market their own work and the work of other acts, whilst offering an opportunity to create music reviews, critiques, and feature articles. The modules in music criticism will allow students to engage with popular music on a critical/theoretical level, analysing the work of contemporary artists based on an understanding of the history of pop music whilst exploring music s role in fashion, sexuality, and politics. This new award will be attractive to a diverse range of students who wish to further their academic knowledge and subject expertise alongside a passion for music. Key modules include: Introduction to Home Recording and Production skills; Digital Composition; Music and Marketing; Popular Music Studies: Ethnicity, Diversity, and Sexuality; Music and Film; Album Study; Media Campaign Management. The entry process will be dependent on both tariff points (not exclusive to Music and Music Technology AS and A2 awards) and an interview, where students will be required to show a competence on an instrument (including voice), in production techniques, a grounding in critical or cultural theory, or a basic understanding of business and marketing practices. Students receive around 12 hours of contact time per week which includes practical workshops, lectures, seminars and individual tutorials. Throughout the three years of study, students gradually become independent learners, choosing to study the areas of Popular Music which interest them most. Core modules Year 1 Production Theory Music Journalism 1: Feature Articles and Interviews Production and Songwriting Popular Music Theory 1: Ethics, Politics, Philosophy Music Industry Skills Year 2 Professional Placement Popular Music Theory 2: Ethnicity and Sexuality Optional modules include Composing Song Lyrics; Music and Fashion; Music Journalism 2: Reviews and Criticism; Re mixing and Sampling; Studio skills: Mixing and Mastering; Event Design, Marketing, and Management 1

Staff and students form a community of learners who, together and independently, seek to generate and exchange knowledge. Over the duration of the course, students develop independent and critical learning, building confidence and expertise progressively through independent and collaborative research, problem solving, and analysis with the support of staff. Students take responsibility for their own learning and are encouraged to make use of the wide range of available learning resources available. In addition to the formally scheduled contact time (i.e. lectures, seminars etc), students of Popular Music are encouraged to access academic support from staff within the course team, personal tutors, and the wide range of services to students within the University. Students will have the opportunity to work with the University record label (Splendid Fred Records) in marketing, legal, production or songwriting capacities. Assessment Students study a combination of practice and theory through practical classes and workshops, lectures, seminars and tutorials. Written work takes the form of essays, portfolios of work, websites and journals.
