St. Paul s United Methodist Church 2013 Missional Budget Pray...give...grow! Missional Budget Growth in 2013 We began worshiping in our beautifully remodeled Sanctuary on Sunday, August 12, A new Sanctuary roof was also completed which will protect our remodel for years to come. Praise God! What a joy it is to worship God in this glorious facility which provides an even more inviting atmosphere for visitors and others in our community. Your financial commitments to The Big Fix made this possible. We pray that all financial commitments made through April 2014 will be fulfilled as this initiative was/is beyond the General Budget. Glory be to God for our beautiful Sanctuary! Why does this matter? From January 2011 through August 2012, St. Paul s United Methodist Church received 76 new members of which 50 of those joined the church by a first time profession of faith or reaffirmation of faith. Our top priority is to reach out to folks who are without a faith community and to offer the unconditional love of Christ. What should I do? As you consider your next steps in partnering with St. Paul s to bring our mission to life, we would ask you to engage in the following activities: Read this Missional Budget thoroughly Pray Make a decision Act on that decision by making a commitment to the 2013 General Budget by turning in your Commitment Card by Sunday, November 11, 2012 Accept the joy that comes from faithful service. 1

The point is this: the one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. II Corinthians 9:6-7 Undesignated General Budget Do you wonder how St. Paul s United Methodist Church manages its money? Where does it go? What does it fund? What does it cost to fund the major programs of the church? This Missional Budget is our attempt to answer these questions. While copies of detailed monthly reports are available, this Missional Budget does a far better job of explaining just how ministry at St. Paul s UMC is funded. Take a moment to read how our money has been distributed over the past twelve months (September 2011 August 2012). The final 2013 budget will be determined once we can project our income which will occur at the end of the year. Worship: $232,516 or 17.8% We have over 300 worship services a year. These include weekly Sunday worship, and special worship events around holidays, weddings and funerals. These costs include a percentage of our pastoral staff compensation, musician s compensation and support, choir and band support, custodian and custodial costs, technology expenses, sanctuary maintenance, childcare, and administrative support. 2 Discipleship and Community Building: $304,930 or 23.4% These costs include a percentage of the pastoral staff compensation, support and staffing for youth ministry, children s ministry, senior adult ministry, sports ministry, educational classes and curriculum. It includes specific ministries like Upward Sports, VBS, Sunday school, welcoming new members, nursery and child care expenses. Included are a percentage of the costs of administrative support, general office supplies and more. We have included $84,000 of debt service in this category to reflect the purpose and use of the Life Center. Administration: $124,451 or 9.5% We work hard to be careful and efficient with all spending, especially administrative costs. These costs include a percentage of the pastoral staff compensation. Compensation for the office staff, paper, copier leases, general office supplies, financial management, audits and more are included in these administrative costs. Campus and Facilities Maintenance: $145,514 or 11.1% Walk around our beautiful campus and notice how it is well kept. The landscaping is immaculate, bathrooms are clean, the parking lot is maintained, the air conditioners work, utilities are paid and countless facility requests are met each day. We have approximately 50 events on our campus Monday through Friday each week. This does not include the wide range of worship services, groups and classes that meet on Sunday. This requires the constant vigilance of over 12 hours of custodial work daily along with the work of our facilities manager. The cost for improvements and deferred maintenance to our Sanctuary will be funded beyond the General Budget by money raised by The Big Fix (see next page). 3

The United Methodist Church: $114,819 or 8.8% As Christians in the United Methodist tradition we are not simply independent congregations. We are a part of the covenantal community known as the United Methodist Church. We are members of the Desert Southwest Annual Conference and the financial support we share represents our fair share of the DSW Annual Conference budget. Over the past twelve months, we have not been able to pay 100% of our fair share but rather 75%. Paying 100% of our fair share is our tradition, our expectation and highest goal. We are making progress toward this goal and expect to be meeting it no later than We provide covenantal support for Christians all over the world. UMCOR is the first to come and the last to leave all major natural disasters in the USA and the world. We work to train and prepare clergy and covenant together to support our local churches. Let us encourage you to go to to learn more about our UMC. Designated Money The Big Fix: $263,343 or 20.2% The Big Fix began in May 2011 with financial commitments made through May Since the beginning, a total of $327,765 has been received with $263,343 spent in the past twelve months (September 2011 through August 2012.) Key expenditures during 2012 were the Sanctuary remodel and the new roof. Additional upgrades/replacements still to be addressed include air conditioners in both the Sanctuary and Brummet Hall. 4 Outreach Funded Beyond the General Budget: $120,548 or 9.2% St Paul s UMC funds much of our mission work through designated giving beyond the General Budget. This represents work in John Dean Town, Liberia, West Africa, TMM Family Services, UMCOR disaster giving, U of A Wesley Foundation, children s scholarships, the Community Food Bank, Operation Hospitality and much more. Much of our mission giving is represented by gifts of goods and services things like school supplies, food baskets for the holidays and more. Growth Realized through our Ministries Existing ministries at St. Paul s are vital, alive and pulsating with energy. Thanks to a highly competent and passionate staff, we are seeing growth, not only in terms of numbers of participants, but also in the form of lives being changed. Below is an update on several (but not all) of St. Paul s ministries. Children s Ministry This year St. Paul's Children's Ministries has grown in depth and character. Soon St. Paul's will be able to articulate the learning objectives and goals for our Sunday School ministries, while putting these objectives into practice through a variety of different events, including children being fully included in the sacrament of communion each month in worship. 5

Preschool St. Paul s Preschool, now in its 48 th year, serves the community of East and Southeast Tucson by providing educational and social opportunities for 3, 4 and 5 year old children. The council is currently assessing new opportunities to ensure our program continues to meet the current needs of students and families. Once our preschool families experience the love and fellowship of our school, many of them come back to our church to take part in some of the many other activities at St. Paul's. There are also those who have become members after their positive preschool experience. It is the goal of the preschool to share the love of learning with the children, and provide them the necessary tools to succeed and excel in their future educational experiences. MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) St. Paul s MOPS recently began its fifth year and has grown from ten moms in year one to now serving approximately 24 and only a few are church members. Our goal is to offer moms a place to become reacquainted with themselves and to learn from each other s mistakes and experiences in a faithfilled community. We want our moms never to feel like they are alone on the mothering road. Every year we have had moms with students attending the preschool. This year we have the largest number so far, with seven of our moms having students at the preschool. St. Paul s MOPS has a Steering Team which organizes and does all the planning and preparations for the group. It is currently made up of 10 moms who volunteer their time to create this very special experience for moms. The Steering Team tries to offer information and advice from experts in the community regarding a wide range of topics at least once a month, but our most important product has been the development of lifelong friendships and relationships which feed the minds and souls of moms while encouraging a deeper faith and connection with God. Youth Ministry The Youth Program has grown into an amazing place for teens to be connected and serve Christ. The year 2013 will continue to see Youth Ministries growing strong and vibrant, as our youth continue to be invested in leadership development, Youth in Mission, weekend retreats, confirmation, Sunday school classes and the church community. Prayers, volunteers and financial support are vital to our success and continued growth thank you for your involvement. Adult Spiritual Growth Bible studies, classes and covenant groups for adults are alive and well at St. Paul's. With approximately 10 new short term classes being offered in the year 2012, seasoned small group veterans and people who previously had never participated in small groups found a place of connection with their church family. From Christianity & Islam to studies on the books of the Bible, St. Paul's seeks to offer classes and groups that will meet people exactly where they are in their walk with Christ. We will continue to do so well into the future. Senior Adult Ministries There are a wide range of ministries and activities for senior adults at St. Paul's. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday over 100 seniors meet in the Life Center for Stretching and Strengthening class. On Sunday mornings, classes for seniors meet at 8:00 AM, 9:30 AM and 11:00 AM. An in depth Bible Study Class meets every Monday morning. Tapping into people s artistic side, a watercolor class meets on Mondays at 10:30 AM. Every month we have tours and hikes for seniors. We also have an active Health Ministry that provides workshops on health related topics of concern to seniors. 7

Sports Ministries Sports ministries at St. Paul s offer healthy, friendly competition while discouraging competition that fosters a "win at all cost" attitude. Sports ministries allow adults and children a way to learn about God and develop friendships within a Christian community. Leaders strive to make the sports ministry oriented with an emphasis on knowing that God is more important than sports. Our activities are open to all and we do not turn people away because of financial constraints, religious preferences, or physical handicaps. We constantly strive to develop new programs that will help us invite all to become disciples of Jesus Christ and bring others to the church in a more traditional way. Music Ministries Music is alive and dancing at St. Paul's! This year Grace Multiplied, under the direction of David Ragland, has made a special success of connecting with the congregation from their new position in the front of the church. Four talented musicians lead the highest quality liturgy at 11:00 AM. An amazing volunteer is currently working with a Children's Choir. Brent Burmeister continues as our gifted pianist, and at 8:00 AM on Sunday mornings the Early Bird Choir, under the direction of Wayne Nelson, leads us in a celebration of our Gospel music heritage. The St. Paul's Harp Choir, under the direction of Dr. Carrol McLaughlin, continues to bring joy to worship and additional performances outside the church. Strategic Task Forces 2012 was a banner year as we continued to develop lay leaders in our community! Over 100 individuals were involved in the various task force groups currently formed at St. Paul s. We are blessed with so many talented individuals at St. Paul s and look forward to developing even more leaders in the upcoming year. Please take a moment and celebrate key task force accomplishments: 1.) Stewardship Development Success: The First Annual amazing July 4th Scholarship Silent Auction Event welcomed over 350 people and raised $5,000 toward scholarships. The St. Paul s Foundation sponsored this event. 2.) Community Events Task Force Successes: The First Annual Halloween Daze Event (250 children attended) and The Risen Son Fun Run/Walk Event held the Sunday after Easter (160 attended). 3.) Adult Invitational Learning Success: Currently designing learning opportunities to be offered in a systematic way throughout ) Developing Relationships between Parents and Children Success: Implemented Spiritual Learning at Home. All Sunday school classes have a take-home curriculum and an incentive program for both children and parents to complete the curriculum on a weekly basis. 8 9

5.) Developing Relationships among Men Success: Implemented a Covenant Group for Father s with Children at Home. Planning is underway for additional men s covenant groups. 6.) A Welcoming Sunday Experience Success: Our Welcome Table is a key part of our Sunday morning culture. We now have committed lay leaders (adults and children) covering our table every week, thus creating an even more welcoming atmosphere for our visitors. We are called to be a community of generosity and love where we invite others to join us in becoming disciples of Jesus Christ for the good of the world. 7.) Welcome to and Integration into the Community Success: Name Tags are part of our Sunday morning culture supporting our belief that knowing each other s names is an integral part of developing connections within the community. 8.) Photography in Motion Success: Created a team of volunteer photographers who attend our many functions throughout the year; capturing each event in a joyful manner. 9.) John Dean Town Success: Provided school supplies and uniforms to 200 children in John Dean Town for The money was raised by selling ornaments during the Advent season.
