1 BIO 108 A&B - HUMAN BIOLOGY FALL 2016 Instructor: Ms. Linda McNally Office: 288 Watson Phone: x2886 Class Meeting Times: Lecture: TR 9:40-10:55 AM (Wall 210) Lab: W 1:30-4:20; R 1:40-4:20 PM (Watson 140) Office hours: You are always welcome to stop by any time my office door is open or to make an appointment with me for a day/time that works for your schedule. My scheduled office hours are Tuesdays 1:45-3:00 PM and Wednesdays 10:00-11:30 AM. I will make every effort to be in my office during these times, but will happily arrange another time to meet with you if needed. Course Description: Human Biology is a non-majors course designed to give you an introduction to the science of biology by exploring human health, physiology, and disease. My goal is to provide you with information to enable you to understand the functioning of your body, the effects of disease, risk factors for disease, and disease prevention. We will also examine human genetics and genetic diseases and we ll explore how humans develop in the womb, from conception to birth. During the semester, we will focus on many of the issues that you are likely to encounter at some time in your life. This course will provide you with a solid information base on which to make informed and intelligent decisions concerning the various issues you may face in the future. Student Learning Outcomes: Students completing this course will be able to: 1) Explain the functioning of various bodily systems using appropriate biological/medical terminology. 2) Illustrate how multiple organ systems interact to maintain overall health. 3) Synthesize concepts from biology, chemistry, and physics to illustrate the importance of form and function to human physiology and health. 4) Apply biological concepts to real life scenarios regarding human development, physiology and disease. 5) Apply the process of scientific inquiry to answer questions regarding biological processes related to human health and disease. 6) Evaluate human biology/health information from scientific and popular media sources. 7) Communicate biological information effectively in written and oral formats. Textbook: Human Biology Concepts and Current Issues, 6 th ed. by Michael Johnson To keep your costs lower we will use this older edition of the textbook. It is available at the bookstore & various online sites or as an "e-book at or Moodle & You can access course announcements, assignments, lecture PPTs & other materials on our Moodle course website I will also periodically send announcements regarding class issues so you should check your Davidson account regularly too!

2 Grades: Your final grade in this course will be calculated as follows: 3 lecture reviews (100 pts. each) = 45% (15% each) Cumulative final exam = 20% 2 lab tests = 20% (10% each) Additional assignments (homework, quizzes, etc.) = 10% Participation (lecture & lab) = 5% A Note About Participation & Attendance: Your participation grade is based on your active engagement in the classroom and laboratory. This means that you should be alert, ready to ask/answer questions, contributing to discussion, performing tasks/activities, etc. It does NOT mean that you are simply in attendance. However, you are expected to attend all lectures and labs and your class participation grade will be affected if you miss more than 2 lectures without a legitimate reason (illness, death in the family, collegesponsored event, etc.). In keeping with College policy, missing more than 25% of scheduled lectures will result in failure of the course. This applies regardless of other grades! (If you must miss a class, it is your responsibility to make sure you get any missed material or new assignments. Any assignments that are turned in late will be penalized.) NOTE: Attendance in lab is mandatory! Do not schedule other activities during lab time. Missed labs can only be made up if you have a valid excuse (illness requiring medical care, accident involving injury, death in the family, etc.) AND if you notify me before lab or as soon as physically possible. You are also expected to be ON TIME to all lectures and labs. Coming to class late is disruptive and disrespectful of others do not make it a habit. Excessive tardiness will be noted and will reduce your overall course grade accordingly. Grade Scale: Grades are based on a 10-point scale, with the upper and lower ends of each range reserved for + and grades: A ; A ; B ; B 82-87; B ; C ; C 72-77; C ; D ; D 60-67; F < 60 Scheduled Reviews & Lab Tests: You must be present for ALL scheduled lecture reviews and lab tests. These tests will be given in class/lab during scheduled meeting times on the dates specified on the following pages regarding lecture & lab topics. No make-up tests will be allowed except in cases of emergency and if I am notified in advance. (NOTE - Emergency refers to illness requiring medical care, accident involving injury or death in the family. Papers due, exams in other classes, social functions, sporting events, theatrical productions or similar events are NOT acceptable reasons for missing or postponing tests!) Note: I do not allow students to use "spots" (old tests) for studying. It is considered an Honor Code violation to use old tests from this course in your studies. I will provide enough information on my testing style and examples/study questions to make you feel comfortable with the types of questions that will be asked.

All of the information needed for the laboratory will be provided in lab handouts you will receive prior to each lab (or, in some cases, during lab). You should ALWAYS look over the lab handouts PRIOR to your scheduled lab period and BRING YOUR HANDOUT WITH YOU TO THE LAB if you received it in advance I will not have extra copies. You also do NOT need to purchase a special lab notebook but should keep all of your lab information together somehow so you can bring it with you to lab and have it for studying for lab tests. Learning this type of information requires time, effort, and a good study strategy. Coming to class prepared is a good start do the assigned reading so you are familiar with material. Take good notes during class and ask questions about material that is unclear. Go back over material after class rewrite notes in a more relevant format, fill in areas that are lacking (go back to the assigned reading to clarify points), answer study questions in the text, review lecture slides on Moodle. And make sure you start studying for tests early do not wait until a day or two before the test to start! You ll find these and other tips in the Biology Course Success Tips document posted

A Helpful Resource - Math & Science Center: The Math & Science Center (MSC) offers free assistance to students in all areas of math and science, with a focus on the introductory courses. Trained and highly qualified peers hold one-on-one and smallgroup tutoring sessions on a drop-in basis or by appointment, as well as timely recap sessions ahead of scheduled reviews. Emphasis is placed on thinking critically, understanding concepts, making connections, and communicating effectively, not just getting correct answers. In addition, students can start or join a study group and use the MSC as a group or individual study space. Located in the Center for Teaching & Learning (CTL) on the 1 st floor of the College Library, drop-in hours are Sunday through Thursday, 8-11 PM, and Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, 4-6 PM beginning Sunday, August 28.
