IGCSE Human Biology The IGCSE Human Biology course will teach you about the structure and functions of the human body and develop and appreciation of how the human organism maintains itself. Besides its importance if you are considering a career in medicine, you will also find learning human biology useful if you want to work in health, fitness, natural therapies or any related area. Overview Through the IGCSE Human Biology course, you will learn about the human body and how it maintains itself, and understand the relationships between humans and other animals, and the dependence on plants. You will also learn how humans can modify their environment and behaviour to produce healthy conditions for present and future populations. You will study human biology at all levels, from cells and tissues up to bones, muscles and joints and the internal organs and their functions. The IGCSE Human Biology course also takes a wider perspective and looks at the relationship of humans with their environment and biological resources. Through human biology study you will gain knowledge of facts and principles about human biology at the same time as developing experimental skills. Entry requirements You don't need any previous experience or qualifications to enrol in our IGCSE Human Biology course. That's because we believe in making home study - and a rewarding future - as accessible as possible. Career progression The study of biology is essential if you plan a career in medicine, but also for a number of other career options. Having an IGCSE Human Biology also tells a prospective employer you have the useful ability to think analytically and logically. The IGCSE Human Biology can also provide progression to GCE AS and Advanced GCE level, and other equivalent qualifications. Why choose ICS Learn? Online learning approach We provide you with unlimited tutor support, online course materials, learning activities and past papers. Expert tutor support Tutor contact by phone, and via the online Student Community. Your tutor provides you with academic support and answers any queries you may have regarding your course including its content and assessments. Flexibility Study when it suits you, progress as quickly as you want.
Support when you study with ICS Learn You will have online access to our Student Community where you will find useful study resources and you will be able to test your new skills through online activities. You will also be able to chat with other IGCSE Human Biology students on your course. Importantly, your Course Tutor will be keeping an eye on your progress during your IGCSE Human Biology programme. They will feedback on your assessments and be available to answer any queries you may have via , phone and via the Student Community. Our Student Services team are also here to answer any non-academic questions throughout your studies. Course content Our Law GCSE course prepares students for Edexcel IGCSE Human Biology syllabus (4HB0), for exams in 2014 and later years. Cells and Tissues You will learn about cells and cell structures, and understand cell division and the grouping of cells into organs and into tissues such as bone, muscle and blood. Biological Molecules You will learn about carbohydrates, proteins and fats and their structures. You will also learn about enzymes and the role they play in metabolic reactions. Movement of Substances Into and Out of Cells You will learn about diffusion, osmosis and active transport and understand the factors that affect the rate of movement. You will also carry out simple experiments into diffusion and osmosis using living and nonliving systems. Bones, Muscles and Joints You will be taught the main parts of the skeleton and the structure of a long bone. You will learn about the functions of the skeleton and of the different types of joints. You will also learn how muscles and bones together bring about movement. Coordination You will learn about the central nervous system and its component parts and functions. The brain will be described, as will the sense organs such as the eye and the ear. You will also be taught comparisons between the nervous and hormonal systems and the concept of negative feedback as an essential means of temperature control and endocrine secretion.
Nutrition and Energy You will learn about what constitutes a balanced diet and what factors may cause this to vary. The human digestive system will be described and you will learn how and why food is moved through the system and what processes take place at different stages. Respiration You will learn the function of respiration and the differences between aerobic and anaerobic respiration. You will carry out simple controlled experiments to demonstrate the production of carbon dioxide in respiration. Gas Exchange You will learn the physical organs and mechanisms of breathing and about the gas exchange between the air in the lungs and the blood in capillaries. The effects of smoking on the lungs and circulatory system will be explained, as well as the effects of exercise. Internal Transport You will learn about the circulatory system and the composition and functions of blood. The workings of the heart will be explained, along with the effects of exercise and the causes of heart attacks. You will learn about problems associated with blood transfusions and transplants. Homeostatic Mechanisms You will learn how the human body maintains a constant internal environment and about the structure and functions of sweat glands, skin, lungs and kidneys. You will also learn about the liver and its functions, and about the effect alcohol has on it. Reproduction and Heredity You will learn about the male and female reproductive systems and the process of fertilisation, embryo development and birth. The structure and role of chromosomes, DNA and genes will be explained. You will also learn how genetic make-up is expressed. Disease You will learn about the general course of a disease and of the means of infection, including viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites. You will also learn about immunity, vaccines and antibiotics. Non-pathogenic Organisms and their Importance You will learn about the role of non-pathogenic bacteria and fungi useful to humans in the decomposition of organic matter, and about the process of sewage treatment in a modern sewage works and in a pit latrine.
Environment You will learn about the relationship between humans and their environment and about the dependence on green plants for food and oxygen. As part of this you will learn about food chains and energy transfer and the importance of and problems with purification and storage of water. You will also learn about pollution, greenhouse gases and the effects of deforestation. Course code G62 Exam Information The exams for IGCSE Human Biology are during the January and May/June exam sessions each year ICS Learn provide all the learning support throughout your studies. We are a Learning Provider ; however we are not an examination centre. To gain your IGCSE Human Biology qualification, you will need to arrange to sit the examinations as a private candidate. Your course covers the content from the Edexcel IGCSE Human Biology syllabus (4HB0). What you need to do regarding your exams At least 6 months before your exam, you will need to take the following steps: Step 1: Find an exam centre Find a local Edexcel registered centre that will allow you to take the exams as a private or external candidate. This must be in the UK. Edexcel registered centres are usually schools and colleges within the UK that are already presenting internal candidates (please note that you cannot be entered as an internal and a private candidate at the same exam centre, during the same exam period). It is at the sole discretion of each centre whether they will accept private candidates or not. Usually the best approach is to contact a school or college in your local area, especially if you have a relationship such as being an ex pupil or it being your child's school, etc. The centre may be inclined to accept you, even if broadly, their policy is not to accept private candidates. An alternative would be to approach private tutorial colleges, private schools and faith schools, which are more flexible in terms of accepting private candidates. You can find out more information on the Examinations page of the ICS Learn website. Edexcel have a list of approved centres who may accept private candidates on their website.
If there are no schools or colleges showing in your area, you should still try contacting your local schools and colleges. If you have any sort of relationship or history with a school or college then try that one first. Not all centres will accept private candidates. Step 2: Provide the centre with syllabus information Once you have found a centre, they will need the following information from you: The syllabus you are sitting: Edexcel IGCSE Human Biology syllabus (4HB0). Step 3: Sitting your exams Sitting your exams: Once you have booked the examination and confirmed the syllabus details, speak to your tutor and let them know, so they can provide you with the right guidance for the syllabus you will be sitting the exams for. Assessment information The table below outlines the assessments for the Edexcel IGCSE Human Biology syllabus (4HB0). Number of papers Tier entry Weighting of papers Structure of papers Content of the papers Timing of papers IGCSE Physics (4PH0) Two Written papers The examination is untiered, so question papers are designed to be accessible to candidates of all abilities. 6 Examinations fees The costs of your examinations are not included in your course fees. Examination fees will vary, with private schools and colleges being more expensive than your local state schools, but you should be aware that examination fees could be in the region of per paper. Course fees Please see our website for current prices. You can either pay for your course in full or speak to our course advisors about our monthly payment plans.
