The Writing Process You Can Do It One Step at a Time MISSION IM POSSIBLE Name Teacher Project Be the change you wish to see in the world. Ghandi

Checklist Are You Ready to Start Writing??? Organization: Have you come up with a Primary Question and a Working Thesis/argument you are going to prove? Have they been approved by your teacher? Have you sectioned off your paper into 3-5 subtopics that supports the argument you are proving in your paper? Research: Have you found at minimum FIVE sources Have you written corresponding bibliography cards for EVERY source you have gotten information from? Are ALL of your sources valid? In other words: Is there a valid publisher? (Not an editorial or review, but an actual article written by someone who knows what they are talking about Remember the library Database has articles that are already approved!) Has it been published within a reasonable time frame? The sources say something Real about your topic/subtopic it actually contributes to your argument and can be used in your paper? (If not the source will not work and you need to find something new.) Findings: Do you have sufficient facts and basic information (probably at least 10 note cards per subtopic at a minimum!)? Do you feel you fully understand your argument, counter argument, and all the basics behind your topic? In other words, could you, without any problem, fully explain to someone in a conversation about your topic, and about your argument using facts and valid points not simply your own opinion? ***** THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART!!! Do you have CITATIONS noted from your sources? Actual cited sentences or comments made by researchers and informed people that contribute to the argument you are making As Well As each of your subtopics? (***Recommendation have AT MINIMUM 3-4 GOOD citations per subtopic!) Have you divided your notes, facts and citations into your subtopic envelopes? ***If you can check off each of these truthfully, you should be ready to start writing your paper. Your next step, since you have all the information and already know what you want to say and which citations and notes you will use to say it is to make your outline.*** Write Your Paper

DONE RESEARCHING? LET S WRITE! 1. FIRST - Create your outline built around your citations and notes (you may 1. Intro use the one below OR your own, but you MUST have a detailed outline.) HINT: Though outlines seem time consuming, once you have everything drafted out writing the paper is 100 times easier, you will NEVER get stuck in not knowing what to write next! REMEMBER: Subtopics are NOT Single Paragraphs they will likely be several paragraphs. Approved A. Opening Sentence: B. Transition C. Thesis (or the Argument for whole paper): 2. 1 st Subtopic : BACKGROUND OF HOLOCAUST 3. 2 nd Subtopic: 4. 3 rd Subtopic: 5. 4 th Subtopic: PERSPECTIVE

SAMPLE SUBTOPIC OUTLINE Topic: Homelessness; Thesis/Argument: By looking at the rising rates of homelessness in the USA, one can see that more must be done to alleviate (heal/fix) this poverty & it is everyone s responsibility to work towards this end st Subtopic: Root Causes of Homelessness A. Introduce 1 st Subtopic Basic Info Statistics of homeless people Why important It is not just drunks and bums; can happen to anyone How it relates to thesis in order to end homelessness, people must first understand where it begins and that it is rarely a person s fault that they are homeless, and even if bad decisions led to homelessness, they still deserve a chance. B. Point One The economy Example: Statistics and facts supporting struggling Americans who have lost jobs in the 9.8% unemployment times Citation?: Times article citation 2 on former CEO working at McDonald s Example: Rising cost of living, Pay cuts, fewer jobs C. Point Two - Runaways Example: statistics of how many runaways contribute to the high numbers of homelessness Citation?: citation 1 from article 3 Example: Why do teens choose street life over home; how does this turn into a cycle of poverty? D. Conclusion Life Circumstances Briefly Summarize main points: Every person on the street has their own story that has brought them to the unfortunate place they are in today Final Explanation of this subtopic (Be sure you have connected all of this to your thesis statement)

WHEN USING CITATIONS: Remember to use PIE! P Prepare Introduce to your reader that a citation is coming, but do it subtly: Mr. So and So once said,. (Sonso 44). NOT A citation that proves this idea is from so and so: (Sonso 44). I Insert Insert the citation. If you are going to use the citation word for word, you Must use quotation marks at the beginning and end, then in parenthesis put the author and page number the citation was found on, finally end with a period OUTSIDE the parenthesis. E Explain Citations should develop your paper, not simply be add-ons or after thoughts. Don t just stick them in your paper and not discuss it; explain the citation after it is inserted, weave it into your paper so its relevancy is seen. TO PARAPHRASE: Paraphrasing is similar to quotations in that you MUST still give credit to the author, but you rewrite it in your own words. A paraphrase: ~Includes all the points from the original statement ~Communicates ideas in other words-for example, to make them clearer than the original. IE: We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men and women are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness (Jefferson). BECOMES: Thomas Jefferson reminds us in the Declaration that not only are all people equal to each other, no matter what their race, age, sex, background, etc is, but also that they have the right, a right that cannot be taken away by Any other person, to pursue their own life, and enjoy freedom, and to go after what they want, love and desire out of their own life. It is their right. Hint: You MUST have at least 5 citations in your paper, properly cited using PIE technique. You May use more citations, but try to avoid having more than two per page. Your own thoughts must be put into the paper, not just others. The Pen is Mightier than the Sword!
