Rock the Universe 2015 Bible Study #2 by Christa Kinde LEADER S GUIDE Inspired by the song: This Is Our Time Ar2st: Planetshakers The Theme: We were made to praise God. Scripture: Acts 14:8 17; Psalm 33:1 4 The Point It s fiung for God s people to sing his praises. Our hearts come alive when we do.
The Warm Up Prepare a slide or poster with two columns of color words. Change the text color for each word, making sure they don t match. For example, the word GREEN might be printed in pink, and the word BLUE might be printed in orange. Divide the class in half, and give them separate instruc\ons. Have one group simply read the words. But ask the second group to list off the colors in which the words are wri_en. (Alternately, you do this one yourself.) Then have the two groups read the columns. Watch for signs of confusion. Is there disagreement on who s doing it right? Transi2on to The Main Event by asking: How can two groups of people see the exact same thing yet interpret it in two en\rely different ways?
The Main Event Ask a student to read Acts 14: In Lystra there sat a man crippled in his feet, who was lame from birth and had never walked. 9 He listened to Paul as he was speaking. Paul looked directly at him, saw that he had faith to be healed 10 and called out, Stand up on your feet! At that, the man jumped up and began to walk. 11 When the crowd saw what Paul had done, they shouted in the Lycaonian language, The gods have come down to us in human form! 12 Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul they called Hermes because he was the chief speaker. 13 The priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the city, brought bulls and wreaths to the city gates because he and the crowd wanted to offer sacrifices to them. 14 But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of this, they tore their clothes and rushed out into the crowd, shou\ng: 15 Men, why are you doing this? We too are only men, human like you. We are bringing you good news, telling you to turn from these worthless things to the living God, who made heaven and earth and sea and everything in them. 16 In the past, he let all na\ons go their own way. 17 Yet he has not lej himself without tes\mony: He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons; he provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy.
The Main Event 1. Upon seeing the miraculous healing of the lame man, the crowd shouted, The gods have come down to us in human form! How close were they to the truth? They assumed Paul and Barnabas were Hermes and Zeus even though they were only men, human like you. In one sense, they were way off the mark. But their assumpbon must have made it easier for Paul to tell them about Jesus, the Son of God who came to earth as a human. 2. Ajer that, the people of Lystra tried to worship Paul and Barnabas. In Acts 14:15 17, what tes\mony did Paul use to set them straight? He spoke about the living God, who made heaven and earth and sea and everything in them (verse 15). Making reference to the natural world, he used them to point to their Maker. He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their season (verse 17). Share Psalm 19:1 with your students: The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
The Main Event 3. How would you have felt as a Chris\an, being mistaken for a god? The misunderstanding had to be beyond awkward, but it created an opportunity for the people of Lystra to turn to the one true God. This is the invita\on God has been making for hundreds and thousands of years. What are the instruc\ons in Deuteronomy 30:10? Obey the LORD your God and keep his commands and decrees that are wriuen in this Book of the Law and turn to the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul (Deuteronomy 30:10). Obey. Keep. And turn to the Lord. Not half- heartedly or temporarily, but with all your heart and all your soul. You may also wish to share Psalm 119:36 with your students: Turn my heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain.
The Main Event 4. Nature declares God s awesomeness. The whole earth shouts. It sings. According to Psalm 66:1 4, what is crea\on saying? Shout with joy to God, all the earth! Sing the glory of his name; make his praise glorious! Say to God, How awesome are your deeds! So great is your power that your enemies cringe before you. All the earth bows down to you; they sing praise to you, they sing praise to your name (Psalm 66:1 4). Remind your students that Jesus said that if we don t declare God s praises, the stones would immediately cry out (Luke 19:40). The Lord must be praised, and this is our \me to do so! Believers live in the same world as everyone else, yet we see things differently. We see evidence of God s love and mercy all around. And we thank him with songs, prayers, and our very way of life. Others may look at us and shake their heads, thinking we re crazy or confused, but we ll never stop loving him.
The Wrap Up Have students look at The Wrap Up sec\on of their Student Guide. During this \me, play the song This Is Our Time by Planetshakers. Read Psalm 33:1 4 1 Sing joyfully to the LORD, you righteous; it is fiung for the upright to praise him. 2 Praise the LORD with the harp; make music to him on the ten- stringed lyre. 3 Sing to him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy. 4 For the word of the LORD is right and true; he is faithful in all he does. The Planetshakers boldly declare, This is our \me, this is our place, this is our moment to lij up God s name. What do these verses in psalms say about praising God? Psalm 18:49 Therefore I will praise you among the nabons, O LORD; I will sing praises to your name. Our tesbmony can reach beyond borders. Psalm 104:33 I will sing to the LORD all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live. Lifelong worship will stretch right on into eternity. Psalm 147:1 Praise the LORD. How good it is to sing praises to our God, how pleasant and fibng to praise him! What makes praise pleasant? What makes it fibng?
The Wrap Up In the King James Version, Psalm 22:3 says that God inhabits the praises of his people. Another version says that he s enthroned in our praises. What do you think David meant? What do you think the Planetshakers mean when they say, Our hearts will come alive as we declare your praises? Praise honors God. Worship is an expression of respect and love that sets him in his righgul place. He s higher than us holy, perfect, powerful. We are his creabon and his children. And we are most alive when we re doing the thing we were meant to do. Praise him.
The Wrap Up The whole universe honors its Maker, and so do we. But what good is singing? Can it accomplish anything? Worship isn t wasted. It s an offering that pleases God. See if your students can list some pracbcal aspects as well. Songs are easy to remember. Catchy tunes bring truths back to mind. Songs can be heard and overheard, reaching needy hearts in unexpected places. Lyrics can instruct and encourage (Colossians 3:16). Some are simply the overflow of a happy heart (James 5:13). Ask students to share their thoughts with the group if they d like. Ask a student to close in prayer.
