4 The GFSI Mission Provide continuous improvement in food safety management systems to ensure confidence in the delivery of safe food to consumers worldwide What is GFSI? The Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) is a non-profit making foundation, created under Belgian law in May The daily management of GFSI is undertaken by The Consumer Goods Forum. What does the GFSI do? GFSI benchmarks existing food standards against food safety criteria, and also looks to develop mechanisms to exchange information in the supply chain, to raise consumer awareness and to review existing good retail practices

5 The Objectives of GFSI Reduce food safety risks by delivering equivalence and convergence between effective food safety management systems Manage cost in the global food system by eliminating redundancy and improving operational efficiency Develop competencies and capacity building in food safety to create consistent and effective global food systems Provide a unique international stakeholder platform for collaboration, knowledge exchange and networking

6 The approach accepted by the members of the agreement is: once certified, accepted everywhere The agreement is to reduce duplication in the supply chain through the common acceptance of any of the four GFSI benchmarked schemes, many other food service, retail and manufacturing companies

7 What is the Benchmarking? a procedure by which a food safety-related scheme is compared to the GFSI Guidance Document the process is intended to be executed in an independent, unbiased, technically proficient and transparent manner the benchmarked schemes cannot be considered as equal
