6 BI0 - COMPOSTING PARK Bio-Composting Fine Points / / / / / / / / / Prepare the bed with graded stone jelly and sand Spread the bio-degradable waste in layers Spray cowdung silurry or panchagavya or Effective Micro-organism (EM) solution Sprinkle water and turn down the waste periodically upto 3 to 4 weeks The waste is now predigested It could be either transferred to vermi composting unit for post digestion Or else can be continued in the same cubicle for post digestion and maturation Cover the waste with cowdung slurry for post digestion for about 4 to 6 weeks Harvest the compost, dry, sieve and package it for marketing Striving for a holistic approach to environmental protection... 76
7 VERMI COMPOSTING The earthworns during the process of vermi composting maintain aerobic conditions in the organic wastes by proper mixing and microbial decomposition of the substrate in the intestine of earthworns, converts the waste into worm biomass and excretion of casts known as Vermi Compost. Tips for Vermi Composting Process Prepare the vermibed (Graded jelly/sand/garden soil) Prepare above a bed of precured cowdung Place the mother worm in the culture bed Cover with dry banana leaves / other browns Sprinkle water gently upto 4 weeks for breeding Collect vermi wash and vermi castings Fully grown earth worms get multiplied in 4 weeks Dump the predigested waste in layers Apply cowding slury or panchagavya or EM Solution Continue to spread untill filled up Spray water gently Vermi soldiers digest waste in 4 to 5 weeks Harvest the vermi compost Vermi composting, a panacea for Solid Waste Management... 77
8 EARTH WORM, THE SOUL OF VERMI COMPOSTING Biodegradable solid waste is highly organic in nature, so vermicomposting has become an oppropriate alternative for the safe, hygienic and cost effective conversion of waste in to value Earthworms feed on waste organic and convert into casting (ejected matter) rich in plant nutrients. The action of Earthworms during vermi composting is both physical and biochemical. The commoner epigeic (surface dwelling). Species Eudrilus euginae, (African night crawler) Parionyx excavatus and Eisenia fetida are being used for vermicomposting. The mixed culture of all the three can also be sucessfully used. Earthworms, the bio-technologist to turn waste into value... 78
