3 Plumpton College Plumpton College is a land-based College established in The College is situated at the foot of the beautiful South Downs in East Sussex, near the historic town of Lewes and the coastal city of Brighton. Plumpton College also has centres in Flimwell, Netherfield (Battle) and Stanmer (Brighton). Why Choose Plumpton College? We offer a full range of Land Based Apprenticeships. Staff with knowledge and industry experience. The College is set within the South Downs National Park with excellent facilities. We provide support throughout your apprenticeship and assessors will come to your workplace and review your progress; you will also come into College as a part of day or block release programmes. We are one of the leading land based Colleges in the South East. Feedback from our apprentices is that they enjoy their course and are successful in progressing their careers. Come and join us! 4 Apprenticeships What is an Apprenticeship? Apprenticeships are qualifications delivered whilst working in industry. This means that you are learning the skills needed for your profession and earning a wage at the same time. What is an Apprenticeship? In addition to your job you will attend College, usually for one day a week. The apprenticeship programme usually lasts between 12 and 24 months depending on the structure of the qualification. All apprenticeship qualifications are nationally recognised. A Successful Apprentice achieves: A Work Based Diploma at Level 2 or Level 3. Functional Skills in English, maths and in some disciplines ICT Employment Rights and Responsibilities Personal Learning and Thinking Skills Additional Technical Certificates are required in Horse Care and Floristry. Types of Apprenticeships: Intermediate Apprenticeship- Aimed at anyone new to the Industry or existing members of staff looking to gain a recognised qualification Advanced Apprenticeship- Usually for those with supervisory responsibilities. Course fees from Sept 2014* No charge - fully funded by the government co-funded (this should be paid by your employer) Vet Nurses 850 per year Graduates/holders of Level 4 Qualification no funding available, (Vet Nurses 1700 per year) *fees subject to change 2
5 Entry Requirements You must be in full time employment for a minimum of 30 hours per week. As part of the apprenticeship, you must have the opportunity to attend College during work hours as part of paid employment. Minimum Apprenticeship wage is 3.30 an hour, for year olds and those over 19 in their first apprenticeship year. If you are over 19, in subsequent years you should receive the National Minimum Wage for your age group. You preferably will have achieved GCSE A-E or an equivalent*. We may take into consideration any previous industry experience. Everyone will have a interview with a initial assessment which will help us to see that you are working at the right level and identify any support that you might need. * please note that this differs for vet nurses. 6 Soundbites Name: Kallum Cornwell Course: Intermediate Apprenticeship in Horticulture and Intermediate Apprenticeship in Environmental Conservation I first did the Intermediate Apprenticeship in Horticulture and have now progressed on to the Intermediate Apprenticeship in Environmental Conservation. I found my Apprenticeship a fun way to gain good experience in the work place whilst gaining a qualification at the same time. The Apprenticeship has really helped with my confidence and teamwork skills. 4
7 Soundbites Name: Charlene Carr Course: Intermediate and Advanced Apprenticeship in Horse Care Completing both the level 2 and 3 gave me a really good grounding to get started working with horses, and to progress to now running a large yard. During my time at Plumpton I always felt supported and encouraged to push yourself to improve. 5
8 Agriculture 6
9 Intermediate and Advanced Agriculture Apprenticeship The aim of the agricultural industry is to produce food to feed both people and animals. This requires a highly efficient skilled workforce. A career in agriculture can be very varied. You could work on a farm that specialises in growing crops, one that specialises in livestock and Dairy Production or a mixed farm which includes aspects of both. Agricultural education is at the heart of Plumpton s activities. The College farm and wider estate are used extensively to deliver the apprenticeship programme. Pathways: Crop Production Livestock Production (including Dairy) Mixed Farming Duration:18 months - Intermediate 24 Months - Intermediate Dairy 22 months - Advanced Agriculture Times: Entry Requirements: See page 3 7

11 Intermediate and Advanced Animal Care Apprenticeship Animal Care involves looking after animals and caring for their welfare. This can be a varied job role, working with many different animals in various settings such as kennels, catteries, rescue centres and zoos. It requires a very dedicated person who enjoys handling a wide variety of animals. The College has a modern Animal Care unit which houses a huge variety of mammals, reptiles, amphibian, birds and fish. The unit provides animal care apprentices with valuable practical experience in handling and husbandry skills. Pathways: Animal Welfare Dog Grooming - Available from September 2016 Duration: 18 months - Intermediate 24 months - Advanced Times: Entry Requirements: See page 3 Animal Care 9
12 Butchery Butchery 10
13 Intermediate Butchery Apprenticeship The Butchery programme is taken from the Food and Drink Apprenticeship. The programme is designed for those who wish to gain practical experience in Butchery Skills, including processing meat and poultry, along with cutting meats using unique cutting techniques for different types of meat. The training will take place off site in Robertsbridge. Apprentices attend on a day in the first week of the month. The day can vary as the team like to fit in a field trip. The Apprentice will be visited in the work place where delivery will take place once a month. Pathway: Meat and Poultry Duration: 18 months Times: Entry Requirements: See page 3 Butchery 11

15 Intermediate and Advanced Floristry Apprenticeship Floristry involves designing, creating, retailing and delivering floral displays. This programme will equip you with a wide range of floristry skills, such as display, wedding floristry and plant care. There is a wide choice of job opportunities as a florist working in a shop, freelance florist, event designer and teaching others. Duration: 18 months - Intermediate 24 months - Advanced Times: Entry Requirements: See page 3 Floristry 17

17 Intermediate and Advanced Horse Care Apprenticeship The equine industry is one of the biggest rural sectors in the UK. Many people own or ride horses; this provides many job opportunities such as groom, breeder, assistant yard manager and instructor. On this course you will learn the different aspects of looking after horses, so you will need to have a love for horses and care for their welfare. At the College there are excellent facilities to assist you with your apprenticeship. These include two large indoor schools with galleries, a 30m x 60m outdoor ménage, stabling for over 40 horses, grazing, a horse walker, show-jump fields and a cross-country course. The stabling consists of a traditional court yard plus American Barn stabling. Duration: 18 months - Intermediate 24 months - Advanced Times: Horse Care Entry Requirements: See page 3 19

19 Intermediate and Advanced Horticulture Apprenticeship This course aims to expand your knowledge of basic Horticultural skills. After starting your course with your core units, you will have the opportunity to specialise in the pathway depending on your workplace - which can be as diverse as a garden centre, sports club, golf club, vineyard or landscaping company. Pathways: Horticulture Production Horticulture (including vineyard) Landscaping Sports Turf Greenkeeper Sports Turf Groundsman Parks, Gardens and Green Spaces Duration: 20 months - Intermediate 24 months - Advanced Times: Entry Requirements: See page 3 Horticulture 21

21 Intermediate and Advanced Land Based Service Engineering Apprenticeship This Apprenticeship enables you to learn the maintenance and repair of a range of mechanised equipment used in agriculture, ground care and other land-based industries. It is intended for those employed full time in the land and engineering industry, who would like to increase their skills and knowledge of land based engineering. Pathways: Agriculture Machinery Groundcare Machinery Duration: 24 months - Intermediate 15 months - Advanced Times: Entry Requirements: See Page 3 Land Based Service Engineering 23
22 Veterinary Nursing 26
23 Advanced Veterinary Nursing Apprenticeship Veterinary Nurses work alongside Veterinary Surgeons within a veterinary surgery, animal hospital or animal welfare centre. Veterinary Nurses focus on the health and treatment of an animal. It is important that you have genuine interest in animals and their welfare. Entry Requirements: 5 GCSE s at Grade C or above in English, Maths and Science plus two other subjects, or equivalent. It is also a requirement that you have at least 6 months experience in a Veterinary Practice. Pathways: Small Animals Equine Intake: Sept (Small Animal & Equine) Jan (Small Animal) Duration: 3 years Veterinary Nursing 27
24 Finding Work If you are not already employed in the industry that you wish to train in, you will need to find an employer. These can also be online agencies. Newspapers Check out job opportunities in local newspapers. Magazines trade & special interest These often have vacancies and careers supplements for particular industries. The Internet Many companies advertise vacancies on their websites and recruitment websites. People you know Let friends, relatives and people you have previously worked for know that you are looking for work.
