4 Apprenticeships APPRENTICESHIPS ENABLE YOU TO ENTER OR STAY IN THE WORLD OF WORK, EARN A WAGE AND LEARN NEW SKILLS. APPRENTICES LEARN ON THE JOB, BUILD UP KNOWLEDGE AND PROFESSIONAL SKILLS AND GAIN RECOGNISED QUALIFICATIONS. WORKING WITH LEADING EMPLOYERS Our Apprenticeship team currently works with over 300 employers and 450 apprentices in the local area. The team will work to match your career aspirations with the needs of local employers. As an apprentice you will be employed with a contract of employment, so your employer will pay your wages, give you holidays, provide on the job training and allow you to complete your studies during the working week. ENTRY REQUIREMENTS There are no fixed entry qualification requirements for most Apprenticeships. For more technical Apprenticeships you need GCSE grades A*- C in Maths, English and ICT. HOW LONG DO APPRENTICESHIPS TAKE? Apprenticeships are usually completed in 2 years, depending on the area of study, your ability and the requirements of your employer. WHAT QUALIFICATION WILL I WORK TOWARDS? Most of the training is delivered in the workplace, so you will learn the skills you need to excel in your job, giving you a real advantage. Your Apprenticeship will consist of several parts: A knowledge qualification (what you learn by studying) A competence qualification (what you learn in work) Functional Skills (Maths/English/ICT) Other sector/employer specific qualifications Apprentices have excellent progression opportunities, whether looking to study further or climb the ranks within the workplace. Many successful careers start with an Apprenticeship. On completion 90% of apprentices stay in employment with 71% staying with the same employer* * (Oct 2015) With the introduction of higher Apprenticeships, you can now progress your career to degree level and beyond. 03

7 Working With You Parents & Carers For young people moving into the world of work can be an exciting but challenging time. Here at Carlisle College we have all the support needed to make sure that transition is successful. An Apprentice with Carlisle College has full access to all our support services: Carlisle College provides a safe and supportive environment in which everyone is able to study and work to the best of their ability. Apprentices will meet regularly with their Reviewer who can offer support on any issues that affect their Apprenticeship experience We also help Apprentices to progress to the next stage of their career State of the art workshop training rooms, LRC and Student Services All Apprentices continue to develop their Maths, English and IT skills, enhancing future prospects As well as extensive support within College, Apprentices have a work - based mentor and regular visits from College staff. 06

8 Accountancy Intermediate/Advanced What does an Accountancy Apprentice do? As an accountancy apprentice, you will be involved in processing and paying invoices, monthly accounts, tax, VAT returns, national insurance contribution, company expenses and computerised accounting systems. Intermediate (L2) Apprenticeship The programme is made up of three AAT foundation Certificate in Accounting. Maths (Functional Skills) Level 1. (ERR). Intermediate (L2): 1 year Advanced (L3): 1 year Advanced (L3) Apprenticeship The programme is made up of three AAT intermediate Certificate in Accounting. Maths (Functional Skills) Level 2. (ERR). Level 2 Certificate in Accounting. What will I study as an Accountancy Apprentice? During your studies you will study Basic costing, computerised accounting, working effectively in accounting and finance, processing book-keeping transactions, control accounts journals and banking systems. At level 3 you will study accounts preparation, preparing final accounts for sole traders, cost and revenue, professional ethics, indirect tax and spreadsheet software. Level 3 Diploma in Accounting. You will attend College one day a week during the course of your programme. Cashier, Credit Control Clerk, Assistant Accountant, Trainee Accounting Technician. 16K - 25K. 07

9 Business Administration Intermediate/Advanced What does a Business Administration Apprentice do? As a business administration apprentice, you will handle the day-to-day tasks in an office and ensure it runs smoothly. This type of work requires a strong sense of responsibility, accuracy and attention to detail. Your exact duties will depend on your employer but could include: typing up board meeting minutes, consolidating spread sheets, dealing with daily mail, s and organising events. Intermediate (L2) Apprenticeship A combination of knowledge & practical units to meet companies requirements (ERR) Transferable Skills in English, Mathematics and ICT (Functional Skills) Level 1 Personal learning and thinking skills Level 2 Diploma in Business and Administration. What will I study as a Business Administration Apprentice? Communication in a business environment, Understand employer organisations, Manage personal performance and development, Principles of providing administrative services, Principles of business communication and information, Principles of business, Principles of administration. Intermediate (L2): 1 ½ years Advanced (L3): 1 ½ years Advanced (L3) Apprenticeship Competence qualification Knowledge qualification Mathematics and ICT (Functional Skills) Level 2 (ERR) Level 3 Diploma in Business and Administration. You will attend College one day a week during the course of your programme. This will cover Functional Skills, technical content and identified topics from the Skills for Business Menu (see P.26) Provide administrative support in a law firm, school, building supplier, etc. 12K - 40K. 08

11 Bricklaying Intermediate/Advanced What does a Bricklaying Apprentice do? A Bricklayer is responsible for laying bricks, pre-cut stone, concrete blocks and other types of building blocks in mortar to construct and repair walls, foundations, partitions, arches and other structures. Intermediate (L2) Apprenticeship Knowledge units NVQ units Maths (Functional Skills) Level 1 (ERR) Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Trowel Occupations and Level 2 Diploma in Bricklaying. What will I study as a Bricklayer Apprentice? Preparing mortar, laying bricks and blocks, decorative brickwork, safe working practice and building masonry structures. You will attend College one day a week during the course of your programme to develop your brickwork & construction knowledge. You will also improve your tool & practical skills. At work you will have a mentor and be visited for reviews and observations by your College based co-ordinator. Intermediate (L2): 2 years Advanced (L3): 1 ½ years Advanced (L3) Apprenticeship Knowledge units NVQ units Mathematics (Functional Skills) Level 2 (ERR) Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Trowel Occupations and Level 3 Diploma in Bricklaying. Bricklayer, Foundation & Block Work Technician, Specialist trades including: restoration and related areas Once qualified and experienced many bricklayers become self-employed with enhanced earning potential 16K - 23K 10

12 Customer Service Intermediate/Advanced What does a Customer Service Apprentice do? As a customer service apprentice, you ll need clear and up-to-date knowledge of your organisation s products and services and be able to communicate within a professional environment. Duties will vary between sectors, but in most cases you ll be offering advice, answering questions or handling complaints. Intermediate (L2) Apprenticeship Knowledge & competence units Mathematics (Functional Skills) Level 1 (ERR). Personal learning & thinking skills. L2 Diploma in Customer Service. What will I study as a Customer Service Apprentice? How to deliver customer service Understand customers Principles of customer service Understand employer organisations Manage personal performance and development. Resolve customer complaints Intermediate (L2): 1 ½ years Advanced (L3): 1 ½ years Advanced (L3) Apprenticeship Knowledge & competence units Mathematics (Functional Skills) Level 2 (ERR). Personal learning & thinking skills. L3 Diploma in Customer Service. You will attend College one day a week during the course of your programme. 13 Dental Nurse Advanced What does a Dental Nurse Apprentice do? As a dental nurse apprentice your duties will assist the operator in sterilization of equipment, preparing materials and making fillings. At a general dental practice you may also help at the reception area where you will be involved in making appointments and maintaining client records. Advanced (L3) Apprenticeship Knowledge and competence units Mathematics (Functional Skills) Level 2 (ERR) Level 3 Award in Employment & Personal Learning Skills in Health. What will I study as a Dental Nurse Apprentice? First Aid, Health and safety, clinical and dental procedures, principles of infection control, production of dental images, prevention of periodontal disease and cavities, prostheses, non surgical endodontic treatment, support during extraction, protection of oral health. Using research skills to solve problems, manage own learning and participation through a team leader. Advanced (L3): 2 years L3 Diploma in Dental Nursing You will attend College one evening a week during the course of your programme. Progression Upskill in further areas within Dentistry. Dental Nurse, Dental Hygiene/Therapy, Radiography, Oral Health and Practice Management 12K - 28K. 12

14 Equestrian Intermediate/Advanced What does an Equestrian Apprentice do? Training focuses on general horse care with optional pathways of riding, breeding and coaching depending on preference and place of employment. You will learn how to take care of horses and maintain high welfare standards. Intermediate (L2) Apprenticeship Equine apprenticeships are tailored to meet the individual learners requirements Level 2 City & Guilds Horse Care Work-Based Diploma/ BHS Stages 1&2/ EQL Level 2 Level 2 Award in Business for the Equine industry Personal Learning and Thinking Skills Record of Achievement Maths and English Functional Skills Level 1 What will I study as an Equestrian Apprentice? Core units cover general horse care, stable and yard maintenance, working relationships and health and safety. Optional units cover a variety of subject areas including rehabilitation, care of performance horses, trekking, breeding, coaching, riding on the flat, in the open and over fences. Intermediate (L2): 1 ½ years Advanced (L3): 1 ½ years Advanced (L3) Apprenticeship The advanced programme is suitable for grooms, assistant yard managers and assistant trek leaders aiming to become instructors/ coaches, yard managers or specialist grooms Level 3 City & Guilds Horse Care Work-Based Diploma/ BHS Stages 3/ EQL Level 3 Level 3 Award in Business for the Equine industry Personal Learning and Thinking Skills Record of Achievement Maths and English Functional Skills Level 2 Training is predominantly in the workplace with additional monthly training and assessment sessions at approved locations Groom, Stud Groom, (Assistant) Trek Leader, Yard Manager, (Trainee) Instructor, Professional Rider and/or Coach 12K - 30K. 13

15 Electrical Installer Advanced What does an Electrical Installer Apprentice do? An electrical installer may work on a variety of domestic, commercial and industrial projects and will be responsible for installing or repairing electrical wiring and equipment in people s homes and business. They can also maintain electrical equipment and machinery. Advanced (L3) Apprenticeship Knowledge units covered at College NVQ units trained and assessed at work End - Point Assessment test Transferable Skills in English, Mathematics and ICT (Functional Skills) Level 2. What will I study as an Electrical Installer Apprentice? Health and safety/environmental considerations, overseeing and organising the working environment, Design, preparation and installation, Connecting legislation and practices, Inspection, testing and commissioning, Fault finding and rectification. Advanced (L3): 3 ½ - 4 years City and Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installation You will attend College one day a week for 3 years during the course of your programme. Electrician, Electrical Maintenance Technician 20K - 25K as a newly qualified electrician. Experienced, specialist and Self-Employed Electricians can earn in excess of 32K 14

16 Engineering Advanced What does an Engineering Apprentice do? Engineering technicians work on projects with other engineering craftspeople and technicians under the supervision of an engineer. They cover a variety of skill areas, including: welding, hydraulics, pneumatics, fluid mechanics, computer aided design (CAD), computer numerical controlled (CNC) machining, and measurement and inspection. Increasingly, they need a broad knowledge of other disciplines such as electronics and electrical engineering. Advanced (L3) Apprenticeship The programme is made up of five NVQ L3 in and Engineering Discipline BTEC L3 in and Engineering Discipline Functional Skills L2 (Maths, English and ICT) Personal Learning and Thinking Skills Employment Responsibilities and Rights. What will I study as an Engineering Apprentice? Topics and Qualifications depend upon the apprenticeship being studied. Advanced (L3): 3-4 years NVQ L3 in an Engineering Discipline BTEC L3 in an Engineering Discipline Functional Skills L2 Maths, English and ICT The training will be divided between College days and work based days. The ratio will be determined by the type of qualification you are studying. Design using Computer Aided Design (CAD) Software, Construction, Installation and Operation of Fabricating Components, Repair & Maintenance and Technicians Final year Apprentices can earn up to 25K. Manufacturing Engineers may earn around 40K with Senior Engineers earning between 40K and 55K a year and Chartered Engineers on average earning around 65K per year. 15

17 Food & Drink Industry Intermediate/Advanced What does a Food & Drink Industry Apprentice do? Engineering Maintenance - Installing, commisioning and fault finding on production machinery and systems. Manufacturing Operator - first line maintenance, ensuring production meets customer requirements & efficiency targets. Intermediate (L2) Apprenticeship Knowledge units NVQ units Maths (Functional Skills) Level 1 (ERR) Engineering Maintenance Level 2 Certificate in Food Safety in Manufacturing Training in Food Technology Manufacturing Operations Level Certificate 2 Process Operations Qualification in Food & Drink Level 1 in Maths & English Maintenance Engineer, Production Planner, Food Technologist Software & Design Engineer Intermediate (L2): 1 year Advanced (L3): 3 ½ years Advanced (L3) Apprenticeship Knowledge units NVQ units Mathematics (Functional Skills) Level 2 (ERR) Engineering Maintenance Level 3 Diploma in Food Safety in Manufacturing Training in Food Technology Manufacturing Operations Level Certificate 2 Process Operations Qualification in Food & Drink Level 1 in Maths & English You will attend College for specialist training in all aspects of the Food & Drink industry. 27K - 40K 16

18 Health & Social Care Intermediate/Advanced What does a Health & Social Care Apprentice do? Social Care Apprentice - you will be working with a wide range of service users including the elderly, people with learning disabilities and the disabled. You will be working in either a care home or in the service user s home. Health Care Apprentice - you will be working in a hospital, clinic or hospice providing similar services whilst also assisting with clinical procedures. The qualifications as an Apprentice are: Level 2/3 Diploma in Health & Social Care Level 2/3 Certificate in Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care Employment Responsibilities and Rights Functional Skills Level 1/2 Maths and English Intermediate (L2): 1 ½ years Advanced (L3): 2 years During your Apprenticeship you will attend College for up to one day a week. At work you will have a mentor and a College based training advisor that will plan, review and assess your skills development. Intermediate Apprentice s roles include: Support Worker Home care Support Worker Mental Health Support Worker Care Assistant/Worker Advanced Apprentice s roles move from supporting to supervising and managing the care provisions. Roles include: Senior Care Assistant Care Supervisor/Officer Community Support Worker Senior Healthcare Assistant Care workers earn around 12,500 per year as a starting salary. Once qualified or working at senior level you could earn 18,000-21,000 per year. 17

20 IT, Software, Web and Telecoms Advanced/Higher What does an IT, Software, Web and Telecoms Apprentice do? Careers in IT, Software, Web and Telecoms are about designing, installing and commissioning, fault finding and improving these systems You will attend college one day a week to access our specialist IT labs and you will be mentored at work with one of our training advisors guiding and assessing you towards your achievement. What does an IT Professional do? You will identify system faults, fix equipment, software and peripherals. You will set up new equipment and train clients in new systems, software and hardware. IT Technical Support, Software Developer, Web Developer, Telecoms Engineer, Network Planner and Programmer Advanced (L3): 1-2 years Higher (L4): 2-3 years ; Advanced You will achieve 2 vocational qualifications; Level 3 Diploma Professional Competence (assessed at work) Level 3 Edexcel Diploma in IT (college based) You will also develop your Maths, English and transferable skills during your college course. Higher Apprenticeship This programme is at Foundation Degree Level, you will achieve; Level 4 Diploma in Professional Competence for IT & Telecoms Professionals UCLAN FdSc Computing Typical starting salary of 18,000. Experienced IT technicians qualified at Advanced level would expect to earn up to 30,000 a year. The IT sector has many opportunities for employment as Consultants and Self Employed specialists with an even higher earning potential. 19

21 Motor Vehicle Intermediate/Advanced What does an Motor Vehicle Technician do? A motor vehicle technician is responsible for the repair and service of cars, vans, motorbikes, lorries and coaches. They work on all vehicle mechanics and electrics, engine mechanical and electrical systems, exhaust systems, air-conditioning & security systems. Intermediate Apprenticeship Motor Vehicle Repair Competence Unit Level 2 Motor Vehicle Repair Principles Level 2 Transferable Skills in English, Maths and ICT (Functional Skills) Level 1 (ERR) Level 2 Diploma in Light/Heavy Vehicle M&R Competence Level 2 in Light/ Heavy Vehicle. What will I study as Motor Vehicle Apprentice? Health, Safety & Housekeeping, Skills in materials, Fabrication, Tools & Measuring Devices, Vehicle Maintenance - Remove & Replace of components, Diagnose & Rectify Vehicle Engine & Electrical Faults. Intermediate (L2): 2 years Advanced (L3): 1-1 ½ years Advanced Apprenticeship Motor Vehicle Repair Competence Unit Level 3 Motor Vehicle Repair Principles Level 3 Transferable Skills in English, Maths and ICT (Functional Skills) Level 2 (ERR) Level 3 Diploma in Light/Heavy Vehicle M&R Competence Level 3 in Light/ Heavy Vehicle. You will attend College one day a week during the course of your programme. Mechanic, Vehicle Technician, Service Advisor or Workshop Manager 15K - 25K. 20

23 Painting and Decorating Intermediate What does a painting and decorating apprentice do? As a painting and decorating apprentice you would work on a variety of domestic and industrial projects ranging from re-decorating homes to applying heavy-duty finishes to large structures like bridges or projects such as housing developments. Intermediate Apprenticeship Knowledge units. NVQ units. Mathematics (Functional Skills) Level 1. (ERR). What will I study as a painter and Decorator Apprentice? Erecting and dismantling access/ working platforms in the workplace, preparing surfaces for painting and decorating in the workplace. Applying paint system by brush and roller in the workplace, health, safety and welfare in the workplace and productive practices in the workplace. Moving, handling and storing resources in the workplace. Intermediate (L2): 2 years L2 Diploma in Painting and Decorating and special effects L2 NVQ in Painting and Decorating You will attend College one day a week for 2 years during the course of your programme. Painter & Decorator, Interior Designer, Commercial Contractor, Specialist Restorer 14K - 23K Self-Employed Painter and Decorators set their own pay rates. 22

24 Plastering Intermediate/Advanced What does a plasterer do? A plasterer is responsible for applying different kinds of plaster to internal walls and ceilings so that they are ready for decorating. You could also cover outside walls with coatings, such as sand and cement render or pebble-dash. Intermediate/Advanced Apprenticeship Level 2/3 NVQ Diploma in plastering Level 2/3 Diploma in plastering Mathematics (Functional Skills) Level 1/2. (ERR). Intermediate (L2): 2 years Advanced (L3): 1 ½ years L2/L3 Diploma in Plastering and L2/L3 NVQ in Plastering You will attend College one day a week 14K - 25K What will I study as a plastering Apprentice? The history of plastering. How to use plastering tools and plastering products, prepare walls and ceilings of prior to applying plaster, apply sand/cement and lightweight plaster to various backgrounds, create and fix fibrous plasterwork such as dado rails and ceiling centres, apply external render and floor screed. 23

25 Plumbing Intermediate/Advanced What does a Plumber do? The majority of work is to install bathrooms (cold & hot water and sanitation), heating systems, service and repair domestic and commercial establishments. They also work with gas, oil, solid fuel and renewable systems. Functional Skills at Level 1 in Maths, English & ICT. Unvented & Water Regulation Award. What will I study as a Plumber Apprentice? Plumbing Skills (theory and practical activity), Health & Safety at Work, Hot and Cold Water Sanitation and Drainage Central Heating. Intermediate (L2): 2 years Advanced (L3): 2 years Advanced (L3) Apprenticeship Competence qualification Knowledge qualification Mathematics (Functional Skills) Level 2 (ERR) City & Guilds NVQ Diploma in Plumbing & Heating at Level 3. Functions skills at Level 2 in Maths, English & ICT. Unvented & Water Regulation Award. You will attend College one day a week during the course of your programme. Progression You can progress to a Gas, Oil or Solid Fuel qualification. Plumber, Gas Service Engineer and Renewable Energy Installer Once qualified and experienced many plumbers become self-employed with greater earning potential 18K - 35K. 24

26 Wood Occupations Intermediate/Advanced What does a Carpenter and Bench Joiner do? A bench joiner is responsible for making the structures required for a building site. Examples include doors and window frames. The role of the carpenter joiner is to fit these structures on a building site. General Health & Safety, Moving, Handling and Storing Resources, Installing First Fixing Components, Installing Second Fixing Components, Erecting Structural Carcassing, Producing Setting Out Details, Marking Out From Setting Out Details, Manufacturing Routine and Bench Joinery Products. 27 Skills for Business Menu During your Apprenticeship at Carlisle College you will cover the technical content of your Apprenticeship, as well as Functional Skills (Maths, English and ICT). To really add value for both Apprentice and Employer, we have included a menu of optional short courses. These are the skills that employers tell us make the difference.
