3 What are Apprenticeships? What is an Apprenticeship Framework? Apprenticeships are cross-party supported government programmes enabling people to learn and gain nationally recognised qualifications whilst earning a wage or salary. Employers can use Apprenticeships to train both new and existing employees and funding is available to train apprentices, depending on their age. An Apprenticeship is not a qualification in itself, but a framework of qualifications that contain separately certified units designed by employers and Sector Skills Councils to meet employers needs. Under the new Qualifications Credit Framework (QCF), a learner can choose from a wide range of relevant units. applicable to the chosen pathway relevant to your business needs. This offers the learner more freedom, choice and flexibility in learning and tailored training solutions for your business development. Benefits - A grow your own approach will enable young people to flourish and develop into valuable members of your business, and provide you with managers and leaders of the future. FACT 1. Competence Element NVQ This is a nationally recognised vocational qualification (NVQ) which gives the apprentice the skills needed to do a job. 2. Knowledge Element - Technical Certificate A technical certificate is a knowledge based qualification which helps develop an understanding of the industry or role. 3. Transferable Skills Element - Functional Skills These are practical, applied skills relevant both to young people and adult learners. They will help develop important skills like communication, team work, problem solving and presentations skills. These could be Maths, English or ICT. 4. Employment Rights and Responsibilities Element Each framework must include a requirement for the apprentices to develop knowledge and understanding about the world of employment. 5. Personal Learning and Thinking Skills Element This provides a framework for describing the qualities and skills needed for success in learning and life. The framework comprises six groups of skills: independent enquirers, creative thinkers, reflective learners, team workers, self-managers and effective participants. Crossrail has worked with Lambeth College in the development and delivery of a number of Apprenticeships. Lambeth s staff have been adaptable and engaged from the start, and have provided an excellent apprentice recruitment service. 80% of those employers who employ apprentices agree they make their workplace more productive. Source: National Apprenticeship Service Website, 2014 Delivering quality Apprenticeships is a top priority for Crossrail, and we are pleased to be working with Lambeth College to deliver these opportunities. Gordon Mole, Employment & Skills Manager at CrossRail 1

4 APPRENTICE How do Apprenticeships work? An Apprenticeship programme is fundamentally designed to be a work-based learning programme whereby instructor-led learning can be immediately applied by apprentices in a real work context and is delivered via a mixture of on and off-the-job learning 80% of learning is done in the workplace. The qualifications contained in the framework reflect the overall design of an Apprenticeship. This is the second Apprenticeship I have done and I love it. Everyone around me has faith in my abilities and I have been given a lot of confidence in what I can achieve. Andrew Tate Business and Administration How long is an Apprenticeship? There is no fixed length for any programme and the length of an Apprenticeship varies depending on the prior skills levels of the apprentice, the qualification being obtained and the industry sector. Generally, Apprenticeships take a minimum of between 12 months and 18 months to complete. Benefits: This is a great way to develop raw talent, ensuring your apprentices have the knowledge and skills your business needs to progress in the future. The units from the competence qualification must be assessed on-the-job in the workplace. The knowledge component (or technical certificate) will generally be taught in an off-the-job setting, and assessed using assignments or tests, to ensure the apprentice has gained the under pinning theory and principles required for the role. Apprentices gain the practical skills they need to succeed in their industry as well as developing a range of relevant work skills to meet the demands of your organisation. Benefits: You will have an employee who is work ready and keen to develop their skills and knowledge. How is the training delivered? Lambeth College will provide the apprentice with subject knowledge and support to develop their skills, while the employer will provide the practical experience to put those skills to the test, collating evidence for completion of the NVQ Diploma. Training can be classroom based or in the workplace, depending on the subject, employers own needs and the training provider. Apprentices will spend at least 80% of their time with the employer receiving on the job training. Methods used include: Work Based Delivery Structured Workshop Activities Observations Professional Discussions Witness Testimony Self Reflective Account Knowledge Questions Projects 2

5 Types of Apprenticeships As an employer, what can I expect? There are three levels of Apprenticeships available for those aged 16 and over. Intermediate Apprenticeships (equivalent to five good GCSE passes) Intermediate apprentices work towards a level 2 qualification and achievement of this this may allow entry to an Advanced Apprenticeship. Advanced Apprenticeships (equivalent to two A level passes) Advanced apprentices work towards a level 3 qualification. To start this programme, the applicant should ideally have five GCSEs (grade C or above) or have completed an Intermediate Apprenticeship. Higher Apprenticeships Higher apprentices work towards a level 4 qualification and can progress to higher education, including university degrees. Prior to the training programme: An advisory meeting to discuss business outcomes and training needed Comprehensive recruitment service Accurate information on the most appropriate training, which will provide flexibility to suit your business needs Clear information on content, duration, assessment requirements and costs Access to additional support for learners with disabilities or learning needs Information, advice and guidance for each learner. At the start of the training programme: A comprehensive induction including initial advice and guidance Information on content, a timetable, assessment of progress, regularity of reviews, health and safety requirements and equal opportunities review. During the training programme: FACT High quality training taking into account your business needs and individual s ability A professional and highly competent delivery team with vocational expertise Regular updates and review of progress of your apprentices against agreed targets A welcoming learning environment irrespective of race, religion, age, nationality, gender, disability, or sexual orientation. After the training programme: Evaluation of the benefits of the training programme to your organisation within three months of completion Businesses that offer Apprenticeship programmes view them as beneficial to their long-term development. Source: 2011 British Chambers of Commerce Research Suggestions of relevant follow-on or new opportunities should they arise. Benefits: You will be able to plan for your workforce to develop and mature to support the needs of your business. 3

6 APPRENTICE What are my responsibilities as an employer? To work with Lambeth College to ensure that apprentices are able to put their learning into practice and develop their skills To be responsible for paying the apprentice a wage or salary, providing an induction and treating them as you would any other employee To give apprentices time to learn and study by allowing them to attend training, supervising their practice and ensuring their health and safety At work I learn things I don t get to do at College and vice versa. I get a lot of job satisfaction from this type of work and that is very important to me. To secure the mandatory industry and legal requirements for employees e.g. CRB checks, health and safety checks, Employer Liability Insurance To fully support your apprentices on their programme through participation in 10 weekly reviews. APPRENTICE Katrina Baranyi Hairdressing What will it cost me? Apprenticeships are available for three age groups with various levels of funding. Learners aged 16 to 18 are fully funded. There is an expectation that an employer will contribute to the training of employees over the age of 19 and this is reflected in the funding allocated to colleges. A fee is usually charged for learners over the age of 19. If you decide to train your current staff, you will continue to pay them their usual wage or salary. If you employ a new apprentice you will pay them at a level that reflects their skill, experience and age. Benefits: For younger apprentices you will be able to access government funding for their training. My tutors at Lambeth College have been very keen for me to learn as much as possible and they really do support and guide you well here. I intend to make the College and my employers proud of me. Jodie Johnson Painting and Decorating 4
