2 WHAT IS AN APPRENTICESHIP? Apprenticeships combine study with practical training in a job. Apprentices are employed by a company or organisation enabling them to work alongside experienced employees, earn a wage, gain employment skills and study in College for one day per week for a related qualification. There are 4 Levels of Apprenticeship in England: 1. Pre-Apprenticeships Pre-Apprenticeships are for those who are unemployed and wish to brush up on their skills including interview techniques, IT Skills or employability skills. Employers are looking for people with Good Literacy and Communication skills Good Numeracy and IT skills Good personal presentation and time-keeping Good attitude to work with voluntary experience or paid part-time or full-time work relating to the area of employment you are interested in. A Pre-Apprenticeship can help you to develop these skills before progressing to an Apprenticeship. To find out more contact Westminster Kingsway College on or courseinfo@westking.ac.uk. 2. Intermediate Level Apprenticeships The Intermediate Level course works towards a National Vocational Qualification Level 2 (NVQ) in your chosen specialist area You will also gain Functional Skills qualifications, which teach you valuable skills, including Maths, English and in some frameworks, ICT You will also learn about Employment Rights and Responsibilities and Personal Learning and Thinking Skills The amount of time it should take to complete the training depends on the industry you choose to work in. Higher Apprenticeships The Higher Level course works towards a National work-based learning qualifications such as NVQ Level 4 and, in some cases, a knowledge-based qualification such as a Foundation Degree Andrew Hill Business Administration Apprentice Parliamentary Academy Westminster Kingsway College Apprenticeships take between 1 to 4 years to complete depending on their Level. They are available for anyone over 16 years old, whether you are a school leaver or wanting to start a new career. You will gain technical knowledge and practical experience through workbased training. Apprenticeships can make organisations more effective, competent, productive and competitive by addressing skills requirements directly. They are designed to help employees get the skills needed for businesses to succeed. Having found the Parliamentary Academy scheme online, Andrew Hill is currently working in the office of Matthew Hancock MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Further Education, Skills and Lifelong Learning. Andrew said: It is a fantastic opportunity to be an Apprentice in the Minister s office. He is very enthusiastic about the Apprenticeship programme so it is great that he has an Apprentice in his own office. Apprenticeships work really well for me. I like the balance between working day to day and attending College once a fortnight where we get feedback on our work and learn about things like health and safety in the workplace. I also meet Apprentices who are working with MPs to share ideas. It is great to have this opportunity. 04 Call Click courseinfo@westking.ac.uk Text WKC to Call Click courseinfo@westking.ac.uk Text WKC to

The Apprenticeship provided work-based training across programme making departments for popular shows, including EastEnders, Strictly Come Dancing, Newsround and The One Show. The Apprenticeship also led to the development of a Creative and Digital Media Level 3 BTEC provided in partnership with the BBC Academy and Westminster Kingsway College. Caroline Prendergast, Skills & HR Director at BBC London Apprenticeships, said: By creating these schemes we have provided the opportunity for individuals to gain skills and experience so that they are work ready. 6 Training is always relevant and tailored to the needs of your sector by people who genuinely understand what you do.

7 92% of employers I M AN EMPLOYER Why should I hire an Apprentice? who employ Apprentices believe that Apprenticeships lead to a more motivated and satisfied workforce*. 80% of companies that employ Apprentices agree that Apprentices make a workplace more productive. Apprenticeships are designed around employers needs and lead to nationally recognised qualifications for the Apprentice. A study by Sheffield University measured the long term financial benefit to investing in Apprenticeships. A Level 3 Advanced Apprentice will generate an additional lifetime benefit to themselves and their employer of 105,000 compared to someone who does not gain an Apprenticeship. Apprentices: Gain knowledge and skills that enable your business to work better and quicker Strengthen your bottom line by improving productivity and enabling you to be more competitive Fill any skills gaps in your workforce, often introducing new techniques and technology to increase productivity Attract higher calibre staff and lead to a more motivated and committed workforce who stay longer, cutting recruitment and training costs Start their working life with a company so that they can be trained to embrace the company culture and have a commitment to the overall objectives Can have a positive effect on the business, encouraging a culture of learning and innovative solutions Apprenticeships. The College will do the majority of administration associated with hiring an Apprentice. We will also help you to ensure that the training provided is of a sufficient quality. Westminster Kingsway College Apprenticeships are flexibly structured to fit around your company s needs without disruption to your business. They are designed so that, where possible, the work an Apprentice does during the day counts towards their development and qualification. As with any other employee, you are responsible for giving the Apprentice an induction into their role and providing on-the-job training. The training process also includes specific milestones and assessment leading to a nationally-recognised qualification. We can work with you to explain the process and will begin by evaluating the existing skills of your chosen Apprentice to identify what training is required. A training plan can then be agreed to ensure that the Apprentice meets national quality standards. If your company has a training programme already in place, we may be able to take on the role of providing the training. Your company s training will be assessed to check all the key knowledge and skills are covered and the Apprentice will be regularly assessed to ensure they meet the required standards until they qualify. 8 How much time would the Apprentice spend in the workplace? This varies according to the type of Apprenticeship but mostly the Apprentice is training on the job. Some time might be spent away from the pressures of daily tasks but this is usually no more than one day per week. It could involve a trainer coming to your site or the Apprentice attending a class at College. Apprentices learn the skills needed to operate effectively within your company. Depending on their Level, initially these can include foundation skills in Maths, English and IT, Personal Learning and Thinking Skills and Employee Rights and Responsibilities. They then develop the knowledge that will underpin their specific Apprenticeship, for example they will understand why yeast makes bread rise rather than just knowing that it does. Based on this knowledge, they will develop the skills needed to perform the tasks of their Apprenticeship to the required Level. There are also regular assessments where Apprentices have to demonstrate that they have the capability to deliver the skills that the Apprenticeship requires on a consistent basis. How would I choose an Apprentice? You may wish to offer Apprenticeships to existing staff where you will have a good idea of their motivation and potential or alternatively you may choose to employ new Apprentices. If you need help in recruiting suitable Apprentices or choosing existing staff, please contact us and we will be happy to support you with this process. If you are an employer looking to employ an Apprentice then please contact our Apprenticeship team at Westminster Kingsway College to arrange a free consultation courseinfo@westking.ac.uk Jordan Clarke Apprenticeship in Facilities Management Jordan Clarke first heard about Apprenticeships when he was researching different training options online. He discovered that he could train in Facilities Management through an Apprenticeship programme at Redbridge Council with training provided by Westminster Kingsway College. Jordan s Apprenticeship includes Organisational Structures, Global Trends within Facilities Management and how to run a business. The majority of his tuition takes place in the workplace. Jordan said: Apprenticeships are a great way to learn and what most people don t realise is that it opens up so many doors for you and your career. It is a unique environment and I credit my success to hard work and the support of my employer and teachers. 9 Find out more Facebook.com/WestminsterKingsway How much does it cost? The Apprentice will need to be paid at least the National Minimum Wage for Apprentices. The government also supplies some funding for training through the National Apprenticeship Service, with the amount varying depending on the age of the Apprentice and the size of the employer year-olds are fully funded whereas the company may need to co-fund the training for an older Apprentice. How do you know the Apprentice has met the standards? Apprenticeships are designed so that skills and competence are observed on the job, so an Apprentice s daily output helps them to qualify. They can be assessed by their line manager, who best knows their work and can confirm that the Apprentice has reached the required standard, or we can provide an external assessor. We will work with you to find the best balance to suit your needs. What are the next steps to hiring an Apprentice or enrolling an existing employee? Contact Westminster Kingsway College. We are here to help so that you find the best solution for your business. If you have existing training within your company, we may be able to manage the programme in-house, using your own supervisors and managers. We can work with you to identify the skills gaps in your business and help you to find the best training solution, either through internal training or external support. It is all about fitting the Apprenticeship to your business, not the other way around. 16 Call Click courseinfo@westking.ac.uk Text WKC to Call Click courseinfo@westking.ac.uk Text WKC to

11 APPLICATION GUIDE If you are an employer looking to employ an Apprentice then please contact our Apprenticeship team at Westminster Kingsway College to arrange a free consultation courseinfo@westking.ac.uk You can also find out more at How to apply for an Apprenticeship To apply for an Apprenticeship you must be: 16 or over Eligible to work in England Not in full-time education To be eligible for an Apprenticeship, you need to be in paid employment, in most cases you need to work a minimum of 30 hours per week. Your employment should be in a job relevant to the Apprenticeship framework and industry that you wish to study. If you are applying for an Apprenticeship in Hospitality or Professional Cookery then the Hospitality Apprenticeships team at Westminster Kingsway College can help to match you with employers in the Hospitality industry. For applications for all other Apprenticeships please follow the advice below. If you want to become an Apprentice but do not have a job, there are a number of ways that you can get started: Option 1 Find a job as an Apprentice through the vacancies advertised on the Apprenticeship Vacancy Matching Service (AVMS). Visit for more information and links to the AVMS. You will need to register online to search and apply for Apprenticeships vacancies with employers in the industry that you wish to work. If you are short-listed for an Apprenticeship vacancy, you will be contacted by the employer or a training provider to attend an initial assessment and interview. If you are successful, you will be employed as an Apprentice on a one year contract. Some employers may release you one day per week to attend College or your employer may prefer that all of your the assessments and learning will be completed in the work place. This will depend on the type of Apprenticeship and your experience. Option 2 Register for employment as an Apprentice with an Apprenticeship Training Agency (ATA). The ATA will match you with vacancies on their database. Some employers prefer to use an ATA rather than employ an Apprentice directly. The ATA will carry out an initial assessment for literacy, numeracy and IT. You will also be assessed on time-keeping and personal presentation skills at the assessment. There are a number of ATAs in London, which can be found in your telephone directory or online. Please contact courseinfo@westking.ac.uk or for the latest list of ATAs that Westminster Kingsway College works with. 20 Call Click courseinfo@westking.ac.uk Text WKC to Call Click courseinfo@westking.ac.uk Text WKC to

12 Option 3 Find your own employer. Talk to employers you would like to work for and see if they would be interested in taking you on as an Apprentice. The employer must pay you the National Minimum Wage for an Apprentice but if they are a small employer they could claim some of this money back through a government grant. Westminster Kingsway College can advise your employer on how to apply for this. Your employers will need to agree to release you for your assessments so that you can earn as you learn. If you find an employer who would like to employ you as an Apprentice then please ask them to get in touch with the Apprenticeships team at Westminster Kingsway College. Option 4 If you are aged and finding it difficult to gain an Apprenticeship placement, you could apply to join a Pre-Apprenticeship course at Westminster Kingsway College. The Pre-Apprenticeship course is for 12 weeks and during that time we will support you to improve your Maths, English and ICT skills. You will also gain a vocational qualification. You can also attend the New Directions Recruitment Centre at Westminster Kingsway College Regent s Park Centre, where you will gain professional advice and support in applying for Apprenticeship vacancies. The team of professional recruitment experts will also work with you on CV writing, Apprenticeship applications and interview skills. 13 MONEY MATTERS Apprenticeships provide an opportunity to earn while you learn. The employer pays Apprentices a salary with training provided on the job and in College. The National Minimum Wage for Apprentices is 2.65 per hour (in May 2013). However, as skills develop, many employers increase wages. Research has found that Apprentices can earn an average of 170 net pay per week. Age National Apprenticeship Service contribution up to 100% up to 50% 25+ Contribution for specified places Employers can benefit from financial support from the National Apprenticeship Service to cover the cost of training Apprentices. This will depend on your age. Please use the chart to find out how much support is available. Employers will also need to pay for the cost of the supervision, support and mentoring that they will need to put in place. The National Apprenticeship Service will match employer s contribution to hiring Apprentices by covering in full, or in part, the training costs. 14 Employer Incentive Apprenticeship Grant for Employers of 16 to 24 year olds (AGE 16 to 24) AGE 16 to 24 has already helped thousands of employers to grow their business by employing an Apprentice. AGE 16 to 24 is available until 31 December 2013, subject to eligibility and availability. The AGE 16 to 24 Grant for Employers aims to support businesses, who would not otherwise be in a position to do so, to recruit individuals aged 16 to 24 into employment though the Apprenticeship programme. The National Apprenticeship Service will provide the Grant to eligible employers, to recruit qualifying Apprentices, with an individual value of 1,500. Employers can be paid ten grants in total during the lifetime of the initiative. AGE 16 to 24 targets employers with less than 1000 employees, who are new to Apprenticeships or have not enrolled a new recruit or existing employee onto an Apprenticeship programme in the previous 12 months. AGE has allowed us to employ an Apprentice as an extra member of staff, which we could not have done without the help of the Grant. We think the scheme is really beneficial and we are already looking at employing another Apprentice next year. 15 AGE 16 to 24 has made the worthwhile decision to hire an Apprentice even more cost effective. Zoe now works at the Trade Union Congress where she is undertaking her Apprenticeship in Business Administration and believes it is the best decision she has ever made. Zoe said: I find it challenging at times, but I have learnt different skills, such as time management and organisational planning, which I believe you can only really learn while you are in the workplace. Training as an Apprentice has given me new found confidence. Before I started this programme I was a little lost and didn t have a career path planned. Now I know that I want to be in events management and I am working towards my goal. 28 Call Click courseinfo@westking.ac.uk Text WKC to Call Click courseinfo@westking.ac.uk Text WKC to

If eligible, you will be able to apply for a loan to meet the upfront costs of your qualification, which will be paid directly to the College on your behalf. On occasion it is necessary to withdraw or move courses owing to a vairety of unforeseen circumstances. The College cannot therefore guarantee the provision of all courses advertised in this Guide. The fees payable are those in force at the time of enrolment, which supersede any that may previously have been advertised. Ben Purton Executive Chef from Guoman Hotel Group at the Royal Horseguards Hotel Ben Burton initiated the Guoman Chef Apprenticeship programme within the group in partnership with Westminster Kingsway College. He has employed many young, budding chefs helping them to flourish by inspiring and mentoring them as they complete their Apprenticeship and progress with their career. Ben said: I was involved in an Apprenticeship scheme when I first entered the kitchens back in 1991 and have always seen them as the most positive way to bring young people into our great industry and show them all of the options that are available to them. At Guoman Group, we pride ourselves in promoting a great teaching environment and are always keen to raise awareness of the opportunities within the industry. Ben Purton I have a great relationship with local schools and colleges and I wanted to start a process within Guoman so that we could attract new chefs to the business and start to develop our head chefs of the future. We sent all of the Apprentices on day release to Westminster Kingsway College and every one of them progressed well, matured as chefs and became better members of our teams in the hotels. Such was the success of the first crop that when we sowed the seeds for the second time we extended the scheme and 12 Apprentice chefs completed the course. Apprentices are a key ingredient for our industry to thrive and we will continue to sow, grow and harvest the best talent we possibly can so that our hotels and the industry will continue to benefit in the future. 32 Call Click courseinfo@westking.ac.uk Text WKC to Call Click courseinfo@westking.ac.uk Text WKC to
