Unlocking your potential The Level Intermediate Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care Validated by City & Guilds

The Level Intermediate Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care What is an Apprenticeship? An Apprenticeship is a job with an accompanying skills development programme. Designed by employers in the sector, it allows the apprentice to gain technical knowledge and real practical experience, along with functional and personal skills, required for their immediate job and future career. These are acquired through a mix of learning in the workplace, formal off-the-job training and the opportunity to practise and embed new skills in a real work context. This broader mix differentiates the Apprenticeship experience from training delivered to meet narrowly focused job needs. On completion of the Apprenticeship the apprentice must be able to undertake the full range of duties, in the range of circumstances appropriate to the job, confidently and competently to the standard set by the industry. The business benefits of Apprenticeships Apprenticeships are a proven way of developing and retaining employees 80% of employers report savings through reduced staff turnover. Apprenticeships offer breadth and depth of learning, and a flexible approach that can easily fulfil employers needs. Improved productivity 81% of employers agree that apprentices boost productivity. Structured career development. 88% of employers agree that apprentices are more motivated and satisfied. 89% of employers see Apprenticeships as vital to the future of their business. Apprenticeships seamlessly combine theory and practice meaning that apprentices apply what they learn on the job. Statistics from the National Apprenticeship Service/Populus Employer Survey 009 and City & Guilds Skills Economy Research 011. The financial case The costs associated with employing a young apprentice are very reasonable. Training is FREE for year olds. Training costs on Intermediate Apprenticeship programmes are massively subsidised for all other age groups. The number of young adults (16-4) currently unemployed is around %; hiring a young apprentice can be far more cost-effective than traditional recruitment. Offering Level training through Apprenticeships and recruiting young unemployed people allows organisations to achieve social outcomes and contribute to their local communities through creating employment, economic empowerment and contributing to the education agenda. SME Grants available There are 1500 grants available for organisations with fewer than 50 employees, recruiting Apprentices aged 16-4, who have not recruited an Apprentice within the last 1 months. For further information, please request a fact sheet from us or visit the National Apprenticeship Service website. The Intermediate Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care The Centre for Housing and Support (CHS) Intermediate Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care offers the many benefits of an Apprenticeship which can be transferred by the holder into a wide variety of job roles in the private, public and voluntary sectors, whilst providing specific insights into the particular health and social care requirements of sheltered and extra-care housing providers. The CHS run teaching and training provision throughout England and have considerable experience in delivering Apprenticeships in the housing sector. The Intermediate (Level ) Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care provides an excellent foundation for progression either to a more sector-specific qualification such as an Intermediate or Advanced Apprenticeship in Housing, or to an Advanced Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care. It also forms a good basis for progression to other Level Advanced Apprenticeships where social care is involved in the role. Who would benefit from an Intermediate Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care? Health and Social Care is about helping service users/tenants, including those who are elderly and those with disabilities, with particular needs. Involving a diverse range of functions that are constantly developing and changing, social care

requires skills such as person-centred approaches, relationship-building with service users/tenants and their families, supporting individuals to access and use information and assistive technology, teamworking, etc. The Intermediate Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care supports these skills, encouraging a strong sense of responsibility, and appreciation of equality and inclusion. It is suitable for: Young people working directly with service users/tenants e.g. support workers, or those employed in indirect roles. It can also be beneficial for: Existing staff who have been out of education for a long time and are initially reluctant to study at Level, but want to improve their general awareness of health and social care roles within a housing organisation and develop their study techniques; Existing staff who lack a formal vocational qualification (Existing staff are able to maintain current employment and, if appropriate, job roles.) Individuals volunteering in the sector who can achieve paid work experience and training through becoming an apprentice. Eligibility Intermediate Apprenticeships in Health and Social Care are open to anyone within a care-based role, working a minimum 16 hour week (although 0 hours is preferable) and who doesn t have qualifications higher than a Level : for example a degree or Higher National Certificate or Diploma; or a very similar qualification (such as Level Diploma in Health and Social Care or a Level Certificate in Preparing to work in Adult Social Care). Anyone between the ages of 16 and 64 is eligible. Apprenticeships can apply to new starters and existing staff with years of experience. Many organisations are, in fact, using Apprenticeships as a cost-effective way of enabling staff to gain a wide range of excellent qualifications in the housing sector. How long will the training take? The Intermediate Apprenticeship will take 1 months. Framework The Level Apprenticeship consists of the following qualifications: City and Guilds Level Diploma in Health and Social Care The City and Guilds Level Diploma in Health and Social Care is a hybrid qualification delivering and assessing knowledge, understanding and skills in the form of units of competence which detail what the apprentice must do in order to be deemed competent. The practical element of the qualification is completed and assessed in the workplace and supported by an assessor who will make regular visits and provide advice and guidance as the apprentice completes his/her online electronic portfolio. The apprentice will also have to provide evidence, through their portfolio, that they have the underpinning knowledge and understanding to be able to perform their job. The diploma is an introductory, vocationally-related qualification, which is contextualised, in its delivery by CHS, to the housing sector. It covers the essentials of everyday health and social care tasks in a sheltered or extra care housing environment, from safeguarding and health and safety to communication and use of information, enabling the apprentice to work empathically and effectively with service users/tenants and their families in a range of housing sector environments and situations. There are options for those who are new to the job, as well as those with more experience. This qualification can complement an employer s existing employee induction. There are nine mandatory units, comprising 4 credits in total: Unit Title Introduction to communication in health, social care, or children s and young people s settings Introduction to personal development in health, social care, or children s and young people s settings Introduction to equality and inclusion in health, social care, or children s and young people s settings Introduction to duty of care in health, social care, or children s and young people s settings Principles of safeguarding and protection in health and social care The role of the health and social care worker Implement person-centred approaches in health and social care Contribute to health and safety in health and social care Handle information in health and social care settings Credit Value The above are internally assessed, generally by portfolio, with one assignment around safeguarding and protection

Apprentices will then choose additional optional units (usually between five and eight), assessed through a combination of assignment and portfolio, to make up a further credits drawn from a selection focused on requirements in the sheltered/extra care housing arena: Credit Unit Title Value Required Option: Understand mental well-being and mental health promotion Choice of Optional Units (up to 4 credits): Dementia Awareness Understand mental health problems Understand the factors affecting older people Understand the benefits of engaging in activities in social care Choice of Optional Units (up to 19 credits): Support individuals to access and use information about services and facilities Gain access to the homes of individuals, deal with emergencies, and ensure security on departure Contribute to supporting individuals in the use of assistive technology Facilitate person-centred assessment, planning, implementation and review Support individuals to live at home 4 Support individuals with specific communication needs Work in partnership with families to support individuals Working as part of a team in Health and Social Care or Children and Young People s Settings The above combination takes apprentices through a generic pathway. For a dementia pathway, the Dementia Awareness unit must be taken as a required option from the above offer and at least three credits substituted by means of the units below: Unit Title Required Option (at least one of the following): Understand and implement a person-centred approach to the care and support of individuals with dementia Understand and enable interaction and communication with individuals with dementia Approaches to enable rights and choices for individuals with dementia whilst minimizing risks Credit Value Other units are also available. Please contact us to enquire about provision tailored further to your organisational requirements. Apprentices will be supported through the qualification by a combination of face-to-face, through resources on the CHS Moodle virtual learning environment, workbooks, and telephone and online support from the course tutor. NB: Because of the elements of online support throughout this Intermediate Apprenticeship, it is essential that all apprentices have regular access, at home and/or at work, to a computer with an internet connection. Holistic assessment will be carried out enabling the apprentice s skills to be assessed in a real, crosscurricular, working context. Wherever possible, the NVQ assessor will also be the course tutor for the underpinning knowledge and understanding to better facilitate linking theory and practice. Level Award in Employment Responsibilities and Rights in Health, Social Care or Children and Young People s Settings This qualification consists of one unit and provides the knowledge to equip apprentices with an understanding of the health, social care and young people s sector and their role within it. It includes statutory responsibilities and rights of employees and employers; awareness of own occupational role and how it fits within the sector; agreed ways of working with employers; issues of public concern and how these may influence changes in the sector. Functional Skills (FS) As part of their Intermediate Apprenticeship in Health & Social Care, apprentices will also be required to complete Functional Skills qualifications at level 1 (equivalent in level to a D-G grade at GCSE). These comprise a firm grounding in the essential practical skills in English and maths, which are acknowledged to be vital for young people and adults to participate effectively in life, learning and work. Functional Skills are not just about knowledge in English and maths; they are also about being able to use that knowledge in real-life and work situations. Functional Skills qualifications are achieved through completion of online and speaking, listening and communication assessments, which will take up to ½ hours for English and 1½ hours for maths. Apprentices starting an Apprenticeship before September 016 will satisfy the Apprenticeship requirement for the relevant Functional Skills qualification if they have achieved, in that subject, a GCSE at Grade E or above with enhanced Functional Skills content, dated September 01 or later, or any of the following qualifications in the five years before they start the Apprenticeship, and before September 01: GCSE (Grades A*-C) A Level or AS Level (Grades A-E)

However, any apprentices who have not achieved a GCSE in English and Maths at Grades A*-C will be required to follow an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) working towards this goal and will be offered an appropriate support programme as part of their apprenticeship. Within a few days of sign-up, they will receive log-in details for the Guroo online website, where they will be required to complete the appropriate Initial Assessments within four days. These will identify their strengths together with areas for development, and will enable a tailored ILP to be set in place for them. Personal Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) Personal Learning and Thinking Skills comprise six groups of skills, namely: Creative Thinking; Independent Enquiry; Reflective Learning; Team Working; Self-Management; and Effective Participation. The apprentice will complete a PLTS workbook in order to reflect on the skills they have developed in these areas, and to provide evidence for assessment.
