1 Diploma in Arts and Media (Visual Arts and Design) (Level 6) LEVEL 6 STUDY OPTIONS Full time or part time equivalent. TOTAL CREDITS 240 LOCATIONS AND DATES Nelson: 20 February 2017 LENGTH 2 years full time; each year of full time study is 42 weeks, made up of 36 tuition weeks and 6 weeks of study breaks. NATIONAL QUALIFICATION CODE NE Diploma in Arts and Media (Visual Arts and Design) (Level 6) If you want to live creatively and turn your talent for art and design into your career, the Diploma in Arts and Media (Visual Arts and Design) is a great way to start. You may choose to do projects within a range of topics including painting, illustration, printmaking, sculpture and jewellery. Career opportunities & pathways Graduates will be able to pursue further educational pathways and will be qualified to enter into undergraduate degree programmes such as the Bachelor of Arts and Media (Visual Arts and Design). Graduates will also be able to consider employment pathways and will: Have a set of relevant management skills for running an independent graphics and/or multimedia practice Have sufficient studio, design process and problem solving skills to produce work for an graphics and/or multimedia practice. 1

2 Entry requirements Academic Requirements Applicants under the age of 20 A minimum of 42 credits at Level 3 or higher on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework (NZQF), including at least 14 credits at NCEA Level 3 (or equivalent) in each of two subjects, of which at least one relates to English; and at least one is from the approved subject list; with a further 14 credits at Level 3 or higher taken from no more than two additional domains on the NZQF. Subject list: Design Painting Printmaking Graphics Technology Sculpture History of Art Photography Media Studies Design (Practical Art) Graphics History of Art History Music Studies Social Studies Painting (Practical Art) Photography (Practical Art) Printmaking (Practical Art) Sculpture (Practical Art) English Drama OR Successful completion of a recognised art/media foundation programme or equivalent, for example the Certificate in Arts & Media. Applicants aged 20 years or above No academic qualifications are required. All applicants may be invited to attend an interview to find out more about the programme and their suitability for it. English Language Requirements All applicants must have a level of English sufficient to be able to study at the level at which they enter the programme. Those students whose first language is not English will have:

3 An International English Language Testing System (IELTS) overall Academic Band score of at least 6 (with at least 5.5 in each component), issued within the last two years OR An equivalent qualification. If you do not have an IELTS test score, you may send us other evidence of your English language level. Please see NZQA English Language Entry Requirements for more details. (external link) Computer Literacy A reasonable level of computer literacy is needed. The programme involves producing work in electronic forms. Therefore, applicants accepted onto the programme without sufficient computer literacy will be invited to make use of NMIT s computer facilities in order to bring their computer skills up to a sufficient standard to succeed in their studies. Portfolio All applicants must submit a portfolio of work showing ability in the major in which they wish to study: visual arts and design. Portfolios should be Arts and/or media and/or creative writing portfolio at Level 3 or above or equivalent personal portfolio. The portfolio may include a selection of the following: Sketchbooks or workbooks showing the development of ideas; Arts or media or creative writing works, including both process works and finished works in the medium or field in which the applicant wishes to study; Photographs or slides or recordings relevant to the major in which the applicant wishes to study; Photographic or digital records of any of the above.
