2 2 AS AND A LEVEL GEOGRAPHY REFORM AN UPDATE GCSE and A Levels Reform: An Update The first teaching of new A Levels and GCSEs began in September We have been accredited by Ofqual for all of our reformed qualifications for first teaching from September The first teaching for this accredited qualification is September Background to The Reforms The former Secretary of State for Education, Michael Gove, initiated the reform of GCSEs and A Levels in February 2013, asking Ofqual to implement changes that would lead to new qualifications. By reforming GCSEs and A Levels, the Department for Education (DfE) intends to: Make the qualifications more ambitious Better prepare young people for employment and further study Give everyone greater confidence in the integrity and reliability of the qualifications system. The Government has stated that GCSEs will demand more from all students and that the purpose of taking A Levels is primarily for entry to university changes are needed so students are better prepared to start their university course. AS and A Level Timeline First teaching of new A Levels in Art and Design, Business, Computer Science, Economics, English Literature, English Language, English Language and Literature, History, Psychology, Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) and Sociology First teaching of new A Levels in Ancient Languages, Dance, Drama and Theatre, Geography, Modern Foreign Languages, Music, Physical Education and Religious Studies Sept 2015 June 2016 Sept 2016 June 2017 First exams for new AS qualifications in Art and Design, Business, Computer Science, Economics, English Literature, English Language, English Language and Literature, History, Psychology, Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) and Sociology First exams for new A Levels in Art and Design, Business, Computer Science, Economics, English Literature, English Language, English Language and Literature, History, Psychology, Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) and Sociology First exams for new AS qualifications in Ancient Languages, Dance, Drama and Theatre, Geography, Modern Foreign Languages, Music, Physical Education and Religious Studies

3 3 AS AND A LEVEL GEOGRAPHY Changes to Assessment New AS Levels The new AS Levels, for first teaching from September 2016, will be stand-alone qualifications in their own right. They will remain broadly at their current standard. There ll be one examination series each year, with the first assessment planned for June New A Levels New A Levels will be fully linear so assessment of a student s knowledge and understanding of the whole course takes place at the end of two years of study. (There ll be no exams in January.) The first assessment of two-year courses that start in September 2016 will be in June The AS will not count towards the final grade of an A Level, where assessment of the whole course will take place at the end of two years study. However, we are carefully designing our AS Levels to be co-taught with the first year of the A Level. We ll continue to work with teachers and other stakeholders to learn how best we can support you on this reform. For more information refer to ocr.org.uk/alevelreform First teaching of new A Levels and stand-alone AS Levels in a range of further subjects First exams for new A Levels in a range of further subjects Sept 2017 June 2018 June 2019 First exams for new A Levels in Ancient Languages, Dance, Drama and Theatre, Geography, Modern Foreign Languages, Music, Physical Education and Religious Studies First AS exams in a range of further subjects

4 4 AS AND A LEVEL GEOGRAPHY INTRODUCING GEOGRAPHY CHANGES AT A GLANCE AS and A Level Geography Our AS and A Level Geography specifications provide a dynamic, contemporary and exciting opportunity for students to engage with the world around them. Our specifications inspire a love of geography for lifelong learning, drawing on issues that are relevant to a student s own learning of the subject in a variety of contexts. Our AS and A Level Geography specifications have been designed to strengthen geographical and fieldwork skills gained at GCSE and delve more deeply into content. The AS and A Level are stand-alone qualifications, however, we have developed specifications with content that enables these qualifications to be co-teachable. The differences between the qualifications have been reflected in the assessment demands. The AS specification has been developed through content which enables fieldwork opportunities, as these skills gained by learners will be assessed within the examination. The introduction of the non-examined assessment at A Level is an exciting opportunity for learners to enquire and investigate an area of the specification which interests them. It will provide them with a set of invaluable skills with which to pursue further study in higher education or move into the world of work.
