1 SECTION POLYVINYL CHLORIDE PIPE, AWWA C900/C905 PART 1 GENERAL 1.01 SUMMARY A. Section Includes: 1. Furnish and install AWWA C900 PVC, DR 18 for 4 through 12 size and AWWA C905 PVC, DR 25 for 14 and larger polyvinyl chloride piping as indicated on the Drawings, including all required jointing materials, fittings, restrained joint fittings, and other appurtenances indicated, specified, or required for a complete installation including testing. Provide locating wire on all OVC pipe 4 and larger. B. Related Sections: 1. Section Submittal Procedures 2. Section Earthwork 3. Section Systems Disinfection and VOC Testing 1.02 REFERENCES A. AWWA C900: Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Pressure Pipe and Fabricated Fittings, 4 in. through 12 in., for Water Distribution. B. AWWA C905: Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) Pressure Pipe and Fabricated Fittings, 14 in. through 48 in., for Water Transmission and Distribution SUBMITTALS A. Submit in accordance with Section Submittal Procedures. 1. Layouts: a. Submit detailed installation drawings of piping, including fittings. b. Submit descriptive data to show that the following items conform to requirements of the Specifications.: 1) Pipe, fittings, and accessories. 2) Pipe couplings. 2. Submit certified test reports. a. Affidavit of compliance certifying: 1) all tests have been conducted. 2) all materials comply with applicable standards. 3) all materials comply with these specifications. b. Retain test information and make available to Resident Engineer on request

2 1.04 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Source Quality Control: 1. Identification marks: Clearly and permanently mark each length of pipe, including couplings and short lengths, with pipe size, class, type, test pressure and manufacturer s name. B. Testing: 1. Sample and test all materials in accordance with AWWA C900 and C Pipe not manufactured in the United States to be tested by an approved laboratory within the United States PRODUCT DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING A. Exercise care in transporting and handling to avoid damage to pipe and fittings. B. Store materials on site in enclosures or under protective coverings. C. Do not store materials directly on the ground. D. Keep inside of pipes and fittings free of dirt and debris, in accordance with City Standards. PART 2 PRODUCTS 2.01 MATERIALS A. Pipe: 1. AWWA C900 and C905, Class 200 PVC, dimension ratio (DR) 18, cast iron equivalent OD, material cell classification B per ASTM D1784. B. Joint Couplings: 1. PVC sleeve and two sealing rings. 2. Integrally cast bell and one sealing ring. 3. Rubber rings: ASTM D Fully restrain all bell joints. C. Fittings: a. JCM Sur-Grip Model 620 or EBBA Iron Series Gray iron: ANSI A21.10, 250 psi. 2. Ductile iron: ANSI A21.10, 350 psi. 3. Joints: a. Mechanical joints: ANSI A21.11 b. All mechanical joints shall be fully restrained. c. JCM Model 610 Sur-Grip Fitting Restrainer or EBBA Iron Series 2000PV

3 D. Coatings: 1. Heavy coal tar MIL-C-18480, Koppers 505 Bitumastic, Tnemec 476 Super Tnemecal, Porter Tarmastic 101, or equal. E. Lubricants: As recommended by the pipe manufacturer. F. Locating Wire: 1. Locating wire No. 10 AWG. PART 3 EXECUTION 3.01 INSPECTION A. Examine areas for: 1. Structural defects 2. Cracks and breaks 3. Deviations beyond allowable tolerances for pipe clearances. 4. Damage which penetrates deeper than 10% of pipe wall thickness as per awwa PREPARATION A. Shape trench foundation or bedding as required. 1. Dig bell or coupling holes. 2. Do not support pipe on blocks or mounds of earth INSTALLATION A. General: 1. Install pipe in accordance with AWWA C900 and C905 as modified herein or on the Drawings. 2. Perform all laying and jointing in Resident Engineer s presence. 3. Remove any identified defective material from the site as directed by the Resident Engineer. 4. Provide restrained joints at all deflections greater than 11-1/4 degrees unless otherwise noted on the Drawings. 5. Any damage greater than 10% wall thickness shall not be allowed in accordance with AWWA standards. B. Cutting: 1. Per pipe maufacturer s recommendations. 2. Do not fracture pipe, split ends, or leave ragged uneven edges. 3. Smooth cut ends to proper dimensions. 4. Bevel all field cuts 45degrees as per awwa

4 5. Provide metallic locating wire for all buried PVC pipe. Wire must daylight at each fitting in accordance with City Standards. C. Pipe Laying in Trenches: 1. Inspect pipe and accessories for defects before lowering into trench. 2. Repair or replace any defective, damaged, or unsound pipe. 3. Remove all foreign matter and dirt from the inside of pipe before laying. 4. Carefully lower pipe, fittings, valves, and accessories into the trench with derricks, ropes, and other suitable equipment to prevent damage. 5. Do not dump or drop pipe or accessories into the trench. 6. Lay to lines and grades indicated on the Drawings and specified. a. Closely joint to form a smooth flow line. b. Immediately before placing pipe, check bedding for firmness and uniformity of surface. c. Minimum length of pipe that can be used without exceeding the allowable curvature of pipe shall be determined. d. Maximum curvature of pipe as recommended by the manufacturer. e. Deflection at joint: As recommended by the manufacturer. f. If grade is not shown on Drawings, install pipe at smooth grade between elevations shown to allow drainage of pipe. 7. Utilize implements, tools, and facilities recommended by the manufacturer. 8. Keep inside of pipe clean during and after laying. 9. Close all open ends with watertight expandable pipe plugs for potable water application: a. At the end of each day s operations. b. Whenever pipe ends are left unattended. c. Deposit adequate backfill on pipe to prevent flotation. d. Do not use wood, burlap or other similar temporary plugs. 10. Remove and re-lay any pipe which has floated. 11. Do not lay pipe when: D. Jointing: a. There is water in the trench. b. Trench conditions are unsuitable. c. Weather conditions are unsuitable. 1. Assemble in accordance with the manufacturer s instructions

5 2. Wipe gasket and gasket seat clean before inserting gasket. 3. Lubricate the gasket and the outside of the clean pipe end. 4. Utilize an assembly tool as recommended by the manufacturer to center the sleeve over the pipe end. 5. Force the pipe into the collar. 6. Check gasket location after assembly with a suitable gauge. E. Fittings: a. Pipe shall be marked with a stab depth line to allow visual confirmation of correct installation. b. Gasket locations to be the distance from the sleeve end recommended by the coupling manufacturer for their full circumference. c. If not within the required limits, disassemble and reassemble the joint. 1. Install utilizing standard methods. 2. Lower into trench with rope, cable, chain or other means to prevent damage. 3. Attach rope, cable or chain around the exterior of fittings. Do not attach through the interior of fitting. 4. Carefully connect to pipe or other facility. 5. Check joint to ensure a sound and proper joint. F. Encasement: 1. Provide as indicated on the Drawings or as directed by the Resident Engineer. 2. Suitably support and block pipe and anchor against flotation. G. Corrosion Control: 1. Coat all steel clamp rods, bolts, fittings and other metal accessories used in anchorages or joint harness subject to submergence or contact with the earth and not concrete encased. 2. Apply two (2) coats of coal tar paint to clean, dry metal surfaces. 3. Allow the first coat to dry and harden before applying the second coat. H. Polyethylene Field wrap of all valves, fittings, joints, and connections: 1. Wrap all buried valves, flanges, couplings, fittings, joints and other mechanical pipe connections in two layers of polyethylene encasement per AWWA C105. Extend layers of polyethylene to overlap cement mortar coating (where applicable) and tape edges of polyethylene wrap with at least two circular wraps of PVC tape. I. Direct tapping of PVC not permitted. Saddles are required

6 3.04 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL A. Pressure Test: 1. Test in accordance with AWWA C605 as modified herein. 2. Provide all tools, pumps, fill points, gages, meters, temporary valves and bulkheads, bracing and other equipment required for testing. 3. Conduct the test with the trench completely backfilled. 4. Procedure: 3.05 Disinfection a. Test line in sections of 2,500 feet or less. b. Fill with water and allow to stand under slight pressure for at least 24 hours. c. Expel all air from line. d. Inspect for leakage and repair any leaks. e. Raise the pressure to 220 psi for water mains or 50 psi for drain conduits and hold by water addition for at least 1 hour. f. Allow line to stand for 1 hour without water addition and accurately record the quantity required. 5. If the quantity of water added to the line exceeds the value in Table 3 of AWWA C605, or should leaks otherwise be noted, locate the leaks, rework the line and retest. A. Disinfect all water piping per the requirements of Section 11201, Systems Disinfection and VOC Testing. B. Pipe will be flushed at 5 feet per second for three pipe volumes prior to disinfection. **END OF SECTION**
