1 Definitin and Meaning Lessn Plan Students use Wrds With Friends (WWF) EDU t determine r clarify the meaning f wrds. Primary Objective Students will be able t determine r clarify the meaning f wrds by (1) cnsulting the dictinary feature in WWF EDU, and (2) identifying the best usage f wrds in the Pwer Wrd Bnus. Secndary Objective Students will use the dictinary feature t understand prnunciatin and the meanings f these wrds. 2 PREPARATION 1. Give students the pprtunity t play WWF EDU befre this lessn. Recmmended practice time: at least 1 hur ver a multi-day perid r 3 5 game play sessins. 2. Give students the pprtunity t cnsult reference materials t determine the definitin/meaning f unknwn wrds befre this lessn (i.e., this lessn shuld nt be the first time that they reference a dictinary tl). 3. Cnsider whether t teach this lessn in a large grup r a series f small grups, depending n the resurces that are available in yur classrm (e.g., if yu d nt have a full set f student cmputers t facilitate a full-grup lessn, this lessn may be taught in a series f small grups while ther students are engaged in centers). 4. (Optinal) Pair r grup students tgether fr practice with game bard examples and/r game play. PROCEDURE 1. Intrductin Set the stage and activate existing knwledge (8 minutes) SAY: Tday we will be wrking t develp ur skills with using the dictinary as a reference tl and using cntext clues t determine wrds meanings. Remind students f resurces in the rm such as print dictinaries, thesaurus, etc. SAY: Let s review sme recgnizable features f dictinaries: SAY: They tend t list wrds in alphabetical rder. SAY: They tend t include infrmatin abut hw wrds are prnunced, their part(s) f speech, their rigin, their variatins, and their definitins. SAY: Definitins tend t be rdered based n the frequency f their use. SAY: The dictinary feature in WWF EDU can serve as a reference tl fr yu when yu re playing the game. SAY: Yu dn t need t use the dictinary fr every wrd, but it can be a useful tl when yu want t see the definitin f an unfamiliar wrd, r clarify the meaning f a wrd that yu re nt cnfident yu knw well. Yu might even see that sme secndary meanings f familiar wrds that yu didn t knw befre! SAY: Once yu knw the definitin f a wrd, it desn t necessarily mean that yu will yu be able t understand it s meaning in cntext. This is a challenge fr all readers, s it s imprtant t seize pprtunities t try t identify the meaning f a wrd based n its usage as well. WWF EDU prvides this pprtunity every time yu play a Pwer Wrd! 3 SAY: After yu play a Pwer Wrd, yu see a Pwer Wrd Bnus! The Bnus gives yu three sentences with the Pwer Wrd, and yu need t try t figure ut which ne uses the wrd crrectly. This type f challenge serves t help yu exercise yur reading muscle and build academic vcabulary. Really strategic WWF EDU players will remember that the dictinary feature is available while yu play the Pwer Wrd Bnus and yu might chse t use it as a resurce if yu get stuck! SAY: Befre we dive int WWF EDU game play tday, let s practice hw t use the game s dictinary feature and take n the Pwer Wrd Bnus challenge tgether. (Optinal, additinal 5 10 minutes) Prvide students with time t practice using the dictinary feature apart frm game play. (One des nt need t be playing WWF EDU in rder t access the game s dictinary feature.) Then, give students the pprtunity t extend this practice t their wn game bards. Help them identify game bards in their Mves List that they might use; they can chse t use nging game bards (under Yur Mve r Their Mve ) r recently Cmpleted game bards. Encurage students t cllabrate with a partner r in small grups t practice using the dictinary feature t enhance their knwledge f wrds n the bard. Circulate arund the rm t supprt this practice. Set the intentin fr game play (2 minutes) SAY: Tday, while we play WWF EDU, I want yu t seize all pprtunities t use the dictinary feature and play Pwer Wrds. Please write dwn at least tw full definitins f wrds yu play in yur ntebk/digital ntebk. We will be using these wrds fr a number f fun activities as we cntinue t use WWFEDU in ur classrm. As always, I encurage yu t lk fr the green light n the Pwer Wrd list that indicates that there is a Pwer Wrd yu can play; seize thse pprtunities t grw yur academic vcabulary and scre sme majr pints! Please als write dwn any Pwer Wrds yu play alng with their definitins/meanings. Take screen shts f any Pwer Wrd Bnus challenges that yu encunter, because this will allw us t review them tgether at the end f the game play sessin tday. 2. Practice/Play time (10 minutes) Circulate arund the rm as students play WWF EDU, fcusing n using the dictinary feature and playing Pwer Wrds. Encurage, trublesht, and supprt students as they wrk/play. Publicly praise students when yu see them playing challenging, r unique wrds, and Pwer Wrds. 4 3. Clsure (10 minutes) Lead students in a discussin that sums up the game play experience, nting what wrds students chse t play and define, alng with Pwer Wrds. Discuss any tricky spelling mments and help students cnnect wrds played t their meanings by reviewing hw they utilized the dictinary feature. Review any Pwer Wrds Bnus challenges that students might have encuntered and captured. Help students make a cnnectin between hw using reference tls and shwing a willingness t take n challenges helps us in game play, and, mre imprtantly, hw these behavirs help us becme strnger readers and writers. EXTENSIONS AND VARIATIONS Use these ideas t further engage students in activities aligned t the learning bjectives f this lessn. Fr thse f yu wh may be searching fr ways t prvide mre student-led activities in yur classrm, we ve labeled the activities that can be easily led by students with #StudentLed. Have students challenge each ther with wrds and their definitins. One way is t break students int pairs r small grups. Half f each grup takes a wrd and creates its wn Pwer Wrd style tri f sentences (see bard example belw, clue ), nly ne f which will be the crrect ne. Have the ther grup guess, and then switch rles. This will help reinfrce the meanings f wrds and encurages students t cntinue t use the dictinary tl. #StudentLed Have students keep track f their predictins f meanings f unknwn wrds using a wrksheet. Encurage students t use the tiles available t them t explre pssible wrds that they might be able t spell.
