1 UBD-Stage 1 World History I 9 th grade Established Goals: (Adapted from the Virginia Standards of Learning STANDARD WHI.12C and Standards of Learning 9.2 for Health/PE/Driver s Ed) The student will demonstrate knowledge of the social, economic, political and technological changes in the late medieval period by identifying characteristics and patterns of crisis and recovery related to the Black Death (Bubonic plague) The student will analyze and evaluate the relationship among health behaviors, disease prevention and control, and comprehensive wellness in a person s life State Standard Technology Communication Tools C/T and State Technology Standard Problem-solving and Decision making Tools C/T ISTE Standard 2: Communication and Collaboration and ISTE Standard 4.d use multiple processes and diverse perspectives to explore alternate solutions What Understandings are Required? (Adapted from the Virginia Standards of Learning-- STANDARD WHI.12C and Standards of Learning 9.2 for Health/PE/Driver s Ed) The Students will understand that the advancement of hygiene and technology led to the prevention and cure of disease The Students will understand the Black Death had a profound impact on the population of Asia and later decimated the population of much of Europe What Essential Questions Will Be Considered? How did the Black Death change the social, economic, political, and social institutions in much of Europe? What Key Knowledge and Skills Will Students Acquire as a Result of this Unit? Knowledge Students will understand the impact of the Black Death including the following: o Decline in Population o Scarcity of labor o Towns freed from feudal obligations o Decline of church influence o Disruption of trade The Student will be able to define a communicable diseases as an illness caused by a pathogen or germ
2 Identify precautions you can take to prevent diseases o Personal hygiene o Avoiding people with the disease o Maintain good health through proper nutrition and adequate rest What are the signs and symptoms of the Black Death? How did people know they had it? How and where did the Black Death originate? How was it spread? Skills Use maps, globes, artifacts, and pictures to analyze the physical and cultural landscape of the world and interpret the past Analyze trends in human migration and cultural interaction from prehistory.
3 Stage 2 Performance Task Your task is to create a pamphlet outlining how to prevent the spread of the Bubonic Plague in your community. You are a local clergy member who is trying to regain membership for your church. The target audience is anyone seeking to prevent the spread of this infectious disease. The challenge involves dealing with a very religious community where many blame the plague on the wickedness of people and view this as a punishment from God. You need to develop a pamphlet to educate the masses about the spread of this disease so that they will identify the real reason it has come to your community. Your performance needs to be extremely convincing and include multiple pictures and graphics. Remember you are trying to save lives!! Other Evidence Quizzes 2 quizzes, one on signs and symptoms of the Black Death and another quiz on the plague s impact in Europe Map Activity Students will complete a map demonstrating the spread of the plague throughout Asia and Europe, including major areas hit by the plague In Class Writing Assignments One page essay on how the plague spread throughout Europe and how it was eventually controlled and maintained Student Self-Assessment and Reflection Final Journal Entry is a reflection Blog or Vlog where students assume the role of a physician or a historian writing about the plague they will be guided by the following questions How did Society isolate the plague and its victims? What was the average person feeling or thinking during this time period? If you were alive during this time, how do you think you would have reacted? Knowing what you know now how would you have changed history?

Go around the classroom give each student a number, 1-3, then tell the 1s to put their head down followed by the 2s. Explain to the students that the 1s and 2s are dead and that this is similar to the progress of the Black Death 4. Give the student s their in class mapping activity this will later be checked for a completion grade E, T, E2 E, T 5. Give a lesson on the Bubonic Plague: This will be presented using PowerPoint and slot notes to fill in the blanks what are the signs and symptoms? How does the disease spread form one person to another 6. Short Quiz to assess their knowledge on the disease known as the Black Death 8. After students have completed the quiz go around the room asking students to answer the questions this will serve as a valuable review 9. Give a lesson on the impact of the Black death and it s effect on the rest of Europe present this lesson using PowerPoint and slot notes for the students to follow along and fill in E, E2, R 10. Give a lesson on How can you contain and prevent disease? What do we know now that we didn t know then? Why did the plague stop in Europe? present this lesson using PowerPoint and giving students slot notes to fill in and follow along E

They will then have to decide on the most important cause of the spread of this disease and write a one page writing assignment defending this belief 12. Have them get in groups to peer review each other s work 13. Quiz on the impacts of the black plague and how is it prevented 14. Students will present their pamphlet project 15.
