1 INFO1003 Foundations of Information Technology Unit of Study Outline Semester 1, Introduction Information technologies (IT) and systems have emerged as the primary platform to support communication, collaboration, research, decision making, and problem solving in contemporary organisations. The essential necessity for all university students to acquire the fundamental knowledge and skills for applying IT effectively for a wide range of tasks is widely recognised. Foundations of Information Technology (INFO1003) is an introductory unit of study which prepares students from any academic discipline to develop the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to be competent in the use of information technology for solving a variety of problems. The main focus of this unit is on modelling and problem solving through the effective use of using IT. Students will learn how to navigate independently to solve their problems on their own, and to be capable of fully applying the power of IT tools in the service of their goals in their own domains while not losing sight of the fundamental concepts of computing. Students are taught core skills related to general purpose computing involving a range of software tools such as spreadsheets, database management systems, internet search engine, HTML, and JavaScript. Students will undertake practical tasks including authoring an interactive website using HTML, JavaScript and AJAX and building a small-scale application for managing information. In addition, the course will address the many social, ethical, and intellectual property issues arising from the wide-spread use of information technology in our society. 2. Objectives Students who successfully complete this unit will have: 1. Understanding of modern concepts, principles and practical approaches to using information technology based on substantial realistic context 2. Ability to analyse and solve problems through designing and developing application by effective use of standard software packages, graphical user interfaces, internet search tools, word processor, spreadsheet, databases and HTML editor 3. Experience in teamwork, planning, communication and co-ordination 4. Ability to articulate the ethical and social impact of information and information technology 5. Ability to develop on-line application using HTML5, JavaScript and AJAX 6. Ability to develop simple conceptual data models and manage data using appropriate DBMS software 7. Ability to develop models and implementing models using tools such as Microsoft Excel 3. Unit of Study Delivery A variety of learning situations will be employed during the unit of study, including lectures, recommended reading, directed computer laboratory exercises, and assessed assignments. To benefit fully from this unit it is necessary to participate fully in all aspects of the unit of study. INFO1003 (Sem1, 2014) 1 of 6

2 4. Expectations 1. Students are expected to attend the lecture, a 2-hour laboratory class and, for some, workshop each week. You are expected to spend roughly 12 hours per week to study this unit, including the six hours of scheduled class times. 2. Students are expected to undertake recommended reading, to carry out tutorial exercises and laboratory tasks. Students also need to put in the extra time mentioned above, beyond the scheduled classes, to complete their work. 3. Students are expected to be able to work independently and to make effective use of a range of resources including the library, the Internet and relevant on-line help facilities. 4. Students are expected to check their progressive results regularly through elearning using their unikey login. Any errors or omissions must be reported to the unit coordinator, with appropriate evidence, as soon as possible. Marks will be considered to have been confirmed ten days after being published and will not subsequently be altered. 5. Students are expected to visit the unit website elearning in a weekly basis, to view lab and tutorial instructions, and to check for announcements. 5. Schedule o ALL lectures and labs start in Week 1. o Lecture: Monday (Carslaw Lecture Theatre 373) o Workshop: Wednesday (PNR Building Learning Studio 310) o Labs: 2 hours per week. You should only go to your allocated lab session. Check your own timetable. 6. Assessment Package The unit of study will be assessed by means of the following components: Component Due % of Final Grade Online quizzes (home) week 4,6,8,10,12 5 Quiz 1 (lab) week 7 10 Quiz 2 (lab) week Group Project: Web Assignment (lab) week 5, 8, = 25 Written examination (two hours) 50 50% of the raw final mark (rawfinalmark) calculation comes from the assessments during the semester, whereas the other half comes from the examination (exmark), however, the final mark (finalmark) is capped at exmark+10. Here are some scenarios to help your understanding: Case assessmark exmark exmark+10 rawfinalmark finalmark Grade D P CR * F * F F * It is a policy of the School of Information Technologies that in order to pass this unit, a student must achieve at least 40% in the written examination as well as in the other components of assessment together. A student must also achieve an overall final mark of 50 or more. Any student not meeting these requirements can achieve a maximum mark of no more than 45. INFO1003 (Sem1, 2014) 2 of 6

3 7. Details of Assessment Components Late work: In the interests of fairness to all students, the School of Information Technologies policy states that late work cannot be accepted. In exceptional cases late work must be submitted directly to the unit of study coordinator accompanied by an application for Special Consideration as outlined on the School of Information Technologies Website. Quizzes and Group Project There will be 1 group project and two quizzes during the course. These two assessments will be worth 40% of the final mark. For the group project presentation, a student must be present throughout that whole lab session in order to get the group mark. Students in the same group may receive different marks depending upon their contributions to the project. Participation: involvement in tutorial and practical tasks Attendance, participation and completion of the exercises in the labs and tutorials are very important. You must work actively in all the computer labs. Every week you have a series of lab units to complete. Your tutor will be keeping track of your progress through the semester and your participation based on your attendance. INFO1003 requires a minimum attendance of 80% at the labs. Attendance will be kept. Failure to meet the minimum attendance requirements will result in an immediate failure. Late attendance will not be counted. Written Examination The written examination will be drawn from all aspects of the unit of study. It will test the candidates ability to discuss issues critically and to apply the knowledge learnt during the course them to specific situations. Duration of the examination will be two hours. 8. 4 10. Course Web Page For most recent information on this course, lecture slides, instructions for tutorials and lab tasks, exercises etc. make a visit at least once per week to elearning. Progressive marks will be released throughout semester via elearning. Be sure to check the message board before sending an to either the tutor or lecturer. If you require an answer that is more than 3 lines of text, please visit the lecturer during the consultation hours (Monday 12-1pm) or make an appointment. 11. Computer Lab Location The computer labs for INFO1003 will be held in School of IT building. There are five computer labs on the 1 st floor. Each lab has 20 (or 30) PC computers. These computer labs will generally be open from 9AM to 9PM Monday to Friday. With your School of IT Account you can also access the computer labs in the School of IT building and Madsen Building. 12. Your Learning Responsibility At the beginning of the lab, your tutor will explain the purpose and learning objectives. Your tutor will act primarily as a facilitator and troubleshooting expert. They will provide instruction with some units, but the majority of the labs are designed to be self-paced. It is your responsibility to work through and complete the lab units. Your tutor is here to help, and please feel free to ask them any questions especially if the task is ambiguous. At the same time we encourage you to make reasonable attempt at completing a task before asking your tutor for help. Try using the HELP command or experiment with software. The more tasks you can complete on your own, the more confidence you will develop. One of the goals of this course is to develop your skills and confidence to become an independent learner and computer end user. INFO1003 (Sem1, 2014) 4 of 6

5 IMPORTANT: Policy relating to Academic Dishonesty and Plagiarism. The School of Information Technologies views all forms of academic dishonesty, including plagiarism and recycling, very seriously. Plagiarism means presenting another person s ideas, findings or work as one s own by copying or reproducing them without due acknowledgement of the source. Recycling means the submission for assessment of one s own work, or of work which is substantially the same, which has previously been counted towards the satisfactory completion of another unit of study, and credited towards a university degree, and where the examiner has not been informed that the student has already received credit for that work. Students who submit work containing significant portions that have been copied from other sources, including published works, the internet, existing programs, work previously submitted for other awards or assessments, or the work of other students, without proper acknowledgement will be penalised. Decisions as to the penalty may include: (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) (f) (g) counselling the student; issuing a written warning; requiring the student to resubmit the work for assessment; or to undertake other remedial work; requiring the student to undertake another form of assessment in lieu of the assignment in question, such as an unseen examination; applying a fail grade to the work, or part thereof, submitted for assessment; applying a fail grade overall in the unit of study; or referring the matter to the Registrar if the head of school considers there has been a breach of the University s standards of academic honesty and the student continues in a denial, or, following the interview, the head of school considers that failing the unit of study is insufficient to deal with the matter. In assessing a piece of submitted work, the School of IT may reproduce it entirely, may provide a copy to another member of faculty, and/or communicate a copy of this assignment to a plagiarism checking service (e.g. Turn-it-in) or in-house computer program, and that a copy of the assignment may be maintained by the service or the School of IT for the purpose of future plagiarism checking. Where there is doubt about which portions of work are contributed by a particular student he/she may be required to demonstrate knowledge of the relevant material by answering oral questions or by undertaking supplementary work, either written or in the laboratory, in order to arrive at the final assessment mark.
