(accessible through Blackboard Course Site) Der Fall Schlachter, Langenscheidt Goals: German 122 is the last course in the sequence for beginning students of German (prerequisite: successful completion of GER 110, 121, or placement test score). All four foreign language skills (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) will be addressed to help you acquire a reasonable level of proficiency in the German language. With your active participation and cooperation, this course will help you to acquire enough proficiency in the language to participate in conversations with speakers of German. You will learn how to function in a German-speaking environment and to express yourself on a number of topics with a reasonable degree of accuracy. enable you to understand speakers of German on topics beyond basic survival needs, such as leisure-time activities, interests, personal history, etc. help you acquire reading strategies in German enabling you to understand and analyze different kinds of texts with limited dictionary use. enable you to write short messages, postcards, letters, summaries, take notes, compose coherent paragraphs dealing with everyday topics and issues. provide you with basic grammatical and syntactic structures and patterns, which underlie all communication in the language. inform you about various aspects of the culture in German-speaking countries. Attendance and participation: Regular attendance and active participation are mandatory and of utmost importance to any foreign language learning experience. Your contributions to class, their quality, and the level of your participation will be graded as either excellent (100%), satisfactory (80%), unsatisfactory (50%), or absent (0%) each day of class. The average of these assessments will be your participation grade for the course. More than three unexcused absences will result in a grade penalty; your participation grade will be lowered by 10% for each additional absence. After 10 absences you will fail the course because you will have missed 25% of the class. There are absolutely no make-up tests or quizzes given; a missed quiz or test will be recorded as a 0%. Exceptions are only made for documented illness, official university business, or major religious holidays. However, it remains your responsibility to contact the instructor ahead of time (in case of severe illness on the day class is missed) and to provide sufficient documentation. Incompletes will not be given under any circumstances.

2 G122 Spring2006 / Page 2 Grading: Homework 10% Journals 10% Participation and contributions to class 10% Quizzes and wikis 15% 4 Chapter Tests 25% 1 Interview 5% Culture Presentation 5% Exit Exam 20% (Interview 5%; Reading 5 %; Listening 5 %; Writing 5%) Grades are cumulative and based on a 100% maximum per assignment and per category; final grades will be assigned according to the following scale: %=A;89-87%=B+;86-80%=B;79-77=C+;76-70=C;69-68=D+;67-65=D;64 and below= F. You must achieve an average grade of at least 64% in each category of the exit exam to pass the course. To determine if you qualify, please contact the Office of Disability Services at to make arrangements. If they certify your needs, your instructor will work with you to make appropriate arrangements. Policy on Scholastic Integrity: Students who do not comply with University rules on scholastic integrity are subject to disciplinary penalties, including the possibility of failure in the course and/or dismissal from the University. Since dishonesty harms the individual, all students and the integrity of the University, policies on scholastic dishonesty will be strictly enforced. For further information, visit the Rule of Academic Responsibility website at This includes using an online translator or outside assistance, other than the German tutoring center, to help you with your essays/journals or homework. If your instructor suspects that you have used an online translator or have received outside help, you will receive an automatic zero on the assignment and will be subject to other disciplinary penalties. Exit Exam: To pass this course and to satisfy the foreign language requirement, you must achieve a passing grade (64% and more) on all four parts of the exit exam and demonstrate basic proficiency in the four language skills (listening, reading, writing, and speaking). Should you fail one or more parts of the exit exam, your instructor will arrange for you to retake these parts during finals week. Homework: Your instructor will assign daily homework assignments for each chapter of Deutsch Na klar! Some of these assignments may come from the workbook, lab manual, or textbook and others may be assignments your instructor has designed. For extra practice you should complete the corresponding Workbook and LabManual exercises (audiofiles are accessible through the link called Hörverständnis on the Blackboard website for this course). Complete an activity, then check the answer key and correct your answers. Homework will be graded as satisfactory only if handed in on time, complete and, appropriately corrected when applicable. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out your homework assignment before you return to class. Wikis: While you are reading Der Fall Schlachter you will be required to maintain a wiki with 3 of your classmates. In preparation for each class day that you will be discussing the text, you and your group members should post on the wiki in the categories of characters, plot, vocabulary, and predictions. Each of you will be responsible for one category and each person should write at least 5 sentences per wiki assignment and one of these sentences should be false. You will be graded on both content and accuracy. During your class discussion of the wiki, other groups will read your group s wiki and try to figure out which statements are false. Tagebuch (Journal): At the end of chapters 11 and 13 in your workbook, you are asked to write a journal entry. Each contribution must be at least 1 page, typed, double-spaced in Times New Roman and contain newly acquired vocabulary and grammatical structures. As with most other assignments, creativity is highly valued, feel free to add pictures, drawings, etc, but submit only quality work. Submissions with unreasonable amounts of avoidable mistakes or otherwise sloppy work will not be accepted. Your instructor will mark mistakes according to the attached list of correction symbols. Correct your entries as indicated and hand in your second draft, attached to your first draft, with your next assignment. Only then will you receive a grade for your entry; the sum of these grades will be your grade in the journal category.

3 G122 Spring2006 / Page 3 Topic 1: Write a letter to a German company applying for an internship in Germany. Include your past work experience that qualifies you for this internship (present perfect) and mention anything else that qualifies you for the job. You should also include a resume (Lebenslauf) with your letter. Topic 2: Describe your relationship with the media. What newspapers and magazines do you read? What shows do you watch on TV? What are your favorite shows? Why? Where do you get most of your information? From , Internet, textbooks, news in the radio or TV, newspapers, magazines? What do you think of the mass media? If you were the CEO of ABC, CBS, NBC, or FOX, how would you change the station and/or television shows? (subjunctive) Chapter Tests: You should not have to learn anything new the night before a test, rather begin a review a couple of days before the test, covering the exercises done in class and in your workbook. Quizzes: Learn vocabulary as it is practiced and presented in each chapter, try to keep your acquisition in context! Use flashcards or any other method that works for you. Be sure to learn the gender and plural of nouns, practice verb conjugations and pay attention to idiomatic expressions. Be prepared for other quizzes throughout the semester in addition to the announced vocabulary quizzes. Do not wait until the night before the quiz! Language Lab (Ted Mimms Foreign Language Learning Center): 1 st floor of Humanities Classroom Building. Monday - Thursday: 8am - 7pm, Friday: 8am-5pm, The Culture Presentation During the course of the semester, you will complete a culture project IN GERMAN that allows you to focus in depth on a specific topic about the cultures of the German-speaking countries Art, History, Literature, Music, Philosophy, Architecture, Science - (Austria, Germany, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, or Switzerland). You will collaborate with one of your classmates on this project, which is worth 50 points, and consists of four sub-components: Topic: Choose an area of interest to you about the current societies and cultures of the German-speaking countries. Do a brief Internet or library search, write down what your presentation will focus on (e.g., TOPIC: LITERATURE Romanticism). Give some detail about your presentation, and define which partner will research & present which parts of your selected topic. Turn in ONE TYPEWRITTEN PAGE. (5 points) Annotated Bibliography: Write an annotated bibliography on 3 sources with your teammates. Select three sources that discuss your selected topic and summarize each source in 3-4 sentences, listing its key ideas. Attach a complete list of references (i.e., author, title of publication or Internet address, date of publication, publisher or organization that published the Internet site). You must have at least two different types of sources; for example, you may use two Internet articles, but then your third source must be a different type of source (e.g., German or English language magazine/newspaper articles, an original German text, etc.). Feel free to interview native speakers about their interpretation of an historical event or the significance of a particular artistic movement. Use Times New Roman or Courier fonts, size 12, with 1inch margins. (10 points) In-Class PowerPoint Presentation: A week before your class presentation, give your instructor an outline of your presentation so s/he can give you feedback about your proposed content, organization and length. You will have to give a presentation based on your outline. In your outline, you should include at least 3 questions that you will pose at the end of your presentation to facilitate discussion. The presentation (not including discussion time) should be 5-8 minutes long. The presentation should be given using PowerPoint. (20 points) Self-Review and Discussion of Presentations: On the last day of classes, you should turn in a 1-2 page discussion of the culture presentations. (15 points) Please submit: a) four paragraphs about four different presentations you heard, describing briefly what you learned from them that was new information for you (i.e., one paragraph per presentation) b) a paragraph about how you will be able to use the knowledge you have gained from this project in other areas of your studies or during your travels or work abroad.
