Subject Support (Stage 1) NEW College Formal Intervention Procedures When a teacher recognises that a student is finding a subject difficult and needs extra support or when a student is failing to complete work to a satisfactory standard / meet deadlines. Subject teacher places the student on Subject Support. Student flagged up on Firefly as being on Subject Support. Areas for improvement are identified and targets set. Targets are recorded on Firefly. Teaching staff decide the time period. If no improvement, student is referred to HoD who monitors the student closely again for a set period. All actions / interventions during this period to be recorded on Firefly. A review meeting should then take place Parents / carers may be invited into college, but this is not mandatory. What if this doesn t work? The Subject Support period may be extended, which should be recorded in Firefly. The Progress Tutor should be informed and a decision will be made as to whether the student should move to the second stage of intervention: Progress Tutor Support. If the problems are only in one subject, in most cases the HoD should continue with the necessary interventions and increase the length of the subject support.

Progress Tutor Support (Stage 2) When a student is having difficulties in more than one subject or when a Progress Tutor is satisfied that all reasonable strategies have been employed by a teacher and HOD and the student has not responded satisfactorily. Progress Tutor places the student on Progress Tutor Support. Student flagged up on Firefly as being on Progress Tutor Support. Area(s) for improvement are identified and targets set. Targets are recorded on Firefly. Progress Tutor will work with the student and teachers for a minimum of four weeks. Subject teachers will also continue to provide support/interventions. All actions / interventions during this period to be recorded on Firefly (Subject teachers and Progress Tutor). A review meeting would normally take place after four weeks. Parents / carers may be invited into college, but this is not mandatory. A subject teacher or HoD may request Progress Tutor Support. The Progress Tutor may direct additional interventions at subject level or place the student on Progress Tutor Support. The Progress Tutor may wish to consult with his/her SPT. What if this doesn t work? The Progress Tutor Support period may be extended, which should be recorded in Firefly. The SPT should be informed. A decision will be made as to whether the student should move to the third stage of intervention: SPT Agreement.

SPT Agreement (Stage 3) When the SPT (Senior Progress Tutor) is satisfied that all reasonable strategies and interventions have been employed by teachers, HODs and the Progress Tutor to get the student back on track. A formal meeting takes place between the student and SPT. Student is flagged up on Firefly as being on a SPT Agreement. The SPT sets out the targets which a student must now agree to in order to demonstrate his / her commitment to studying at NEW College. The SPT will work with the student for a minimum of four weeks. All targets, actions / interventions during this period to be recorded on Firefly. A review meeting would normally take place after four weeks, but might be brought forward, depending upon the circumstances. Parents / carers may be invited into college, but this is not mandatory. A formal letter may be posted to parents/carers outlining the targets agreed by the student if no telephone contact has been made. The Progress Tutor will recommend an escalation to the SPT Agreement to their SPT. The SPT may direct additional interventions at Progress Tutor level. The SPT may place the student on a SPT Agreement. If the student fails to adequately engage with the SPT Agreement, the SPT Agreement may be extended or the student may be escalated to an Exclusion Contract.

VP Exclusion Contract (Stage 4) When the VP is satisfied that all reasonable strategies have been employed by the SPT and the student has not responded satisfactorily. A formal meeting takes place laying out the terms and conditions which must be met for a student to stay in College. The attendance of a parent / carer is mandatory. Student is flagged up on Firefly as being on a VP Exclusion Contract. VP will monitor the student for a minimum of four weeks. Failure to comply with the terms of the contract will result in a temporary exclusion. (Length to be decided by the VP). The student must now earn back his/her right to remain within the College. SPTs may recommend an Exclusion Contract to the Vice Principal. The Vice Principal may direct additional interventions at the SPT Agreement stage or place a student on a VP Exclusion Contract. Temporary Exclusion. Permanent Exclusion.

Principal Permanent Exclusion Notification (Stage 5) After a student has been temporarily excluded. The Vice Principal will inform the Principal that the student has been temporarily excluded and organise a panel meeting with the student, parents/carers, Vice Principal and Principal. This is an official notification that the student will be immediately and permanently excluded from the College if the student does not wholly adhere to every requirement set out. The student is given an official, final warning by the Principal. Any breach of the terms set out in this contract will result in the immediate withdrawal of the student from College. This will run for a minimum of four weeks. If broken, the student is formally withdrawn from College by the Principal, and the parent(s) / carer(s) and student are notified in writing. The decision whether to permanently exclude is taken by the Principal and Vice Principal(s) when necessary. Appeals are handled by the Governing Body Permanent Exclusion.
