What is SmashUp! SmashUp! is a brand new after school badminton initiative by BADMINTON England, and backed by Sport England and the Youth Sports Trust, aimed at encouraging non sporty / semi sporty year olds to get active on a badminton court but in a highly social, relaxed session where being good at sport is not a requirement. SmashUp! offers different activities, all based on a badminton court and with a racket in hand, that allows pupils of all ability to enjoy their court time, playing amongst friends and different year groups at a pace that they set. Drop in after-school badminton What makes SmashUp! different to PE or other after school badminton clubs? SmashUp! is made up of on court activities that are focused on social aspects of the game and interaction as well as being about fun and bragging rights amongst friends rather than traditional skills development or coaching. Pupils can select which activities take place on the courts from a selection offered by BADMINTON England whilst there is a session leader (activator) on hand to inspire and motivate the pupils but not provide coaching tips. Music will also be played out within the sports hall and will feature music tracks supplied by the pupils using their own MP3, tablet or mobile phones. Pupils can also step off court for text breaks, check facebook or chat with friends if they choose without disrupting the gameplay. BADMINTON England will run regular promotions and suggest regular themes to maintain interest in the sessions. Research has shown that giving pupils the chance to build their own badminton experience, and not put the focus on sports development or skills improvement, ultimately encourages pupils to want to spend time getting active after school in their own time.
Do I get loads of new equipment and kit for the school if I sign up for SmashUp! No. BADMINTON England will be providing trained Activators with SmashUp! kit to deliver sessions in schools. Schools will have the opportunity to purchase a SmashUp! kit if they choose to deliver SmashUp! in house following training by an Activator and once they have signed up to deliver SmashUp! for 30 weeks. What is in a SmashUp! kit? Badminton Kit (16 x rackets, 4 x shuttles) Throw-down lines Giant shuttle Danger zone spots Skittles (set of 6) Blackout net screen SmashUp! net screen Game cards (set of 24) Net Icons (set of 6) Bag Posters (4) Docking station (Activator packs only) Who delivers the SmashUp! sessions? BADMINTON England is setting up a network of Activators who have the skills, knowledge and technical ability to deliver SmashUp! Activators will be self employed and encouraged by BADMINTON England to build local relationships with schools to improve session attendance and pupil enjoyment. Schools will initially be matched with an Activator who will then make contact to arrange session details.
Who can be a SmashUp! Activator? Activators may have a background in coaching but this is not essential, our minimum requirement is that they have a leadership qualification. Our focus is more on personality and knowledge of how to engage & retain young people within the sessions. Following the recruitment process Activators will be invited to join the SmashUp! network if they demonstrate strong motivation/interaction skills with the year old age group during the training days. Are SmashUp! Activators CRB checked and insured? Yes. All SmashUp! Activators have undertaken a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and are covered through our Civil Liability Insurance Policy for up to 5m. Will an Activator be assigned exclusively to my school? Activators will work within a number of schools during the week to deliver SmashUp! sessions at different local locations therefore their time is thinly spread. They may also have other coaching / volunteering commitments outside of SmashUp! that are beyond BADMINTON England s control. For this reason, the relationship between school and activator is one that BADMINTON England will introduce/facilitate but not manage. This will ensure schools stay in control of all elements of the activator employment, including costs, times, session days etc.
What are the costs of the SmashUp! sessions to schools? BADMINTON England have taken every attempt to minimise costs to participating schools however the school will incur some costs in order to deliver SmashUp! SmashUp! can be delivered by following one of 2 options: o Option 1 A BADMINTON England SmashUp! Activator delivering first 6 weeks FREE* o Option 2 6 weeks FREE* training for your own leader (staff member/ Young Leader) plus discounted SmashUp! Kit *Schools are committing to deliver 30 weeks SmashUp! Costs Option 1 Option 2 SmashUp! Activator ( 15* per session x 30 weeks) weeks FREE provision of Activator SmashUp! equipment pack** Total costs Can schools charge pupils to attend the sessions? Yes. Should schools wish to charge pupils to attend sessions they can do at their discretion. There will not be a recommended session price however supplied by BADMINTON England though research shows a nominal price of up to 50p per week could be acceptable to pupils. Is there any funding to support schools to deliver SmashUp!? Schools may be able to utilise internal funding such as the pupil premium in order to deliver sessions. There is also the opportunity to apply to external funding streams such as Sport England s, Small Grants and National Lottery s, Awards for All. To support
schools to apply for these funds we have written templates that schools can base their applications on. What benefits does SmashUp! bring to my school? The highly sociable nature of a typical SmashUp! session means that it provides an invaluable social hub for pupils across different age groups different social circles and both genders to mingle within the school hall. This helps improve: Interpersonal skills development In school discipline and behaviour Social interaction (peer to peer) Cross curricular relationships (not exclusive to sporty pupils) How does SmashUp! help achieve School outcomes? SmashUp! is set to deliver some high achieving targets in terms of participation amongst the age bracket to support our own Sport England targets, but beyond this it will support schools to deliver on their own targets, through: Increasing the number of students taking part in OSHL physical activity Appealing to a wider audience engaging them in physical activity Increasing the number of girls taking part in activity Increasing the skills of Young Leaders to enable them to facilitate SmashUp! sessions Increasing the number of students accessing sustainable routes such as Center Parcs National Schools Championships (in association with Sainsbury s School Games), England Satellite Clubs, community sport clubs etc Providing trained experts to deliver activities reducing dependency on valuable teacher time
When my school agrees to host SmashUp! sessions in the school hall, what support do we get from BADMINTON England? BADMINTON England have a dedicated schools development team behind SmashUp! and other school badminton related initiatives. Agreeing to run weekly SmashUp! sessions in your sports hall, will see you enjoy: Quality assured delivery of a National Governing Body initiative backed by Sport England and Youth Sports Trust Access to a quality assured SmashUp! Activator who has undergone, rigorous recruitment, selection and training process and are equipped to deliver sessions Access to a support team on the end of a telephone during working week hours to handle your enquiries or queries Talent ID to help build relationships with local badminton clubs and other sporting opportunities Marketing material to help promote and inspire pupils to get active and healthy When will SmashUp! be launched? We are currently in the process of signing schools to deliver SmashUp! ready for its nationwide launch in September The aim is to have schools delivering within 4 weeks of the launch. Is it a short term thing, such as a 6 to 8 -week course like Sportivate? No. SmashUp! is one of BADMINTON England s long term initiatives with significant 7-figure funding support granted by Sport England to run for the next 4 years. Schools will sign up to run sessions every week for a min of 30 school weeks, excluding holidays and breaks in the school term calendar.
What research have you done that tells you this is what pupils want? Over the last 6-8 months, BADMINTON England have researched this marketplace and gathered intelligence from a host of sources to form the SmashUp! initiative and sessions plans. Sources such as the Youth Sports Trust, leading youth marketing agencies, key stakeholders and in-school focus groups have been explored to fine tune the product and the brand to ensure it matches the needs of the year old audience. What does my school need to do to get involved with SmashUp! The first thing to do to is express your interest to be part of the programme at Filling out this form will help us to source the best local options in way of activator. We will then contact each school with a simple, formal agreement in writing for schools to sign which will form the partnership agreement between BADMINTON England and the school. This document will confirm that you will host sessions for min 30 weeks per year and also lay out the commitments you can expect from BADMINTON England. Does SmashUp! replace any existing badminton we are running? SmashUp! we believe is a tool to engage those who wouldn t normally take part in physical activity and therefore offers a new opportunity for schools to provide an activity that will meet their needs. We would therefore encourage the delivery of SmashUp! as a school s primary focus however it can be run in addition to existing sessions, as we would see this reaching a different target audience.
When can SmashUp! be delivered? SmashUp! can be delivered any time that is outside of curriculum time, meaning that sessions can be run, before school, afterschool or during lunchtime. SmashUp! must be delivered for a minimum of 1hr per week but this could take the form of 2 x 30min sessions and of course schools are able to deliver more than 1hr per week as well. What marketing material will schools get? Once an Activator and School have confirmed delivery details the Activator will provide posters for the school to advertise their session. If a school is providing their own staff member/ young leader to deliver SmashUp! then they will receive posters when they purchase their SmashUp! kit How long does the partnership agreement last? Schools are signing up to delivering 30 weeks either through the deployment of a SmashUp! Activator or through the purchasing of a SmashUp! kit and delivering the sessions themselves via a staff member / young leader Does SmashUp! involve coaching? No, SmashUp! is an informal, socialable session of badminton where pupils hold rackets and hit shuttles but this isn t the focus of the session. The main objective is to have fun, rather than focus on specific skill development. How do we recruit a SmashUp! Activator? Schools who sign up to SmashUp! will be matched with an Activator in the first instance. Contact details will then be shared with each party in order for them to agree arrangements for delivery including the Activators fee. If an
arrangement is not able to be confirmed then schools can contact either the SST or Development team to identify alternative Activators. How is an Activator paid? Activators are self employed and therefore will agree payment details with the schools directly. This will include payment fee, frequency of payment and payment method.
