2 NEWS RELEASE Perennial launches legacy campaign at RHS Flower Show Tatton Park Perennial s show garden at the RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park marks the launch of a new legacy fundraising campaign, highlighting how vital gifts in wills are to the charity. Sponsored by Glendale and designed by Gardening World Cup 2014 Best in Show winner Paul Hervey- Brookes, the Perennial Legacy Garden brings together a team from across the horticulture industry, working together to show support for their trade charity. The garden aims to inspire people to think about their own legacy and the difference their help can make to the lives of others. Perennial has a long history of helping horticulturists in 1839, the custodians of Britain s great estates came together to start pensions for their sick, injured and elderly gardeners. Perennial was born and today is the UK s only charity dedicated to helping people who work in horticulture, and their families, when times get tough. Reflecting this heritage, the show garden is based on elements of a large English country estate, featuring long herbaceous borders, a pavilion and a separate walled working garden with gardener s bothy and nursery beds. The planting palette is a rich tapestry of traditional and contemporary herbaceous perennials, taking its inspiration from long mixed borders such as those at Arley Hall and Upton House. A large proportion of Perennial s work is funded by the generosity of those who remember Perennial in their will. Legacy donations make up over half of Perennial s voluntary income, playing a vital role in ensuring the charity is able to continue providing support for those who have nowhere else to turn. Anita Bates, Director of Marketing and Development at Perennial says: Perennial was established by the owners of the country houses of Great Britain to look after the gardeners who worked tirelessly to plant and maintain the estate gardens. Our show garden reflects that tradition of support and we hope it will highlight our continued need for legacy income in order to help all those who work in the UK s horticultural community today. Paul has done a fantastic job in creating a celebration of this tradition and a garden that is as inspirational today as it would have been in the 19 th Century. The garden is a huge team effort bringing together a top designer, a great sponsor, quality suppliers and landscapers. It will also bring home why it is in the interest of everyone working in this industry that Perennial is here, to provide a safety net if ever they should need it. But it s not just horticulturists that support Perennial. We have a long history of help from garden- loving members of the public, many of whom have chosen to leave us a gift in their will to help continue our work. More/
3 2/ Andy Corcoran, Managing Director at Glendale, says: Glendale is committed in its support for Perennial and it s a real pleasure to make our mark on this wonderful show garden at the RHS Flower Show Tatton Park. Our support involves the donation of 2,000 plants and ten trees which will be planted in the garden, and we re looking forward to seeing them blossom as part of the finished project. Representatives from Glendale will also be working in the garden so it really will have the Glendale stamp. It s our aim to help horticulturists in need through our long- term association with Perennial and hope the Perennial Legacy Garden serves as a reminder that those who care for the green spaces of modern Britain are not always as visible as the gardens, parks, landscapes and sportsgrounds they meticulously maintain. The garden s designer, Paul Hervey- Brookes says of his only UK show garden this year: I am really pleased with how well everything has come together as we have built this garden and we hope visitors will enjoy it. I am proud to be working with Perennial and helping raise awareness of the incredible work they do to help horticulturists it is vitally important particularly for those in our industry to support the charity so it can continue to help those most in need. Further support and materials for the garden are being provided by Rolawn, Travis Perkins, Readyhedge, Bulldog Tools (Rollins Group Ltd), Wotmix cement, Bradstone and Haddonstone. The garden has been built by Cheshire based contractor G K Wilson Landscapes. 9 HOW PERENNIAL HELPS Perennial is the only UK charity dedicated to all horticulturists when times get tough. The charity provides help, advice and financial support during traumatic events such as debt, financial hardship, illness, redundancy, homelessness and bereavement, as well as disability and old age. All support is free, confidential and for as long as it is needed, offering a lifeline for those in crisis. Originally established as the Gardeners Benevolent Institution in 1839, it received royal status in 1851 and became the Gardeners Royal Benevolent Fund, before being re- branded as Perennial in The charity now offers its services to everyone working in or who has worked in the horticulture industry, including gardeners, landscapers, nursery and garden centre staff, parks and grounds care staff and tree surgeons, and their families. There is still a misconception that Perennial only helps those that are retired but in 2014, 85% of new clients and 67% of all clients were under retirement age, demonstrating the challenges faced by many people of working age. In an industry that is often low paid and suffers from a high rate of workplace injury, it is no wonder Perennial s help is needed more than ever. Over 85% of clients say that Perennial s help had a huge or quite big effect on their lives but without the financial support from the horticulture industry and garden loving public, the continuation of Perennial s services is threatened. SUCCESS STORIES John Foley of Holden Clough Nurseries and BBC Young Gardener of the Year 2012 Perennial helped my family when my Dad became ill and all the family went through a difficult time. They assisted in numerous ways, the caseworker visited regularly and helped us get through a challenging period. For me personally they paid for school trips so I didn t miss out but more importantly they paid for my driving lessons. Living in a very rural area, Dad not driving was a problem, learning how to drive allowed me to not only have a life with my friends but more importantly I could drive the van so we could still do the flower shows and make some money. Perennial also helped me access funding so I could go to Askham Bryan horticultural college to study Landscape and Garden Management. If Perennial hadn t been involved in the early days keeping the business going and helping support my interest in gardening, I don t know where we would be today. Now I have a wonderful future I have the nursery and have exciting plans to improve it further. I won the BBC Young Gardener of the Year in 2012 and we won a Gold Medal at RHS Flower Show Tatton Park in Life is good for me and my partner Kate and we are achieving our goals in life.
10 Kate Powell has been receiving help from Perennial for over 10 years Kate s horticultural career was cut short when she became seriously ill with kidney failure. She was forced to stop working and relies on dialysis while she waits for another viable kidney transplant. Kate heard of Perennial through a friend who is a supporter of the charity in Cornwall. She says it took courage and a huge gulp of pride to contact us to ask for help. She received a phone call the next day and recalls those first conversations with a lasting sense of relief: We were visited by a Caseworker within days. She was and still is brilliant, a life belt in the flood. She seemed to know exactly what we needed and her advice and help was perfectly pitched. We didn t feel patronised and felt positive that our situation was being taken seriously. Looking back we simply couldn t have coped during that time without Perennial. Asked what advice she would give to others facing life- changing situations and thinking about turning to Perennial for help, Kate says, Swallow your pride, make contact with Perennial and don t be embarrassed to talk about your needs not just financial. The Caseworkers are professional, discrete and they will go out of their way to do everything they can to help you. You won t regret it. 11 SHOW YOUR SUPPORT FOR PERENNIAL The work of Perennial depends entirely on voluntary donations from the horticulture industry and the garden- loving public there are lots of ways to show support for all those who look after Britain s green spaces. Volunteer Perennial relies on its teams of volunteers and is continually looking for people who enjoy gardens and open spaces and want to get involved. There are opportunities to take part in various volunteering initiatives, such as helping out at the many flower shows and exhibitions Perennial attends, working at Perennial s garden York Gate, fundraising at events and promoting the charity to like- minded people. The annual RHS flower shows including Tatton Park are Perennial s biggest events for volunteers, who get involved in running the Plant Crèche, trade stand and even helping build the gardens. Get in touch with Perennial to find out more. Go Green for HortAid HortAid is Perennial s year- round fundraising campaign that welcomes anyone who wants to get involved. As part of this, the Go Green for HortAid fortnight runs from 1 14 September and the charity is calling for as many people as possible to take part. Over 50,000 has already been raised towards HortAid 2015, with supporters getting involved with activities from sky dives to mud runs. In addition to the usual running, walking, cycling, dressing up and getting muddy events, there are plans afoot for a Go Green Botanical Bake- off. Anything goes, whether participants want to sign up to one of the organised events or create their very own Go Green initiative to raise money for horticulturists. Find out more at Shop with us All profits from the sale of Perennial s great range of gifts and greetings cards as well as gardening tools and gadgets goes directly to helping horticulturists.
