1 Microscope Assignment You will be installing the Motic Images Plus onto your laptop. This will allow you to use the special cameras that attach to our microscopes. You will be able to take still photos and videos of your microscope sample and save them to your laptop. First off, make sure you have some folder ready to take the photos, somewhere on your laptop get organized and have a science folder. Using the CD, install the motic driver and images plus into your applications. Just FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS! Once it is installed, attach the camera to one of the eyepieces of your microscope I will demonstrate in class and plug the USB into your computer. NOW, open up motic. A little tool palette will appear. Make sure the slide is in focus, look through the other eye piece, and that you have as much light as possible. Go to file, click new you want live video (should be default) and you should see your slide. It will probably be too dark so click on image, then click on adjust and go to brightness/contrast. You will need to make the slide brighter and check the contrast. Once you re happy with the view, click on the CAMERA for pictures and the Video icon for movies. I would save pictures as a jpg. Decide how many pictures you want but don t have the time interval too long people are waiting. And it should work!? I will show you once in class. Helpful hints have the usb plugged into your computer BEFORE you turn on Motic. Using the microscopes 1. Locate a good sample of two different living organisms in the water. Make sure that you can view both under 10X on your microscope and that you can find him/her and draw them. 2. Estimate the number of organisms that will fit across the field of view and record. You should have two numbers, one for each organism. 3. Now draw the two different organisms. Remember, white paper, pencil, good title, label if you can and about 1/3 to 1/2 of the page. 4. Record your observations of each organism s movements, special features, unusual occurrences, etc under the drawing also in pencil. Make it neat and dark enough to give a good scan. Now you are ready for the camera attachment!!!!!! 5. Get everything set up properly program opened, slide on stage and focused. Now attach the camera. If you have any problems, MAKE SURE you ask me. Take at least two shots and check them before you finish to see if they look good and that you have a picture of both organisms. (they both don t have to be in the same shot but try) Also take a video of their movements that correlate with your description of it in #4. 6. Now, you need to find the probable name and picture of your two organisms on the internet. Search for them and once you know who they are (or think they are), record them and your reasoning as to why you think that is their names. Now you can do a Google images to get a picture. 7. You will need to use in-text citation for the name and a bibliography and credit the picture. Use MLA style. That means you need to write down where you got the

2 information from before you lose it and can t find it again. I will help you with this in class. Now you have to put it all together????!!!! It was sounding like fun until we got to here. Requirements This is an individual assignment. Everything must be your own work. You may have to share a microscope or even a slide but everything you hand in will be different. The assignment must be done in Pages so that the video will be transferred. You will be marked on; 1. You will need scan in your drawings and them to yourself. 2. Then you will need some program to cut and paste it into your document. I would recommend that you use skitch. I will show you skitch in class. There are lots of other programs that do this. It appears that the new laptops don t want to support skitch and you may need to use the screen/picture capture features of your laptop control shift Then you will calculate the magnification of your drawings, showing all your work either do it on the computer or by hand on paper, scan and skitch in. 4. Record the magnification on the drawings. 5. Your observations will be either typed below or scanned/skitched in. 6. Your probable names reasons why and sources for it. 7. Your shots of your organisms, embed your video and the images from the internet with credit given to the sources. (in Pages) 8. Make it look good like you actually spent some time on it. The Rubrics follows. If you do not understand any category, make sure you ask. You also have to be sure that you understand how to get top marks and how you lose marks. Boxes are purposely left blank for your input.
