Intravenous Administration Short : (30 character limit) LPN Intravenous Admin Catalog Course Description: Within the framework of transitions, the focus of this course is a review of basic anatomy and physiology of the skin, cardiopulmonary and vascular systems. The concepts of homeostasis, fluid and electrolyte balance and fluid needs are discussed in detail. IV fluids and medications are discussed from birth, childhood, adolescence, young adulthood, childbearing, middle adulthood and the elderly. Potential complications of both IV solutions and drugs are discussed with appropriate actions and nursing management interventions. The administration, monitoring and discontinuing of specific IV solutions are discussed. IV access device, care and monitoring as it applies to the LPN role are also included for discussion. This course is designed to meet the Arizona State Board of Nursing requirements for LPN IV therapy and IV medication administration as defined in regulations in July, 1995 and Certification includes passing this course and the completion of 5 successful veni-punctures under the supervision of a professional Registered Nurse or physician at a place of employment or a facility willing to allow and supervise this procedure. Co-requisite(s) Intended Course Goals By the end of the semester, students will be able to: 1. Accountability: Practice within the ethical and legal framework of nursing, reflecting awareness of established standards of care for IV Therapy and IV medication administration. 2. Caring: Apply and integrate physical, emotional, cultural and spiritual components of caring behaviors when completing procedure. 3. Clinical Competence: Demonstrate the use of knowledge and learned nursing skills to provide safe and effective therapeutic nursing interventions for IV and drug administration. 4. Communication: Communicate effectively to teach patients and families purpose, procedure and potential complications of IV therapy and drug administration. 5. Critical Thinking: Use theory, research and critical thinking to formulate and implement decisionmaking in IV Therapy and IV drug administration. Describe potential complications and identify appropriate nursing interventions.

5 6. Culture: Apply knowledge gained through recognition that biological and cultural diversities impact self and others experiences with health care. 7. 6 Course Competencies and Objectives By the end of the t semester, students will be ale to: Competency 1 Utilize basic principles in the initiation of IV therapy to clients of all ages, including site and equipment selection. Objective 1.1 List three factors that influence the patient s anxiety related to IV therapy. Objective 1.2 Role play nursing approaches for emotional support for an IV therapy patient. Objective 1.3 Define the terminology related to intravenous equipment and peripheral venous access. Objective 1.4 List indications for IV therapy Objective 1.5 Identify four veins of the upper extremity appropriate for venipuncture Objective 1.6 Describe each of the 11 steps to initiate an IV safely Objective 1.7 Identify the peripheral veins appropriate for venipuncture. Objective 1.8 List the factors affecting site selection. Objective 1.9 Compare the risks and benefits of lidocaine and topical creams for initiating infusion therapy. Objective 1.10 Describe techniques to assist with venipuncture visualization and dilation in patients with sclerotic veins, alterations in skin integrity, obesity and edema. Objective 1.11 List three sites appropriate for labeling. Objective 1.12 Utilize the key components of the documentation process for peripheral infusion therapy. Objective 1.13 Review the Infusion Nurses Society (INS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines for prevention of catheter related bloodstream infections. Objective 3.4 Correlate the causes, symptoms, laboratory findings, and treatment for electrolyte imbalances. Objective 3.5 Discuss patients at risk for electrolyte imbalance. Objective 3.6 State the normal ph of body fluids. Objective 3.7 Describe the regulatory organs of acid-base imbalance. Objective 3.3 Identify five nursing assessment areas related to patients with fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base disturbances. Competency 4 Recognize factors that increase the risk of complications.
