1 ROCHDALE EARLY ADVANTAGE CHARTER SCHOOL R.E.A.C.S.Newsletter Volume 5, issue 5 February 2012 A Message from the Principal: Dear Parents, It s March, and what a wonderful time of the year, as we head towards Spring. Our children have participated in numerous activities from speaking, reading, singing and sharing a wealth of researched facts and other beneficial information. Learning has no end as long as we strive to gain new knowledge and skills. Hence, moving forward, the anticipation of new growth and rejuvenation is everywhere. This is a good time for students and parents to reflect on their experiences and efforts to date. We can all learn from the past, while building on positive experiences. Thank you for your cooperation in helping the Rochdale Early Advantage Charter School to run smoothly, with the focus on your children. With this being said, please attend the March 13th, 2012 parent conference, where your input is important to us and you can speak with your child s teacher. However, please do remember the two half days on Tuesday, March 13th and again on Friday, March 16th. For this, we truly appreciate your understanding. In addition, during the Parent Teacher Conferences, parents including kindergarten parents, will receive and be able to discuss student report cards, and other performance data. In closing, the next PTO meeting will be held on Friday, March 9th, 6:30 p.m. and the Rochdale Early Advantage Charter School Board will also hold their public meeting. This will give you an opportunity to meet all board members. The meeting will be held in the school multi purpose room, on the lower level, on Tuesday, March 20th, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. Sharp! 2 P A G E 2 R. E. A. C. S. N E W S L E T T E R Spotlight on the Classrooms!!! MARCH 2012 Kindergarten is wrapping up our writing unit on Authors and Mentors. Your child has studied the author Donald Crews and the way he writes his books. For writer s craft both classes have written like Donald Crews. For the Month of March both classes will )SUN MON TUE WED THU FRI SAT 1 2 Dr Seuss Birthday School Trip! PTO Report Card Day/ Parent Teachers Meeting. 12pm Dismissal Board 6p.m Class Assembly :30 p.m. Professional Development. 12pm Dismissal!! continue to work on decoding and blending words. For math we have begun to learn about Class Assembly two dimensional shapes.- Spotlight on the Classrooms!!! In literacy class has been learning how to compare and contrast information while they read. In Math we have been using tens and ones to add, subtract and compare two digit numbers. In Social Studies we learned about the importance of Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, Jackie Robinson and president Barack Obama in Black History. In science, we have been reviewing the needs of plants to prepare for our science experiment. In Literacy we learned to compare and contrast information in our text. We also used questions to make meaning of what we read. In Math we worked with place value and practiced adding and subtracting two digit numbers. In Social Studies we celebrated Black History Month by learning about important Black Americans. In Science we started studying our Earth and what it is made of.

3 In Reading class 2-102, learned how to use the visuals provided in our books to help us understand what is happening in the text more fully. In Math we learned how to use different strategies to subtract. Now we are working on 3 digit addition and subtraction. In Social Studies we celebrated the many influential men and women in Black History that have affected the way we live today. We are starting to learn about Women History. In writing we completed our non fiction writing and celebrated our published pieces. Now we are beginning our author s study to create our own stories. Reminders: Make an Appointment for Parent Teachers Thank you for the support parents!. Class has kicked off National Reading Month with a tribute to Dr. Seuss. Students are reading 45 minutes during class and at home. They have pledged to read 100 books in 1 month to celebrate National Reading Month. The class continues to read, analyze and respond to the text and stories of Tomie de Paola. In Math student s are working on word problems, 3 digit addition and subtraction. In social studies students are researching, analyzing and creating geography and in science, Rochdale Early Advantage Charter School!!!! students are working on Science projects to be presented at the School s Open House. Remember: Schedule an appointment for Parent Teachers Conference: March 13th. Thank you to all the parents for class supplies In Career Education: With Ms. Swan During the month of February all the swancn47@gmail.com. Thank you. students used technology to learn information about Famous African Americans in celebration of Black History Month. In addition to the Social Studies curriculum students learned about the importance of Farmers and how they help our community. Reminders: Ms. Swan is looking for any parents that would be interested in attending our 2nd Career Day on May 1st,2012. Any parents interested should contact Ms. Swan at the school or by at Career

4 IN MANDARIN :WITH MS.Chau Second Grade: Before Winter break we reviewed Lesson 1 to 7, especially for some practical sentences, they can introduce themselves and family members in Chinese. This month we learned How old are you? Do you have a big brother or sister? They can do simple self introductions and introduce family. They learned the song Happy birthday to you - Chinese version, and they like to play the game Are you 1? Are you 2? First Grade: Before the winter break, we reviewed all we have learned from October, we learned a lot of Chinese characters, but by singing the songs we learned sentences. From Happy birthday to you /, My birthday wish, to trying not to make mom angry. Students liked saying Mom is Angry and I am hungry in Chinese. Reminders: :Students are proud of learning Chinese, especially when they go to Chinese restaurants and see Chinese words/letters. They are enjoying sharing what they know to their relatives and friends. I hope you can encourage your children to speak Chinese at any opportunity to help build their confidence. It is not easy to learn a foreign language, especially for the Chinese language, so your child will need parents corporation, especially for homework. Please try to bring back homework completed the next day and remind your child to take home their index cards for practice with you.
