2 Thank you for coordinating a food drive for the Cat Food Bank Our Cat Food Bank has a simple mission: keep pets with the families who love them and out of local animal shelters. Each month we provide enough cat food to feed up to four pet cats per family. Donations are not keeping up with demand. Since opening in June 2008, we ve seen an 800 percent increase in the amount of food we hand out each month. The food drive you coordinate will ensure we don t turn any deserving cat owner away. If you are putting together a food drive that will be open to the public, we will post the location on our Cat Food Bank donation drop off list. Ongoing food collection drop offs also are needed. If your business would like to be a permanent food collection location, please let us know. For these drop off locations, we can arrange for volunteers to pick up the cat food as it accumulates. Determine how many cats you want to feed Set a Goal To help you determine a goal for your food drive, and make it more marketable to your friends or Twitter followers, know that an average of 7.5 pounds of dry cat food will feed one averagesized adult cat for a month. Determine what percentage of the monthly distribution you want to provide Over the last 12 months, we ve handed out an average of 3,101 each month (sometimes a little more, rarely less). Perhaps your goal is 30 percent of this average (which is a respectable 930 pounds). Do you want to do a fundraiser instead? CAT s cat food bank brochure not only contains details about the food bank, it also includes a donation form. We can send you some brochures or you can download and print them yourself. ( About $14 will feed one cat for a month. We can maximize your monetary donation to keep the pantry shelves full. The food bank offers a wide variety of cat food from premium to average. Since it is 100 percent donation driven, we hand out what is donated directly to the people in line. So the average cost takes into account a variety of brands that can be purchased at a grocery store or pet supply store.

3 In, we fed 381 cats through the food bank, which could be equivalent to spending $5,300 on cat food. CAT is a 501c(3) nonprofits and donations may be tax deductable as allowed by the IRS. What CAT s Cat Food Bank Needs The needs of the Cat Food Bank are simple: cat food. If you d like to also collect items that the CAT shelter can use, please do so. A short list of needs includes: Adult cat food (kibble) unopened, unexpired, any brand Kitten food (kibble) unopened, unexpired, any brand Canned cat food unexpired, any brand Scoopable litter Cat toys new (please no used toys) Stainless steel food/water bowl (no plastic please) Breakway collars new Anti viral wipes Go to for a detailed list. 4 Collection Logistics Since this is an ongoing need for CAT, there really is no best time to hold your food drive. It is at your convenience. Considerations for may be: Marketing when can you reach the most people to gather the most food? How long can you host the food drive to get the most impact (if you are not going to be an ongoing drop off location). Advertising can you post signs in your office or business to draw attention. Promoting if there is a block of time when you don t have other activities, perhaps that would be the best time to promote to your friends and family via and social media (these are two places where promoting online, secure donations to the food fund would work best). Delivery the cat food bank is open the first Sunday of every month, so the best time for you to deliver the food collected is the end of the month. That way it will be available for immediate use at the next distribution day. About the Cat Food Bank and CAT The Cat Food Bank opened in June The food bank is open on the first Sunday of the month from 10 am 12 noon and is staffed by volunteers. We hand out a month s supply of cat food (approximately 7.5 pounds per cat) to feed four pet cats per family. If there are donated supplies of litter or canned cat food, we ll offer that as well. All the food handed out is donated or purchased with donated money. Money donated to the cat food bank food fund is kept separate from donations directly to CAT. In 2010, we handed out an average of 3,101 pounds each month that is about 1.5 tons of cat food. The demand has grown significantly since we opened. That first month only 375 pounds was handed out. A record was hit in November of 2010 when over 4,000 pounds went out the door. Clients must be receiving some sort of assistance in order to receive food from our cat food bank. We also provide cat food to home-bound seniors through a partnership with the Washington County Loaves & Fishes. The Cat Adoption Team (CAT) is the Pacific Northwest s largest non-profit, feline-only shelter. CAT was the first animal shelter in Oregon with its own full service veterinary hospital on site. CAT s mission is to work with the community to save the lives of unwanted, homeless, sick, and injured cats and kittens by offering shelter, adoption, foster, hospice, spay/neuter, and veterinary services to end needless feline euthanasia. CAT will find homes for over 3,000 felines this year. As a 501(c)(3) publicly-supported charity, CAT relies on the generous support of the public and volunteers.
