1 Geomicrobiology YouTube Video Assignment Students will, in groups, create a video pod cast, for publication to YouTube that teaches one elemental cycle through the lens of geomicrobiology. Each group will focus on a different cycle, and these videos will be used to teach the rest of the class the different cycles Possible Cycles include: Si, Al, P, As, Hg, Mn, Selenium & Tellurium (potentially also Cr, Molybenum, Vanadium, Ur, Polonium, Plutonium - but probably harder). I am also open to the idea of a non- elemental cycle topic if students have a particular topic they would like to investigate. A) Prep: I. Students will fill out survey (below) indicating their the preferences and tech- savy which will assist in group selection. II. Students will, individually, read up on the geomicrobiology of their cycle. Basic overview readings (chapter from Geomicrobiology 5th edition) will be provided, but each student will need to find, read, and take notes on additional references before the first in class working session. III. Students will watch various YouTube science videos from the list provided below, and we will discuss in class what makes them successful or not. Each student will turn in a 1 paragraph critique for any 3 of the videos from the example list below. B) Part 1: Groups will work together in class, brainstorm, and talk through their cycles. The goal of this session will be to come up with an overview and an understanding of the key geomicrobiological aspects of their cycle. This brainstorming session will be facilitated through the creation of a concept map answering the question What role do microbes play in the global cycle? I. This concept map will be presented quickly to the class, and class members will fill out an evaluation form (below) based on how clear the concept map and its presentation were. The average of all evaluation sheet scores will translate into a grade for each member of the group. C) Part 2: Groups will meet out side of class and plan their you tube video. They will decide on a format (ie static images, animation, puppets, video footage), come up with an outline, and assign tasks for individual people. Ideas and examples are provided (below) I. This outline, with person- specific assigned tasks, will be graded and returned with feedback from the instructor. D) Eval/share: Groups will create their you tube videos, which will be played in class - or assigned viewing out of class depending on class size. I. All students in the class will fill out similar evaluation sheets (below) for each video.
2 II. Instructor will evaluate videos using the same evaluation sheet, but will also provide detailed feedback. Technical assistance: Note that there will be at least one optional, additional class session to familiarize people with the basic tools needed to create these videos. In addition, the instructor is always available for assistance by appointment or during office hours. Assignment Justification (may or may not share with students) Through this assignment I want my students to select an unfamiliar aspect of Geomicrobiology, work with others to gain an understanding of it, and deepen their understanding my communicating it to a general audience. The broadest goal is for students to apply the general understanding of the discipline that they have built in class, and realize that they have the tools to deepen their understanding of the field on their own. There is no better way to do so, than by teaching the material to others balancing scientific complexity with story telling. Through this they will need to sift the fundamental concepts from a large amount of detailed information and from it create a logical and compelling story. Because geobiology is a new and growing field, I want students to leave this course with the necessary tools and skills to update their knowledge base with new discoveries and insights. I don t want them to leave the class thinking they have learned The Material instead I want them to understand how this knowledge is produced, where to look for more of it, how to make sense of new findings, and how to share than knowledge with others. Additionally, I feel strongly independent research combined with working as a team in a creative scientific context are incredibly valuable skills for scientists, and I hope that this assignment will provide valuable experience in this area. - Heather Olins
3 Pre-Survey Name: Topic Selection Rate your interest in the following elemental cycles (1 = most interested): Si, Al, P, As, Hg, Mn, Selenium & Tellurium, Uranium Have a different topic idea for a geomicrobio video? Tell me about it here Group Selection Is there anyone in the class you would like to do this project with? It will be easier to make this happen if you discuss with them ahead of time, and pick your topics together. Gauging your tech- savvy How comfortable are you with the technology you will need to use to do this project? Computers hate me and I already hate this project. I make movies in my sleep Explanation (if you feel like it):
