1 GBE approved 9/14/15 A regular meeting of the Griswold Board of Education took place on Monday, August 24, 2015, at the GMS Library Media Center, located on the 2 nd floor of Griswold Middle School. The meeting was called to order at 6:02 p.m. by Stuart Norman, Jr., Vice-Chairman of the Board. PRESENT ALSO PRESENT ABSENT Stuart Norman, Jr., Vice-Chairman; Laurie Sorder, BOE Secretary; Yvonne Palasky, Valerie Grills, and Mary Beth Malin, BOE Members. Paul K. Smith, Superintendent of Schools; Susan Rourke, GPS Curriculum Director; Erin Palonen, Director of Special Education & Pupil Services; Michele Demicco, GPS Business Manager; Dr. Mark Frizzell, GHS Principal; Marceline Macrino, GHS Associate Principal; Stephen Cravinho, District Wide Activities & Athletic Director; Michele Raynor, GMS Principal; Glenn LaBossiere, GMS Assistant Principal; Joseph Bordeau, GES Principal; and Rita Quiles-Glover, GES Assistant Principal. Elizabeth Dorff, BOE Chairman and Frank Everett, BOE Member. The Board and the audience performed the Pledge of Allegiance. The Board and audience members shared a moment of silence on behalf of Steve Frink, former Griswold High School Head Custodian, who recently passed away. APPROVAL OF MINUTES To approve the regular meeting minutes of July 27, 2015, as presented. COMMUNICATIONS A. CABE/CAPSS Convention The Board was reminded to complete the registration form to take advantage of the early bird registration fees for the upcoming CABE/CAPSS convention in November. The deadline is August 31, B. Thank You Note Matthew Peel The Board received a thank you note from Matthew Peel, Griswold High School former Associate Principal, who was appointed Principal for Bacon Academy in Colchester on July 1. Mr. Peel was recognized and presented with a parting gift at the Board meeting on July 27 th. Congratulations and best wishes Mr. Peel! GBE meeting 8/24/2015 Page 1

2 C. Reminder Newspaper Article The Board received a copy of the Reminder News article, Superintendent keeps his promise of free coffee for residents. HEARINGS AND REQUESTS STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE REPORT NEW BUSINESS A. Honoring our Retirees The Board, administrators, and audience members were happy to honor staff members who announced their retirements late in the year. Among them were: Lorraine Dawley, GHS Science Teacher; Katherine Mann, GHS School Counselor; and Jacquie Burzycki, GHS School Nurse and District Nursing Coordinator. Lee Hulten is also a retiring GMS Language Arts Teacher who was not able to attend this evening s BOE meeting. Best wishes in retirement! The Board recessed at 6:20 PM The Board re-convened at 6:27 PM B. Review and Action on Half Days for Spring Conferences Calendar Update Request from GES/GMS - The Board was asked to approve a request for adjusting the district calendar to reflect an additional set of parent conferences in March 2016 for GES and GMS. The request is to add March 2 and 3 for GMS conferences and March 16 and 17 for GES conferences. This means two additional half days for students, which requires BOE approval, for changes to the already approved district calendar for 2015/16. Seconded by Mary Beth Malin To follow the recommendation and add two, half day conferences in the spring for GES and GMS, as presented. C. *Review and Action on Ratification of Custodial Bargaining Unit Agreement for Period July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2018 This item was referred to executive session for discussion. D. Review and Action on Request for Additional Instructional Assistants The Superintendent reported that the district will be required to hire additional Instructional Assistants for students who require 1:1 support based on IEP s. We continue to work on placing IAs and we are unsure at this time the exact number we are requesting. A detailed explanation and report will be presented by Sue Rourke and Erin Palonen at the next BOE meeting. GBE meeting 8/24/2015 Page 2

3 To hire Instructional Assistants as appropriate per state regulations. E. Review and Action on Reinstatement of Middle School Cross Country for 2015/16 School Year The Superintendent announced that Middle School Cross Country will be reinstated for this coming year. The district and town finalized the agreement with Verizon for a cellular antenna on campus. The funds, along with those collected on line through Go Fund Me: Griswold Cross Country will be used to support the program. Seconded by Mary Beth Malin To reinstate Griswold Middle School Cross Country for 2015/16, as presented. UNFINISHED BUSINESS A. Review and Action on District Goals for 2015/16 School Year, Second Reading The Board approved the district goals for 2015/16, as presented. To approve the 2015/16 Griswold Public Schools district goals, as presented. B. Review and Action on Superintendent Goals for 2015/16 School Year, Second Reading The Board approved the Superintendent Goals for 2015/16, as presented. To approve the 2015/16 Superintendent goals, as presented. C. Review and Action on Board Initiatives, Second Reading The Board approved the Board Initiatives for 2015/16, as presented. Teacher Evaluation Results for 2014/15 Sue Rourke Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment, Susan Rourke, presented results of the 2014/15 teacher evaluations with a tally of teachers at each performance level of the district s teacher evaluation program. This information has been sent to the state, as required, and an update this evening fulfills the requirement for reporting yearly results to the Board. SUPERINTENDENT S REPORT A. Laurie Sorder re-entered the meeting at 6:56 PM B. Policy Update The Superintendent updated the Board on the work of the Policy subcommittee. The committee met twice over the summer and their next Policy subcommittee meetings are scheduled for September 8 th and 22 nd. They will begin review of Series 6000 policies and regulations. C. Future Agenda Items Report from Susan Rourke and Erin Palonen on request for additional Instructional Assistants. COMMITTEE/BOARD REPORTS A. Building Committee Update No update. 6 B. Town Vision Meeting Update The Superintendent recommended that this standing agenda item be removed from this point forward as the Town Vision Committee has not met in several months.
