Season III Search For The Things of God
Word to the leaders Search For Wisdom episode 1 Solomon Season III starts this week. We are moving right along in our series, and this season gives the last practical step before season IV where we teach the kids to step out and shine. Over the next three weeks, we will really try to give the kids some action steps to help them become stars for God! This week we are talking about wisdom. We all face decisions that call for wisdom. The only way we can properly respond is by searching for godly wisdom. By mentioning the word wisdom, anyone who has been around church before can instantly deduce that we are going to be talking about Solomon. After all, the Bible says that he is the wisest man who ever lived! Can you imagine that being said about you? People came from all over the world to ask king Solomon questions. They wanted to see him and have him make decisions for them. Interestingly enough, Solomon was mentioned by his own father as being a wise man before he was ever given the gift of wisdom from God. In 1 Kings 2:9, David gave Solomon a list of things he was passing to Solomon to deal with as the new king. Oddly enough, they are things that David didn t deal with as king, so now Solomon was going to have to. But in giving this list to Solomon, David called him wise and said Solomon will know how to deal with these things. Wow! David told him he is wise, before Solomon even asked God for wisdom. Maybe that s because he knew that if he was going to be a star, he was going to need God s ability to make wise decisions. Today will be a great day to pray that the kids are not only filled with wisdom, but that they will make wise decisions!
Slide 1 Your children s ministry logo Intro Say this Here we go! We are starting Season III of our Stars series. This sure has been fun so far! Season I taught us our first step to becoming the stars that God has called us to be. Does anyone remember what that step was? That s right: Slide 2 - DECIDE TO BE DIFFERENT! Then in Season II, we learned that once we decide to be different, we need to do what? That s right: Slide 3 - TRUST GOD! Well we are about to start Season III where we will be learning the next step to becoming a star! So, if we want to be a star, the next thing we need to be able to do is to... (Interruption by slide 4) Audio Slide 4 And now...the Amazing Search! Skit Presenter Now what? I feel like something is always interrupting service! Trainer (Entering stage) Alright! We ve got some work to do! Presenter Excuse me? Trainer Well, you will have to do, I guess! Presenter What is this all about? Trainer Throughout this season you will be given the task of search and recover! Presenter What? Trainer Listen closely! This is The Amazing Search!

Well, that is because this really is Children s Church! Trainer Oh, I know there are kids here to watch this! But you don t understand! You are going to be given the chance to win big prizes these next three weeks. All you have to do is locate the item we are looking for! Presenter Oh, I play this game every Sunday morning when I am looking for my keys! Trainer No slacking off here! I ll do the talking! Do you understand? Presenter Well, I don t know. I have... Trainer Silence! Do you want to win big prizes or not? Presenter Well, what kind of prizes are we talking about? Trainer Tell em what they are gonna win, Bob! Slide 5 Game Show-style prize winnings video (fake prizes) Presenter You mean, I could win all of that?! Trainer You bet! All you have to do is locate the item we are looking for! Presenter Easy enough! What are we looking for? Trainer Well, today we are looking for a raisin. Presenter - A raisin? Why don t we just run down to Jewel real quick and get one? That would be easy! Trainer Not just any raisin. A raisin located in this pool full of oatmeal! (Assistant brings out a kiddie pool/large bucket full of cooked instant oatmeal). Presenter What? That s weird! Trainer Silence! I wasn t finished! You have to pull out this raisin by only using your mouth! You may not use your hands! Presenter Are you serious? That s ridiculous! Trainer It s only ridiculous if you don t want to win those great prizes we have in store for you! Presenter Why can t anything ever be easy in this service? Trainer Not only that, but you only have 90 seconds to find the raisin! Presenter 90 seconds? That s crazy! No one could do that! Trainer Well you better try hard, because here we go! Presenter Here we go???? I didn t say I was ready!
Skit (Continued) (While presenter is saying above line, get kids to start counting down). Slide 6 90 second musical countdown (During this time, the presenter should fail to find the raisin. Later, the trainer will go down to the oatmeal as if they were going to look for it and pull it straight out with their teeth. This is done by having it in their mouth before going to the oatmeal). Trainer Oh... I am so sorry. You just didn t get it done! Presenter What? This task was impossible! There probably isn t even really a raisin in there is there? Trainer There most certainly is! Presenter Well then I would like to see you find it! Trainer Look, you lost.. that s too bad! You just need to learn how to focus a little more! Presenter What, are you too chicken to try it yourself? Trainer I most certainly am not! Presenter What do you say, boys and girls? Do you think they should try it? Come on, let me hear you! (As presenter gets kids all into it, the trainer should put a raisin into their mouth without anyone seeing). Presenter Alright kids. Count with me! Go! Repeat Slide 6 90 second musical countdown (Trainer should put their face all the way down to the oatmeal, and instantly pull out with the raisin in between their teeth). Presenter What? How did you do that? Trainer it s easy. You just have to know what you are looking for and where to find it! That s all you have to do. Anyone can do it! Presenter How in the world? Trainer Well, gotta go! Have to go make oatmeal cookies before all this goes to waste! Presenter Yeah, I better go clean up! I m a mess!
Big Deal Slide 7 Search for Wisdom Say this As you can see, had to go in back and get cleaned up after that game of Amazing Search. Now, that was amazing that the trainer was able to get in and get that raisin in just seconds. They made a good comment at the end though. If you were listening you would have heard them say that you just have to know what you are looking for, and where to find it! Well that s exactly what this third step to becoming a star is all about! As you just heard, we have to search for the things of God! So over the next three weeks, we will show you the things of God we need to search for! So if you brought your journal in from last week, write in big letters at the top of the page, SEARCH FOR THE THINGS OF GOD! And as we talk today, listen closely to the things you need to be looking for! Slide 8 Big Deal video As you just saw, today we are continuing to learn about becoming a star! And today s Big Deal video taught us that we must SEARCH FOR WISDOM! Now say that with me! What do we need to search for? SEARCH FOR WISDOM! I know it sounds simple, but what does it mean exactly? Well, the first question we need to ask ourselves is, What is wisdom? Slide 9 Wisdom: the quality of having experience, knowledge, and sound judgment. Okay, here we have the definition of wisdom. What it is trying to say is that wisdom is the ability to make good decisions based on what you know and what you have learned through past experiences. If we are going to search for wisdom, then we need to know is where to find it! Where are we going to go to find a pool of experiences, all the knowledge you can imagine, and the ability to make good decisions off of that? Well, I guess as a Christian that is an easy answer, because it is the same place we would go for anything! That s right! To God and his Word! So, as we learn to search for the things of God, the first thing we will do is to SEARCH FOR WISDOM! Oh, come on! You can help me say that, can t you? on the count of three ! Slide 10 SEARCH FOR WISDOM
Game Slide 11 - What s the Combo? For this game you will need 2 tool boxes, 2 combination locks, 2 buckets, 2 sets of cards labeled on one side with the numbers of the combination lock and on the other side with matching Star Characters (explained below), a page of review questions in each toolbox, 2 teams of six (6) kids. Say this - Today we are talking about searching for wisdom! Now, if you were listening to that definition, then you know that wisdom comes from experience. So, today we have a game that will help you search by using past experience. In each corner of the back of the room we have a bucket. IN these buckets are a set of cards with numbers on them. These numbers make up the combination to a lock at the front of the room. Each team will have six (6) people. One at a time, these six people will run to the back of the room, grab a card with a number on it, and bring it to the front of the room. They will place it on the stage while the next person runs and gets another number. Once all six numbers are up on the stage, the whole team will work together to enter the combination into the lock. But, how will they know which order the numbers go? That s easy. In order to help you do this, we have matched a Star Character with each number. All you have to do is remember what week we talked about each character and put the numbers in that order. After the team has correctly entered the combination into the lock, they must open the box and answer the review questions written down in the box. Bring the answers back up to the leader. If the answers you have written down are correct, your team wins! Scripture Verse Slide 12 - Scripture verse video Slide 13 - Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. Colossians 3:2
Scripture Verse (continued) There are three main ways the scripture verse will be taught each series. There is a work out video that was produced on the beach in California to represent the way stars get in shape. You may choose to play that video all three weeks of each series. There is also a computer prompted video in which the kids are prompted to say different parts of the verse and then all together. The third way is to say it live with presenters prompting the kids as they go. It is recommended that you use all three styles in each series, but you may choose to use the videos more if you want to save on presenters. If you are doing it live, choose creative ways to say the verse and have kids compete. Make it a boys vs girls competition. Say this - Today we are starting Season III, which means we are learning a new verse! Now, this verse is simple, so you should be able to say it with no problem already! I want you to think about this verse though. It is going to help us remember to search for wisdom! We don t want to look to the things of this earth; rather, we want to constantly be looking towards God! That s what is meant by us thinking about the things of heaven! Keep this in mind and you will be able to search for wisdom! Star Character Video Slide 14 Star Character video introduces the star for the day As video ends, say this Today we are learning about king Solomon! Did you know that he is recorded in the Bible as being the wisest person who ever lived? That s pretty intense! Listen to this: did you know that before king Solomon ever asked God for wisdom, his father (David) acknowledged him as having wisdom? David told Solomon of some problems he was going to have to face as the new king. But then told him that he would be able to figure things out with all of his wisdom. Wow! Solomon was already wise, but he still asked God for more wisdom. That s what makes him a star. He knew to search for wisdom. Just like you, right? All you need to do is: Slide 15 SEARCH FOR WISDOM
Bible Story (Message) Slide 16 - Solomon Poster Have you ever fought with you brother or your sister before? Of course you have! That s what brothers and sisters do! They fight! Here is my favorite one though... Have you ever gotten something the same day your brother or your sister got the same thing? What always happens in these type of situations is that one person inevitably breaks theirs and then tries to trade the broken one with the good one as if nothing happened. Then you are left fighting over whose is whose! By the time mom and dad get involved, there has been so much fighting and bickering that parents don t even care whose toy it really is. They simply say that neither kid can have it! I know these two little girls who both got the same Barbie on the same day. Much like this one. (Hold up a Barbie doll). But the younger girl left her Barbie out, and their dog got ahold of it and chewed it up. So the younger sister went and found the older sister s Barbie and stole it. Now, when the older sister got home and realized what had happened, it turned into a huge fight! They both ran to their parents and argued with one another! They both claimed that the good Barbie was theirs! In 1 Kings 3:16 27, we hear a similar story that happened in Israel. Two women came before King Solomon and told him their story. Slide 17 Please, my lord, one of them began, this woman and I live in the same house. I gave birth to a baby while she was with me in the house. Three days later this woman also had a baby. We were alone; there were only two of us in the house. But her baby died during the night when she rolled over on it. Then she got up in the night and took my son from beside me while I was asleep beside her. And in the morning when I tried to nurse my son, he was dead! But when I looked more closely in the morning light, I saw that it wasn t my son at all. So these two ladies came before Solomon to tell him their story. Basically, they both lived together and had a child around the same time as one another. In the middle of the night, one of the ladies rolled over onto her baby and killed it. Pretty sad, huh? But instead of accepting it, she did what many of us do when we break our toy...she tried to exchange it with the other woman s child since it was still living! Let s continue the story...
Bible Story (continued) Slide 18 Then the other woman interrupted, it certainly was your son, and the living child is mine. So, the second lady gave the typical, No I didn t! You did! defense. Now remember, Solomon didn t know these ladies and had no way of telling which one is telling the truth. So he listened to their debate! Slide 19 No! the first woman said, the living child is mine and the dead one is yours. And so they argued back and forth before the king. Now imagine being Solomon and having to decide between the two of these ladies. You don t know them, and all you hear is their stories. How would you handle this? Well, let s listen to what king Solomon said. He continued on in verse Slide 20 Then the king said, Let s get the facts straight. Both of you claim the living child is yours, and each says that the dead one belongs to the other. So he verified the facts. Now he was faced with a decision. You have to understand that he was acting as judge here. Whatever he said was going to happen! No one could dispute his judgment. So if he awarded the child to one lady, the other was not going to have the child no matter what. The king not only had to make a decision that would be hard, he had to make a decision that would affect the child s life forever. So, he did what any reasonable man would do... Slide 21 All right, bring me a sword. So a sword was brought to the king. Then he said, Cut the living child into two, and give half to one woman and half to the other! He was saying, If you are going to fight over the baby and both claim it to be yours, then you will both get half. King Solomon was thinking of the only thing that would be fair! How would that make you feel if you were one of those ladies? Remember this Barbie I was telling you about? Imagine the mom looking at the girls and saying, Okay, go get your father s saw! (Have someone bring in a saw of some sort).
Bible Story (continued) Now, if you were the two girls, you would be trying to figure out what was going to happen while your mom fired up that saw! What good would a Barbie be if it were cut in half? (CAREFULLY cut the Barbie in half). What if the mom said, Now you have one chewed up Barbie and one cut in half Barbie. I think the younger sister would say, Oh, never mind. That one was mine. You can keep the cut up Barbie and I ll go get the chewed up one. Now put yourself in the place of these ladies before King Solomon! He was talking about a living child! And he told his men to get a sword and cut the child in half! Can you imagine that? Listen to the ladies responses... Slide 22 Then the woman who was the real mother of the living child, and who loved him very much, cried out, Oh no, my lord! Give her the child please do not kill him! slide 23 But the other woman said, Alright, he will be neither yours nor mine; divide him between us! So King Solomon s plan worked, and the real mother was made clear! King Solomon responded by saying... Slide 24 Do not kill the child, but give him to the woman who wants him to live, for she is his mother! King Solomon was able to find the woman who was really the mother, because he was a man who searched for wisdom! And this wisdom helped him to make right choices! That should be an inspiration to us, to help us search for wisdom! Why? Because our Big Deal today says that if we are going to be a star for God, we have to SEARCH FOR WISDOM! Oh come on! What did I say? Slide 25 SEARCH FOR WISDOM!
Object Lesson #1 Slide 26 - Image of Magic 8 Ball Well, you just heard of King Solomon s crazy way of finding the real mother in today s story. I don t know if I would have been able to come up with such a creative way to solve such a big problem! So how does someone become as wise as Solomon? Because I m sure all of you have been through situations where you would love to have had God s wisdom in deciding what to do! Maybe you haven t had to find the real mom of a baby like that story, but how many of you had to decide to make the right decision when your friends were telling you to do something wrong? We are faced with things all the time that call for wisdom to help us make the right decision! Have you ever seen one of these before? This is called a magic 8 ball. Now, you can get these at Walmart for a little over $8.00. Here is what you do: you ask it a question, then shake it up, and Presto! You get the answer to the question you are looking for! Pretty cool, huh? So if you want to know if you should go to church, just ask it.... and see? You get your answer. If you want to know if you should do your homework, just shake it up.... and there you go. Your answer. (Say a few other cheap questions). Now, does this seem like a good way to get answers to the tough questions you have in life? No! Do you think King Solomon used one of these magic 8 balls to solve big problems like what happened with those two ladies? No way! He had a different type of wisdom. Listen to what type of wisdom the Bible says that king Solomon had... Slide 27 & 28 1 Kings 4:29 34 God gave Solomon very great wisdom and understanding, and knowledge as vast as the sands of the seashore. In fact, his wisdom exceeded that of all the wise men of the East and the wise men of Egypt. He was wiser than anyone else, including Ethan the Ezrahite and the sons of Mahol Heman, Calcol, and Darda. His fame spread throughout all the surrounding nations. He composed 3,000 proverbs and wrote 1,005 songs. He could speak with authority about all kinds of plants, from the great cedar of Lebanon to the tiny hyssop that grows from cracks in a wall. He could also speak about animals, birds, small creatures, and fish. And kings from every nation sent their ambassadors to listen to the wisdom of Solomon.
Object Lesson #1 (continued) Wow! That s pretty amazing wisdom! People from every nation came to listen to him. That doesn t sound like wisdom from one of these magic 8 balls. Does it? In fact, did you catch what verse 26 started with? God gave Solomon very great wisdom, understanding, and knowledge as vast as the sands of the seashore. Amazing, isn t it? God gave him such great wisdom! And that s the type of wisdom we need to search for! Why? Because if we are going to be a star for God, we need to... Slide 29 Search for wisdom! Object Lesson #2 Slide 30 - Solomon Poster So that s great that God gave Solomon all of that wisdom, but why did he do that for Solomon? How come he was given all that wisdom? The answer to that is found in 1 Kings 3:5 9 Slide 31 That night the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream, and God said, What do you want? Ask, and I will give it to you! Solomon replied, You showed faithful love to your servant my father, David, because he was honest and true and faithful to you. And you have continued your faithful love to him today by giving him a son to sit on his throne. Now O LORD my God, you have made me king instead of my father, David, but I am like a little child who doesn t know his way around. And here I am in the midst of your own chosen people, a nation so great and numerous they cannot be counted! Give me an understanding heart so that I can govern your people well and know your people well and know the difference between right and wrong. For who by himself is able to govern this great people of yours?
Object Lesson #2 (continued) God came to Solomon and told him to ask whatever he wanted of him and he would get it! So Solomon asked God to give him the right heart, and the ability to act out of the right heart so that he could take care of this great people of his. I have a teacher s answer key here. Slide 32 - A sample teacher s answer key Have you ever seen one of these before? You better not have seen one of these before! That would mean you were cheating!!!!!! Just kidding. Anyway, these are used for teachers to grade papers with. They are helpful, especially when grading a whole stack of papers at the same time. The tricky part is grading essays or written answers that have multiple sentences to them. These answers are a little more complicated to grade. Sometimes essay questions have more than one correct answer to them. So when a teacher is grading these, they can t just look off the answer sheet. They have to read through the answers one at a time and make sure they know what the student is trying to say. Solomon wanted more than just the answers. He knew that the people of God were more like essay questions that have different answers for different people and different situations. So when God offered Solomon anything he wanted, he asked for the most important thing he could think of. He asked to have the ability to understand! We aren t just talking the ability to know right and wrong, (though he asked for that too). We aren t even talking about the ability to make the right decisions. He asked for a heart that knows the right answers and wants to do the right thing! He wanted wisdom, compassion, and justice all in one! So he asked for it! And God made him so wise that people traveled great distances to see him and ask his advice. So there is the answer for you! If you want wisdom, all you have to do is ask! You want to make wise decisions? Ask God to help you be able to do that! James 1:5 says... Slide 33 If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.
Closing Many of you are going through rough times, and you need God to give you the wisdom that will help you get through those times! Pray that God will help kids who are having rough times. Pray that God will help every kid be filled with wisdom! that they need to know God is with them and is taking care of them. Small Group Questions 1. What would you ask for if you could have anything in the world? 2. Why do you think Solomon asked for wisdom? 3. Solomon asked for an understanding heart. What do you think that means? 4. Have you ever wanted to understand why something happened? If so, what? 5. Have you ever been caught in the middle of a disagreement with two people before? Were you able to help them figure out the answer or not? 6. Is there anything you have ever done that you weren t sure if you did properly? 7. Would you like to have more wisdom in your life to make the right decisions? 8. Pray and ask God to fill you with wisdom right now!
