2 1.1.5 Associate of Fashion Design Program Goals Students who graduate with an Associate Degree in Fashion Design will have developed the ability to assume responsibility for entry or mid-level positions of employment within the fashion industry as style technicians, product developers, design room assistants, patternmakers or merchandizing assistants. As well, graduates are well poised to pursue careers in the retail sector or apply their competence within cultural and costume design fields or pursue entrepreneurial endeavours. This 2 year full-time program has been designed to produce creative and innovative technicians with a broad knowledge of fashion processes and methodologies. The program encompasses a broadly based design education with an interactive approach to apparel design and production strategies, textile development, and fashion styling. This is achieved throughout the program by a carefully structured curriculum which fosters creative ability, critical analysis, technical competence and business applications. Studies include fashion design; fashion drawing; draping and pattern drafting; garment production; fashion and textile history, fashion marketing and production processes within the apparel industry. In the second year, Students design and produce mini apparel collections, from concept to production, and create professional product portfolios. The program provides opportunity for practical experience through fashion industry sponsored events, field trips and internships. While the program emphasizes Fashion Studies, it also provides a solid foundation in English language and communication, software technologies and cultural awareness. Students have the flexibility to elect either a Business or Fashion Design concentration track in the second year. Program Objectives The Fashion Design Program mandate is to achieve the following objectives Deliver quality fashion education reflective of international industry practices and observance of safe working practices within the studios. Present a curriculum which balances creativity with marketability, combines theoretical and practical approaches to learning and fosters individual expression. Provide a solid foundation that incorporates and expands creativity, design aesthetics, visual literacy, technical competence and business practice. Equip graduates with the confidence, ability and acumen to: - Work competently in various capacities as a professional fashion technician. - Effectively and creatively interpret concepts, present ideas, justify decisions. - Adeptly analyze problems to develop innovative strategies, solutions and products. - Stylize, Develop and merchandize well fitting apparel mindful of market demands. - Prepare attractive promotional and technical materials that illustrate creative flair, innovative styling and cultural awareness. Work well independently or as a productive team member who is respectful of individual and cultural diversity Demonstrate enhanced ability for numeracy, written communications, software technologies, business applications and undertaking independent research. Continue his or her study at higher education institutions for a bachelor degree. Program Learning Outcomes At the time of graduation, the students should have the ability to: - Knowledge and Understanding (Subject related) PLO1: Understand various phases of fashion (apparel) development from design inception to production and marketing through to sales. PLO2: Display creative, technical or marketing competence relative to diverse 27

3 applications within fashion and its related fields. PLO3: Explain data structures and business applications within the fashion sector relative to manufacturing, materials sourcing, marketing or product pricing. PLO4: Demonstrate proficiency of skills to produce functional designs, pattern drafts, garment prototypes, and technical references that embody sound design principles. - Cognitive (Analytical) Skills PLO5: Analyze problems arising relative to fashion design, product styling, apparel production or marketing and demonstrate ability to formulate effective solutions. PLO6: Identify materials, processes, and production systems inherent in fashion products and demonstrate the ability to consider all factors when making judgments relative to style, cost, and construction method or fabric selection. PLO7: Interpret and construct meaning from visual images, global awareness and historic influences. PLO8: Distinguish between the aesthetic design, functional purpose and cultural significance of clothing. - Transferable Skills PLO9:Effectively present concepts through oral and written communication skills in English or visually through illustrative and technical rendering. PLO10:Evaluate and utilize appropriate investigative and research strategies, Internet sources and software applications when developing a body of work, design brief or seeking inspiration. PLO11:Work effectively as a contributing team member respectful of cultural diversity and individual differences. PLO12:Establish safe working practices for self and others relative to equipment and machinery, handling of product, disposal of materials and relevant legislation. Completion Requirements The intended fashion program is comprised of four semesters of full time study and an additional short semester of eight weeks for Fashion Design Internship course making a total of 66 required credit hours. The student is required to complete the program comprise of a combination of General Education, Business and Program specific courses. To qualify for the Associate Degree in Fashion Design, the minimum grade for graduation is a cumulative 2.0 GPA. The minimum duration for completion is two years, with a maximum of four years. Students who complete the program with a GPA of less than 2.0 are allowed to repeat courses in order to improve their GPA. If necessary under recommendation of the Program Coordinator, students experiencing difficulty attaining the GPA prior to completion may be placed on academic probation for the next semester or be required to repeat particular courses in order to improve letter grades and insure competence in the course learning outcomes. 28

Textiles I: Fabrics & Fashion Textile science is the study of the structure, characteristics and performance of fabrics. This course provides a broad overview of the properties, composition and construction of textile fibers, yams and fabrics relative to fashion. This course will explore the components of textiles from basic fiber type, to yarns and fabric structure in combination Aesthetics, serviceability, comfort and care of textile materials will be examined in order to equip students with the ability to make appropriate fabric selections based on fashion styling. Each student will compile a swatch kit of textile samples for reference use throughout the program. Fundamental Design This course introduces the creative process and the fundamental... visual concepts of design. The nature of design development will be explored as students manipulate the formal elements of design and visual literacy through a series of creative exercises and develop skills for the effective presentation and communication of visual ideas, concepts and designs Computer Application for Fashion I Students will learn how to integrate manual and digital drawing skills to create Digital fashion images, print designs, fat sketches and presentation boards. Students will become adept at using the toolbox options and other fundamental functions of industry standard software applications relative to design fields. Students will gain understanding and competence utilizing Apparel specific CAD programs and appreciate the impact of technology, fashion and computer generated imagery 29

5 Construction Techniques for Fashion In this introduction to industrial garment assembly practices and pattern development, students will sew a variety of samples and draft basic projects using industrial methods. A combination of lecture and lab sessions will enable students to understand how various construction techniques are used in fashion production. Students will learn how to safely and efficiently operate industrial equipment. Students will also learn to develop basic patterns and manipulate them to create various design styles. The importance of proper garment fit will be introduced. Creative Fashion Design This course further explores basic design elements and principles relative to creative design and fashion styling. Emphasis will be placed on conceptualization and interpretation of a theme, aesthetic value and the ability to communicate meaningful ideas into clothing. Students will acquire the ability to take original ideas to final resolutions through activities which foster originality, problem solving and critical refection Introduction to Fashion Merchandising This course focuses on the commercial and professional aspects of fashion design and the diversity of the industry. Students will gain awareness of the structure of a fashion business. Through the research and design of products, students will expand critical thinking skills and understand the designer s role in the development, production and merchandising of fashion. Promotion, marketing and sales techniques are a practical component of the course demonstrated through the development of visual materials and presentations. Pattern Drafting & Construction I Through fat pattern and draping methods, students will further refine their ability to develop patterns to accurately reflect design concepts; consider fabric characteristics and incorporate appropriate construction methods. Students will concentrate on pattern development with emphasis on pattern alterations and fitting techniques. Style details will include neck treatments, collars and sleeves. A resource book of assembly techniques, pattern drafts, manipulations and drapes will be compiled. Students will be required to work in partnerships for components of class activities. Historic Costume & Clothing Fashion s diversity is due to many realms, and influence is continually drawn from historical contexts. This course presents a chronological framework and identifies the importance of clothing and costume through the ages; and examines how past eras and cultural contexts frame and influence present day fashion. The development of clothing from ancient to modem times is examined relative to style, tradition and societal values. The evolution of clothing to fashion as a design concept is explored from a western perspective highlighting the influences and styles of major 20th century fashion designers. Textile II: Surface Embellishment Students will learn how to apply design elements and principles to embellish and decorate the surface of fabrics. Experimentation with stenciling, fabric painting, and dyeing and resist methods will be introduced; Techniques and materials which create 3dimensional effects for fabric ornamentation are researched, explored and practiced. Students will develop a collection of resource samples and produce surface designed fabrics, accessories or embellished apparel. 30

6 Fashion Styling and Merchandizing This course is a directed to the commercial and professional elements of fashion. Apparel styling, fashion merchandising and marketing will be presented and analyzed. Students will learn how to develop manufacturer lines by examining inspiration sources, customer expectations, fabric groupings and styling. Course projects will examine specific markets relative to product, fabrication and design. Visual communication approaches to express mood, ideas and technical details to manufacturing and marketing sectors will be expanded. Pattern Drafting & Garment Construction II Through more advanced techniques, students will further expand their ability to draft, fit and construct fashion garments and patterns. Projects will concentrate on lined garments and the complex relationships between garment type, fabric characteristics, and pattern development and construction method. Emphasis will be placed upon correct garment fit, fabric handling and the incorporation of industry standards within all aspects of product development. Students will experiment with a variety of fabrics, support materials and stabilizers. A resource book of assembly techniques, pattern drafts, block manipulations and prototypes will be compiled. Students will be required to work in partnerships or groups for components of class activities. Fashion Design Portfolio This course is covers advanced theories and the practical application of design, color, texture and fabrication principles relative to apparel design within the fashion industry. A continuation of FAD230, with emphasis placed on market research, portfolio creation and the development of a design collection reflecting individual style and creativity. Students will design apparel that meets the functional needs of specific markets and create a mini line collection for the market of their choice. Further examination of inspirational sources and the development of refined concept boards, illustrations and technical drawings are integral to the course A Marketing portfolio highlighting the collection will be planned and developed. Fashion Collection Development This course builds upon the knowledge gained in FAD240. Students will refine their competence for product development through pattern drafting, manipulations and construction assembly. Students will create apparel that meets the functional needs of specific markets and produce a series line collection of sample prototypes and final garments for the market of their choice. Emphasis will continue to be placed upon and the incorporation of industry standards in all aspects of product development. The resource book of manipulations and prototypes developed in FAD240 will be expanded. Independent research will be expected throughout the course relative to pattern development and appropriate construction methods. Fashion Design Internship Internship is a core requirement of the Associate Degree in Fashion Design program. This course is a supervised work experience in one facet of the wide professional field of Fashion, and consists of a short 8 week semester. A minimum of230hours of practical work on- site is required. The Internship offers important benefits to the graduating student, including the opportunity to interact with industry professionals, observe complexities of business operations and apply concepts and competencies learned in the Associate of Fashion Degree program to real scenarios and problems faced by firms while exploring a career direction within Fashion. The Internship is taken at the of the program of study and it is essential that the content areas have been covered before undertaking this capstone course to ensure professional standards are demonstrated and exhibited 31
