1 Onion River Sports in Montpelier, VT is seeking a creative and energetic full-time Marketing Director. This is an opportunity to coordinate and implement marketing strategies for 3 downtown store locations (Onion River Sports, The Shoe Horn, Onion River Kids) and to integrate the company's successful online e-commerce business into a comprehensive brand identity. We're looking for a reliable, self-motivated and upbeat person with great attention to detail and skillful communication with staff and the general public. The ideal candidate has a proven track record in the field, has experience managing staff, as well as knowledge of retail and internet marketing strategies for the outdoor retail industry. JOB TITLE STORE(s) DEPARTMENT SCHEDULE Marketing Director Onion River Sports, Onion River Kids, The Shoe Horn, ORS Direct Marketing Full-Time, Salaried Position COLLABORATION The Marketing Director reports directly to the Owner. The Marketing Director oversees the Marketing Content Specialist and any marketingrelated sub contractors or in-house positions which could include: Graphic Designer, Web Designer, Web Developer, Search Engine Optimization Manager, etc. The Marketing Director works closely with the following staff: o General Manager and Head Buyer: to comprise the lead strategy team.

2 o o o Store Managers: to strengthen store brands and implement marketing strategies. Buyers: to address specific category and brand promotional needs. Events Coordinator: to market and promote events. The Shoe Horn began in 2001 as an offshoot of Onion River Sports offering fashionable and comfortable clothing and footwear for Vermont s lifestyles that can go from work to play and back again. Onion River Kids opened in September 2008 after outgrowing the kid s section at Onion River Sports, and offers rugged gear, comfy durable clothing and shoes, and fun stuff that helps you enjoy the outdoors no matter how small you are. Onion River Sports Direct is the online retail division of Onion River Sports with over three decades of sales and service expertise in the outdoor gear & equipment industry, specializing in car racks, skis and snowshoes. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Marketing Strategy: Create & implement annual budgets and strategies for sales promotions, events, sponsorships and advertising. Media Buying & Promotion: Create and oversee implementation of media plan, contracts, and advertising. Brand Management: Maintain and strengthen organizational brand identities to meet customer needs and improve profitability. Staff Management: Support, direct, oversee and develop marketing department staff. Communication: Serve as spokesperson for the Onion River Sports family and act as liaison between the stores and the general public & media outlets. Special Projects: Lead special project marketing opportunities as they arise. Teamwork: Remain flexible and be willing to pitch in and step up to address needs or opportunities that arise within and beyond your department, store location, or job description. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES Marketing Strategy Create and oversee implementation of marketing strategies for all physical and online stores based on market trends, customer data and sales history. Develop and oversee online content calendar and manage implementation across all platforms.

4 Identify target and niche markets and develop strategies to communicate with them. Develop and track an annual marketing budget in line with overall strategy. Maintain an awareness of current trends and strategies of direct competition as well as the outdoor retail industry at a whole. Select and incorporate vendor promotional opportunities. Create and maintain marketing metrics and use performance results to inform strategy. Manage relationships with community partners, press, and online networks. Serve as ORS spokesperson and liaison with the general public & media outlets. Maintain relationships with local athletic organizations, athletes and teams to support sponsorship strategies that promote ORS. Media Buying & Promotion Contribute to organizational growth through various marketing activities such as establishing customer satisfaction and appreciation programs, promotional packages with coupons and incentives, as well as outreach materials for media distribution. Plan schedules for advertising with various media vendors. Negotiate contracts for advertising with various media vendors. Look for and analyze new advertising opportunities. Manage and request cooperative advertising income from suppliers. Schedule and approve all content copy for all marketing channels. Manage the production and distribution of promotional material. Brand Management Responsible for maintaining and improving overall brand integrity using customer feedback, internal discussions and strategies, and market research. Manage each store s unique brand identity. Utilizes each store s brand to clarify, strengthen and promote organizational culture and history. Grow sales and brand reach through oversight of all marketing activities. Oversee development of all branded materials. Oversee the updating and accuracy of retail site URLs [OnionRiver.com, TheShoeHorn.net, and OnionRiverKids.com] Oversee the updating and accuracy of online retail sites.

5 Acts as Creative Director for development of all ads, videos, photography and other media. Staff Management Develop and manage a team that establishes trust with our customers and healthy relationships with community partners. Responsible for hiring and maintaining quality job performance within the Marketing Department. Maintain store staff by recruiting, interviewing, selecting, orienting, and training and developing employees with all the tools necessary to provide the highest levels of service and expertise. Ensure that the proper paperwork is completed and filed for all new hires. Maintain professional and technical expertise of staff through workshops, product clinics, trainings, and professional opportunities when available. Conduct annual Performance Reviews for sales staff, including mid-year performance check-ins. Supervise marketing department staff, assigning tasks and following up to ensure successful completion. Create and maintain a work schedule that balances employee needs with ensuring the best possible customer service within payroll budget. Protect employees and customers by providing a safe and clean store environment. Lead monthly staff meetings to check in and address challenges & opportunities as a team. Create and maintain tools to encourage best practices and procedures for day-to-day activities (i.e. checklists, manuals, organized systems, signage, etc.) Handle all personnel matters including: o Monitoring staff hours to prevent overtime o Adjusting incorrect or missing time clock entries o Applying Combined Time Off hours for staff when requested o Assisting employees with benefits administration by communicating with the HR Manager or Owner o Using to HR tools including job descriptions and the employee handbook to answer questions and reiterate policies and expectations

6 Treat your staff as well you treat your customers. Manage marketing department contracts, working with the Owner to select contracts and directly negotiating and managing agreements. Communication Attend monthly Strategy Meeting with General Manager, Head Buyer and Owner to explore ways to improve products and services, increase profitability, and connect overarching store strategies. Attend weekly Management Meetings to keep up to speed with management strategies, challenges, and opportunities and to update managers on upcoming marketing & event. Lead weekly Marketing Meeting with Events Coordinator, General Manager, and Store Managers to update, divide & conquer upcoming sports and sales events and marketing activities. Special Projects Lead special project marketing opportunities as they arise, possible including website projects, special marketing campaigns, e-commerce opportunities, brand development opportunities, large events, etc. QUALIFICATIONS Required College degree in marketing, business, communications or related field. Minimum of 5 years marketing experience. Experience managing a staff of at least 2 people. An ability to multitask, problem solve and think creatively. Knowledge of a wide range of marketing techniques and concepts. Working knowledge of current Search Engine Optimization and Search Engine Marketing best practices. Strong supervisory and communication skills. Positive, customer-first attitude.

7 Excellent verbal and written communications skills. Ability to work effectively with others in a team-oriented environment. Ability to work a flexible schedule including nights and weekends. Ability to work within a budget. Preferred Experience building and staffing an internal Marketing Department. Experience working within contractual relationships. In depth knowledge of retail and internet marketing strategies for outdoor retail industry. Familiarity with point-of-sale computer systems and inventory control software. Experience in the marketing department of outdoor sporting goods at the retail level, or background in outdoor sports & recreation retail. Pursues outdoor activities and can speak from experience about the brands we sell.
