FROM REGIONAL MAPS TO THE EUROPEAN SCALE: THE INSPIRE-CHALLENGE FOR THE EXAMPLE OF HYDROGEOLOGY Bernhard Wagner Bavarian Environment Agency Geological Survey

Introduction The INSPIRE-challenge for geological surveys: Harmonization of complex maps to the European INSPIRE data specifications Extra-challenge for regional geological surveys: three levels of geodata infrastructures: regional, national and European Example: hydrogeological maps of Geological Survey of Bavaria 2

Hydrogeological Survey of Bavaria in the scale 1 : F40 % of Bavaria maps published (HK100) F65 % of Bavaria work finished F full coverage planned until end of

Hydrogeological Base Map 1 : Hydrogeologial units Groundwater contours Hydrogeologial cross sections 4 Hydrogeological point data

Vom Ist-Zustand zum Soll-Zustand FROM REGIONAL MAPS TO THE EUROPEAN SCALE Hydrogeology Mapping at Geological Survey of Bavaria after 2000: from data to information system to maps before 2000: from data to maps 5

Comparison of Bavarian and German hydrogeology model German model 11 Bavarian model

The European hydrogeology model: core overview of INSPIRE Data Specification Geology 3.0 Geology model: GeoSciML INSPIRE core hydrogeology model Area Management (AM): WFD-Groundwater Body Core model overview 12 Geology model: Borehole_Core

Comparison of Bavarian and INSPIRE hydrogeology model INSPIRE core hydrogeology model 13 Bavarian model

Comparison of German and INSPIRE hydrogeology model INSPIRE core hydrogeology model 14 Bavarian German model model

The more complex INSPIRE approach: aquitards and aquicludes??? 15

Conclusions The Bavarian hydrogeological map can probably be mapped to the INSPIRE data specification quite well, but not all requirements of the INSPIRE model can be met Suggestion: mapping to European data models should favorably be done from national data bases à Regional surveys would then only have to map their data once to the national SDIs (example: BoreholeML) Complexity of models should decrease with scale 16
