This integrated skills course will prepare you for immersion into English-speaking environments and provide you with the confidence to successfully navigate your path to success. American Culture Learning the customs and culture of a new country can be challenging. This course will help you ease into the new and exciting culture around you. In addition to classroom study, two culturallythemed seminars are given each week by a speaker from the community. Content Preparation Theology and History are big parts of your upcoming American high school experience. This course will give you a foundation in language used in Theology and History courses. You will be exposed to common themes and be given new vocabulary from the Academic Word List in both subject matters. Study Skills Study Skills are important to the success of any college student. This course will provide you with a practical how-to approach to academic writing, presentation skills, and notetaking. Contextualized activities and specific writing practice will enhance your skills and provide you with the tools to become a better student. American Culture Learning the customs and culture of a new country can be challenging. This course will help you ease into the new and exciting culture around you. In addition to classroom study, two culturallythemed seminars are given each week by a speaker from the community. College Workshop Navigating the college admissions process isn t easy. In this course, you will have the opportunity to work with officials from college administration offices. You will also have the opportunity to write a practice personal essay and be shown how to complete a college application. 5 G S AY D S AY D Blending the practical elements of the classroom with real American lifestyle and language, this road trip gives you the opportunity for a hands-on American Experience. Learning while doing, you will visit three of America s most influential cities: New York City, Washington D.C. and Philadelphia. This 7-day, all-inclusive road trip will walk you through the hustle and bustle of Times Square all the way to the towering steps of the Lincoln Memorial. You ll learn on the road through history lessons, university campus tours, art exhibits and other interactive cultural experiences. As the jumpstart to your American experience, this road trip will put you a step ahead during your academic year abroad. The American Experience Road Trip will be a full week of supervised excursions on a coach bus he activities during the week may vary. 6 Accommodation Dining More Information Your accommodation will be located on the UMass Amherst campus at the Commonwealth Honors College Residential Community, a state-of-the-art student residential building (pictured below). On arrival day, you will be assigned a shared suite with a fellow UTP student as a roommate. Each suite includes two bedrooms, a living room and a bathroom shared with three other UTP students. During your summer stay, you will be granted access to the laundry facilities within the residence building as well as designated classrooms, dining facilities, and WiFi available throughout the campus. Additionally, the dormitories observe all Massachusetts Health and Safety requirements, monitored by campus security at all times. At the UTP Summer Academy, you will be provided with breakfast, lunch and dinner. All meals will be served at the Hampshire Dining Hall on campus. Dining is buffetstyle with both vegetarian and gluten-free options. On Wednesdays and Sundays, during the Summer Academy day trips, packed lunches will be provided. Sample food schedule* Entry Requirements High School Head Start: Open to any newly- accepted student who plans to start their studies at one of the UTP partner high schools in New York or New Hampshire. University Admissions Prep: Open to any current/returning UTP student who plans to continue their studies at one of the UTP partner high schools in New York or New Hampshire. Pricing A one-time fee of $6,500 covers all expenses during the UTP Summer Academy. This includes three weeks of accommodation, program courses, transportation, food, the American Experience Road Trip, and activity entrance fees.
