2 Better information for better results Recommendation 3 Innovation & ehealth ehealth is the cost-effective and secure use of information and communications technologies (ICT) in support of health and health-related fields (WHA 58.28). By 2015, all countries have integrated the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in their national health information systems and health infrastructure. 2

7 WHO-ITU collaboration WHO-ITU jointly have developed a National ehealth Strategy Toolkit, to help countries plan and implement ehealth strategies. Commission on Information and Accountability. The background paper on ICT for Health for the Commission was written by WHO and Input from ITU. WHO and ITU are jointly developing an ehealth project database: Build knowledge base of lessons learned, and best practices Identify projects that can be considered for scale up WHO and ITU are partners for implementation of recommendation 3. This entails supporting specific projects and national ehealth Strategies development where needed. 7
8 WHO-ITU collaboration (cont.) ITU Telecom World ITU Telecom World is the main global event showcasing ICT. Following the successful jointly-organized ehealth presence in 2009 and 2011 in Geneva, DG inaugurated the 2011 pavilion and participated in the Forum. ITU and WHO are planning for the 2012 event in Dubai, to highlight progress, challenges and the ongoing need for low-cost and innovative ehealth solutions in the region. World Summit on the Information Society. ITU follows up the landmark event with annual progress reports, and a multistakeholder forum on the main WSIS action lines. WHO supports this by reporting through our Global Observatory for ehealth, and by facilitating the Forum event on ehealth. 8
9 WHO-ITU collaboration (cont.) Collaborative agreement with ITU. WHO and ITU have signed a collaboration agreement in support of the ITU s Broadband Wireless project in Africa, in which the ITU network infrastructure that will be utilized to improve health data collection and reporting at rural health facilities, and to enhance access to health knowledge and training for health workers. Joint ITU-WHO Workshop on ehealth Standards and Interoperability, April, Geneva. Joint ITU-WHO workplan on mhealth for Non-Communicable Diseases.The initiative will seek to develop sustainable and scalable mobile NCD projects in 8 countries in different regions. Expected launch of the initiative is during next World Telecom 2012 in Dubai. 9
10 National ehealth Strategy Toolkit The National ehealth Strategy Toolkit is a resource for developing or revitalizing a country s ehealth strategy. The Toolkit provides a framework and method for the development of a national ehealth vision, action plan and monitoring framework. Available at:

Assist countries to finalize their national roadmaps in support of recommendation
