1 Notes Directions The single letter on the left side of each slide is the letter of the alphabet. (Write this in the 1 st column of your notes.) L alphabet français The French Alphabet On the slide, in parenthesis, is a simple pronunciation designed to help you say the letter correctly. (This is already written for you in the 2 nd column of your notes.) The 3 rd column of your notes describes how each letter is pronounced in more detail. There is also an example of a French word using each letter. (Write this in the 4 th column of your notes.) You should definitely write your own pronunciation if you will not remember and your notes won t help you... (Except in the ch combination, which sounds like an sh to us, and ph which sounds like f!) Hélène, Henri, Thomas, Nathalie... Who s French name has the letter h in it? Française-! s final (at the end of words) Almost always silent (there are exceptions, you just learn those as you go...) Paris, Nicolas, Jacques, Français, Thomas... Who s French name ends with the letter s? Final Consonants! (Consonants at the end of words) Usually silent (there are exceptions) Richard, bien, deux, salut... Who s French name ends with a consonant (except C,R,F, or L?) Exceptions: The following are common exceptions where the last consonant can be heard. We will learn these later: août (August), cinq (five), sept (seven), huit (eight)... Final Consonants-(at the end of words) The exceptions! Exceptions: Pronounce the following final consonants: C,R,F and L. Française- -er, -ez, -et Sounds like ay Didier, Olivier, Roger... Careful of these letters! répétez, regardez... Eric, Victor, Leboeuf, Daniel... beret, beignet... Who s French name ends with C,R,F or L? Who s name ends with the letters er? Exceptions: Also, sometimes the ending of a word in French is pronounced if it is followed by a word that begins with a vowel. (avez-vous? vs. vous avez?) But when in doubt, don t pronounce the ending of French words. The sound ay also comes from the following accent: é... 6

Leur grand-mère est très riche. C est un docteur. Marc est professeur, et Hélène est biologiste. Après le dîner, Marc et Hélène vont au cinéma pour voir le nouveau film «Breaking Dawn». Look at the following words. What do they mean?! Can we understand this paragraph? Marc et Hélène sont au restaurant. Marc désire un hamburger et Hélène désire une salade et un steak pour le dîner. Although they are pronounced differently, cognates have the same meaning in both languages. Check the French side of the dictionary for at least 6 new cognates. Try to discover other cognates that are not given to you on your alphabet handout. Jot these down on your handout. 8
