3 VOCABULARY Self-Image/Self-Esteem the way you feel about yourself Self-Esteem = a measure of how much you like and respect yourself Resilience the ability to work through and recover from disappointment Small Paper/Pocket

4 WHAT IS SELF IMAGE? Self image & Self esteem are pretty much the same thing. Your view about your abilities, talents, and skills Confidence, pride, the way you feel about your body, emotions, and interactions with others

5 WHAT IS SELF IMAGE? People who like and respect themselves usually have a positive self-image People who do not like or respect themselves usually have a negative self-image.

6 Who influences self-image? External influences o Family o Siblings o Coaches o Teachers o Friends o Media o What others say to you Internal Influences o the way you self talk o internal messages o Skills and abilities Are these positive or negative influences?

7 Self-Image & Health Positive self-image has a great impact on your overall health o Practice good health habits o Have self-respect o More likely to avoid harmful behaviors Examples? Negative self-image has a great impact on your overall health o Example?

8 Think about it... The way we view ourselves is formed through What others think of us Successes/failures Our interactions with others Quick Thought: Can anyone name a past experiences that affected the way you felt about yourself? (i.e. put down, compliment) High & Low Self-Esteem worksheet

9 How Do You See Yourself? Write down 4 adjectives that describe you. ADJ List Paper Activity

10 Resilience When things go wrong, you need to be resilient Being resilient is important. It helps you cope with failure in a positive way. If you try out for the school play and don t get the lead role, you may be disappointed. However, if you are resilient, you will not let this get you down and you will try out for a smaller part or become part of the stage crew. Resiliency is your ability to bounce back from difficulties.

11 Think about it... Why is resiliency important? How could self-image, self-esteem, and resiliency come into play with bullying?

16 SELF IMAGE IN MANY FORMS We have a generalized self-image, but we may have many self-images. We can be a good student, a terrible baseball player, good swimmer, average reader, all at the same time We should never generalize from one or two bad experiences.

17 SELF IMAGE IMPROVEMENT Can you change or improve your self-image?

18 SELF IMAGE IMPROVEMENT YES! Self image is constantly changing It is possible to develop a more positive self-image

19 Developing a positive selfimage Developing a positive self-image is an important part of emotional health It can help to identify some of your strengths and weaknesses Write down in your packet 2 things you do well and 2 things you don t do so well.

20 Developing a positive selfimage Have confidence in yourself and your abilities Positive self-talk Accept encouragement (use it to recognize your strengths) Set a goal and work to reach it (this will give you a sense of accomplishment) Develop real expectations (no one is perfect) Find friends that support and encourage you Avoid worrying about hurtful remarks or looks (put them behind you and move on)

21 Developing a positive selfimage Pay attention to your appearance Treat others how you would like to be treated Positively express your emotions Accept yourself for who you are Take responsibility for actions Admit your mistakes, learn from them! Try new things Surround yourself with positive people
